I'm gonna say this now whilst it hasn't premiered. I am sort've not 100% with this one (Mainly due to time constraints preventing me from analysing the subject as much as I would’ve liked), and wish to apologise in advance if it felt rushed in certain areas. Hopefully January's documentary won't have the same problems.
Here’s what I think about the PvZ franchise right now: PvZ right now is in state where it can’t die but also can’t grow. After the cancellation of neighborville many people of the community were fearing on what will happen with the future of PvZ and the only thing we could do was just wait for any news. After several months of nothingness many youtubers started giving up on waiting and focused on other franchises like Zero, TheAlanYessus, MrCrazyCactus and Wolfy Playz. This caused some views to go down as some people only wanted PvZ from them but what content is there to make of it when the whole franchise is completely blank right now? This may have made an impact on the community because PvZ youtubers play a huge part in it and with their views dropping down so does the franchise. But after a several months of waiting we finally got a new and improved beta of PvZ 3 which many people enjoyed. This is our spark of hope for this franchise right now because if the people like it then youtubers will make videos on it and with them making videos on it views go up and with views going up so does the franchise. Another thing is that although PvZ may be irrelevant it is definitely not dead as you can see. many servers full of max players in every PvZ shooter (including neighborville) this shows that even though the franchise has declined in popularity the fans haven’t left because we still have hope. Right now the best thing to do is to just wait for the full release on PvZ 3 because as it seems many people have enjoyed the beta so if this game does end up becoming a success then maybe we PopCap could start focusing on more PvZ games to make. I know it’s frustrating to wait for something to happen but I’m very positive that it’ll all be worth it once PvZ 3 releases. I wish best of luck to all PvZ youtubers right now and to PopCap. Now anyways I’m gonna go play some GW2.
@@LtDub had an almost full match of below lvl 100s in a mixed mode match, easy kills but was also a breath of fresh air from either sweats, exploiters (people who glitch under the map or above) and It made me feel good that people are coming to see this amazing game for the first time
Although this hasn't started yet, I think ZeroxFusionz was the youtuber hardest hit by the pvz content, compare his older pvz uploads from 2016, 17 and 18 to now, he has had a severe drop off in views.
The premiere may be in one day but I will share my thoughts on the subject. PvZ is an old franchise. Not just old, it is irrelevant. PopCap also knows this, but are still pushing everything so they try to push the death of it as much as possible. So don't get mad at them if the game tries to invite new people. Unfortuntely, because it is irrelevant, no one watches it anymore, and this is why the PvZ youtubers become less and less. There are some PvZ memes that randomly explode, but that's all. The franchise is dying, and seems like it will stay like this.
i don't wanna believe this but its probably true, i hope EA gives pvz to another company who will be able to restore it to it's former glory, cause its clear that EA and Popcap can't do it since bfn and pvz 3 being a bit disappointing
As a small pvz channel I can say that pvz is hard not the game itself but for content because whatever you are doing somebody else with a big channel has probably done it already and since all the good characters are on sale like toxic brains and torchwood its a little hard to get very enjoyment but there's always some enjoyment in pvz and I will probably stick to pvz but I rarely get views so if pvz doesn't work I'll probably do fnaf but my point is new pvz TH-camrs are struggling and pvz is still a awesome game
It's kind of like a "Simpson's did it" situation where everything has pretty much been done already, the new challenge is trying to improvise to help it stand out from the others
A one answer for the questioned question: because they HAVE to change, no matter how good the game is, even if they didn’t bore out of it, they still have to change their content
This will be an interesting video to say the least. Since most of the bigger PVZ TH-camrs don’t upload PVZ very much. If anything you probably see more PVZ content made from smaller PVZ TH-camrs nowadays. This is probably due to the fact that because most of the bigger PVZ TH-camrs have done PVZ content for so long that the content well begins to look a little dry and another reason would be those TH-camrs also wanting to try something different on their channels which is why we only see a PVZ vid every once in a while from them.
Making pvz content is pretty much a pointless endeavor nowadays, seeing as the game is far past its prime. There simply aren't many people who want to watch pvz content anymore, so it isn't very appealing to make content on it if you are focused on growing your channel.
2:28 you just unlocked a box of old child hood memories. Thank you. I had long forgotten about this channel and its videos but i never knew its name any way . Never would have rediscovered it.
I have been watching wolfy for years now and like you said about his audience I don't plan to stop, every time I see a notification from him I watch it all the way through.
As an old PVZ fan, from my perspective, I can say, that PVZ has repeated the fate of TF2. With both franchises have been left with no clear future ahead, but still refuses to die.
great video, i agree with most of what you said. i think the series’ youtube community just died because people lost interest in the games after popcap dropped support for, and the game’s community has hit a low point (especially in the console communities). i’ve been wondering the same thing for about a year now though, thanks for voicing my thoughts in the video.
This is so sad. I’ve never known a company to destroy nostalgia, destroy TH-cam channels or lazily make a sequel to a internet phenomenon like EA. Nowadays it feels like they can’t be bothered to put some effort in. Most companies nowadays do similar things for example Disney.
I feel like this vid would be better if it wasn't about the decline of the popularity of PvZ youtubers, but rather the decline of PvZ in itself. I recently watched Wolfy Playz's vid on the same topic, but just about everything can be traced back to the lack of interest in developers and players, and the fact that both parties' issues feed into one another. If one is to convey the possible demise of the PvZ franchise (which in effect harms the youtubers as well), especially to newcomers to the concept and the games, one must backtrack through where everything went wrong AND focus on both the publicity and the larger forces at play at the same time. If I'm wrong I'll shut my mouth, but just think about it. I too am a longtime fan of the PvZ franchise, and it's hard for me to see it go so downhill nowadays. -Yours, a kitsune neighbor.
it is sad to see the pvz shooter content die off over the past few years, if only bfn actually did well this would be a completely different story i would bet
The only thing about the mods is that there simply is only coders and programmers. No modelers to make cool stuff. They are simply reusing stuff already in the game or are very simple models or sprites.
You just unlocked a memory vault about Apple’s old Angry Bird plush videos, I remember laughing a lot about those, I always wondered what happened to the channel lol
If you want to know I remember wolfy having around 5k subs by the time I started watching him which would have been around the time gw2 was released in 2016 since I always wanted to play the og one so I started watching gw2 content
I want to say this was an inevitable drop, because nothing can stay at its peak forever, but this is entirely on EA. The mess they created when they dragged so many developers from individual studios like Popcap to others, (only to shutdown said studios for no reason) crippled numerous projects. And it's a big circle. Both BFN and Battlefield 2048 died because of EA's mistakes. And us fans are left to suffer for it.
Even though I still play bfn and that it started my yt channel. It's haven't been the same since I first played it. And that I started to upload less bfn videos in the past two years (that was 2021 to 2022) as it is now a game sometime full of sweats and toxic players.
At least we have pvz 2 literally receiving new mechanics and a plant every single month But it’s barely anything anymore the downfall… The pvz 3 rework isn’t even enough, let’s hope when it’s officially released it will offer us much much new content I remeber my glory days of my channel when I primarily made pvz 2 vids, but it got boring and I stuck to roblox but that was my downfall…. I hope I can make grinding vids on pvz gw2 once I can record the vid on the Xbox that is Wont be to long until I completly leave the pvz community
PvZ right now shares some similarities with TF2, an IP that hasn't had a great amount of quality content from the devs for a long time which means the devs no longer support the game(s) at all (or barelly do so) with it's community trying to keep the game(s) afloat and alive in the dev's absence. TF2 seems to be in a better shape considering the community content is beeing put in the game in the seasonal events while PvZ only has word of mouth and PC mods and even then some people use theese mods in online matches which affects negatively the game's performance on PC. Maybe if the PvZ games were put in Steam and Epic Games the PvZ shooters might get a boost in popularity in the PC side of things? Not really sure.
I'm curious, could this have been avoided? I'm almost wondering if the PvZ Franchise has pretty much done everything it can. Maybe PvZ just naturally reached the end of it's lifespan.
PvZ is almost 10 years old and hasn't gotten a proper sequel. Imagine it if Mario only had 1 platforming game, made an MTX platforming game, and then Mario Kart but to get a lot of the features you pay money and effectively pay money each reach. This would kill everything quickly. PvZ has mastered alienating its audience by not delivering in a reasonable or fair way.
It's still fun I've been play gw2 for 5-6 years now! It's still great it's the lack of players and toxic players that ruin it like in gnome bomb (this is ongoing too) a player targets me just because he taunted me 8 times no joke and I taunt him once and he spam kills me to thing day and he pms me "EZ" it's annoying btw can you make a vid on how to counter twilight chomper and super brainz because those are the most annoying players
Even though many left, I decided to keep going with pvz content, along with random content from other games I have. I won't stop doing pvz. Anyone still play pvzgw1 in 2021 and beyond?
The only pvz content that is very popular right now is kids watching clickbait pvzs that aren't teven funny adn entertaining. The animations suck, or just random bullshit hacks, and it is dissapointing. like seriously? Ne\EARLY 1M VIEWS VIEWING HACKED PVZ2?!
With the exitance of pvz3 many more youtubers have stopped dj wolfy and zack are the only ones carrying the game but zack doesn't like the game and his content is dying
Very nice video, and done in the most respectful, yet honest way you can. My current TH-cam account was made the same year GW2 was released. When I first learned about the game, I decided to look it up on TH-cam to see what I would find, and I immediately found ZeroXFusionz. His content was so fun and interesting that I made a TH-cam account specifically to subscribe to him. Later on, I would find WolfyPlayz due to the collabs him and Zero had for boss events, and I found him to be fantastic for completely different reasons. While Zero had some more strategy and challenge videos, Wolfy had hysterical reactions and edits that immediately had me hooked. Wolfy for a long time was my favorite TH-camr, and I truly believe his videos, new and old, have held up very well. I still watch him on the daily I did not watch Apple and Bob as frequently, but I still respected their content styles, and the hide and seek collabs on Wolfy’s channel are some of my favorite YT videos of all time. Those GW2 YTubers molded the way I saw not just GW2, but TH-cam as a whole. So many funny and great moments, and Wolfy’s final PvZ video really shows that we truly can’t comprehend how much we should appreciate something until that thing is lost. And that leads me to a tangent… BFN is in my bottom 3 games I ever played. Even though the game has features that I wanted in other PvZ shooter games (a wizard zombie was my most wanted character EVER), it doesn’t stop me from finding massive flaws with the game as a whole. I hate playing the game, I hate the art style of the game, I hate what was changed at a fundamental level, but worst of all, I hate what it represents. PvZ BFN represents change for the sake of change, as it is an unfinished game with clearly greedy incentives with its pass system, cosmetics, and Rux as a whole. The first two games also had elements of unfinished components and disappointing features (torchwood and hovergoat skins is the big example imo), but it still felt like they stuck to their roots and held on in the face of adversity. PvZ BFN also represents how willing EA is to throw away franchises. The PvZ shooters have a diehard fanbase that stuck around despite hiccups and mistakes by the PvZ shooter team, yet EA pulled the plug like this game was nothing. And worst of all, PvZ BFN represents PvZ’s downfall. After this game, we haven’t gotten anything related to the shooters, PvZ 2’s new “content” has been new characters in a game completely oversaturated with characters, and PvZ 3 just sucks. Every version of it I don’t like in the slightest. And because of this downfall, also meant the end of one of my favorite eras of content for PvZ, and one of my favorite eras of content as a whole. I can definitely understand why someone would have a different opinion about the game (especially if they lack my massive negative bias 😅), but I hope this tangent showcases why I feel so strongly negative about the game, and why it’s existence left a sour reputation for PvZ as a whole for me. My interest in PvZ content really dropped after the game was released, the only reason at the time I still watched Wolfy was because I found his Pokémon videos incredibly funny and I got back into the Pokémon series. It’s honestly a shame what one bad game can do to the reputation of a franchise, and I’m absolutely positive I’m not the only one who feels this way. Back to more relevant discussion, I do wish ZeroXFusionz had some more emphasis in this video, because he was the big kahuna of GW2 content imo, and the one who hurt the most with PvZ’s loss of relevancy. I actually decided to watch his streams somewhat recently, and they were actually quite fun. Though I should mention I only was interested at first because I saw Zero was playing another one of my favorite games of all time (terraria). It’s honestly tragic what happened to Zero’s channel. Man did so much for the PvZ community and EA themselves knew that. While I still watch Wolfy’s videos (he actually got me interested into new games like Pizza Tower), I unfortunately can’t say the same about Zero. Not necessarily because his content is worse now, but because my interest in content changed, and the videos he makes now just aren’t hitting the same for me. This comment is long as fuck, and I doubt anyone will read this, but I just needed to get off my chest how much PvZ TH-cam shaped me in terms of TH-cam videos and video games I enjoy. As corny as it sounds, PvZ GW2 means a lot to me. Few games can replicate the magic of playing this shooter. Hell, I don’t even play a lot of shooters, but I still find this game phenomenal, and the memories it provided playing it and watching TH-cam will never be forgotten.
You’ve forgot about zackscottgames He’s the #1 Most popular of the content creators with his first gw2 video getting 21 Million views More than the freaking trailer

I feel really sad for the pvz community right now. I feel that every week i hear some bad news about the pvz shooters
What's garden warfare 2 and who are these people, I thought Plants vs zombies 1 was new. it came out 2 years ago, either way. Amazing Video!
I wonder if PopCap will continue any pvz shooters anytime soon…
We can only hope
Most likely not
If those topic will be the same for next month of the ones that lost I’m super excited
Nice video I really enjoyed it
Wolfy is staying in but now he's getting into the tower defense games.
Ngl best documentary you have ever made 👌
People need to realize there’s more than just PVZ in the world.
Even though many left, I decided to keep going with pvz content, along with random content from other games I have. I won't stop doing pvz. Anyone still play pvzgw1 in 2021 and beyond?
Yes. In fact PvZ GW 1 & 2 is likely my most played game of my entire life if I'm being honest. It is that fun.
Yes
The only pvz content that is very popular right now is kids watching clickbait pvzs that aren't teven funny adn entertaining.
The animations suck, or just random bullshit hacks, and it is dissapointing.
like seriously?
Ne\EARLY 1M VIEWS VIEWING HACKED PVZ2?!
We are losing some but we are gaining new content creators
What about Redhead gaming?
Would Zackscott be considered a founding father?
No
With the exitance of pvz3 many more youtubers have stopped dj wolfy and zack are the only ones carrying the game but zack doesn't like the game and his content is dying
Only the reworked pvz3 its our only hope to save the franchise
Wolfy stopped too….
This was made back when he was still uploading PVZ
@@LtDarkRing yeah i know. I meant with that that it is continuing
Does zackscot or toothles not count?
Toothless is gone
there is no content being made for the content creators to create content :(
women: he didn't cry during titanic. do men even have feelings?
men:
Cringe pvz youtube kids clickbait farm channels have also killed the franchise.
I still watch him on the daily
I did not watch Apple and Bob as frequently, but I still respected their content styles, and the hide and seek collabs on Wolfy’s channel are some of my favorite YT videos of all time. Those GW2 YTubers molded the way I saw not just GW2, but TH-cam as a whole. So many funny and great moments, and Wolfy’s final PvZ video really shows that we truly can’t comprehend how much we should appreciate something until that thing is lost. And that leads me to a tangent…
BFN is in my bottom 3 games I ever played.
I don't think zero is making gw content any more
You’ve forgot about zackscottgames He’s the #1 Most popular of the content creators with his first gw2 video getting 21 Million views More than the freaking trailer
Bro stop premiering vids my anxiety is explosive
This is propably a great Video but I cannot listen to that voice for more than a minute
Facts
TH-cam and Twitch aren't social media, they're content platforms
That yeti chomper footage was cringe because you used chomp cannon, even that reg goop is better.
PvZ is literally it’s name, the game is a literal zombie
7:10 oh
