    Hey everyone. It took me a while, but I have just realised the stupid mistake of putting "(R) Fey Ancestry" in the features and traits column. It is an elven trait, not a dwarven trait. Besides that, the instructions in the video is still relevant for players who want to build their new character.

Your videos are FANTASTIC, super clear, and have taught me things I couldn't find easily anywhere else - like what saving throws mean and such! Quick note, you only get the +2 AC from the shield if you are wielding it. I usually add it on to AC only if I'm using the shield. Seems better to forget to add it on and feel like an idiot than forget to take it off and be accused of cheating.

    I'm confused on one thing. So if you accept the variant type of roll. (The point system) the highest you can go is 15 and the lowest is 8. My question is, if I decide to roll 4D6 and get 18 for max or 3 for minimum do I lower or raise these to 15 and 8? Or am I stuck with 3 and master everything with the 18?

    I've made a blackguard/warlock mixture class called a Darktreader, it gets specific class bonuses at certain levels while getting basic warlock feats at each level, he has an old one,a fiend, and I customized the shadow adept into a warlock patron path, which gives me the ability to make shadow/necrotic versions of sorcerer spells instead of gaining those specific spells, but this character wants to become a big bad like sauron, and I plan on making him a boss in one of my campaigns, any advice from people who've done similar?

    If you pick your class skill proficiencies first and they overlap with your background skill proficiencies you are allowed to choose another skill as long as it uses the same attribute modifier.

  • @ramgladore
    @ramgladore 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm just getting started in D&D. My character is a human fighter who grew up poor on a farm. To reflect this, I opted not to take the chain mail or leather armor or even a metal weapon allotted to me. I settled on a human fighter because I want him to be as plain and mundane as possible. He's not super special. No draconic bloodline, member of some noble house or chosen by the gods. I don't want him to know he is a main character. I'm starting out with common cloths, a wooden club and a wooden shield made from the lid of a barrel. I have a backpack with only 20 rations and a rope. And I decided not to put my highest ability score in Str but in Cha. (I want to be able to connect with NPCs and come across as friendly) I purposefully made my fighter imperfect because I think it would make for better story telling.

    • @agonleed3841
      @agonleed3841 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      how did that work out...honestly?
      curious.
      myself am just starting as well, but I feel like while it's cool to make him.not know he's special, it seems...dumb or stupid for him to not understand he's going on a journey and need more than a barrel top. and as a farmer he'd definitely be strong. connection can happen with the people he trades with a lot but he'd have more strength than as most days on the farm, before the journey, he'd he'd working a lot and socializing less.
      a dae.er would know to use the right tools for the job, so he wouldn't go out to face things with just cloth clothing.
      as I've heard, a good dm can make aby setting or choices work. and I'm not directly insulting your character. but being a farmer myself, it just seems off lol.
      I grew up on the land and by the time I hit highschool, ready to go out into the world, I'm only 37 and graduated in 2003, I knew you don't go out without certain gear.
      uf you've played cops and robbers or gladiators or whatever with just clothing on ecen as kids, you learn quickly that you need armor for real lol.
      farmers aren't dumb lol

    • @ramgladore
      @ramgladore 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@agonleed3841 Well he did grow and obtain better equipment and he's got a habit of trying to talk to his enemies before he resorts to violence. We actually ended up knocking out a cult leader who was actually being magically brainwashed by a high level demon. It turns out he was just a normal guy who was at the wrong place at the worst time.

    Can you add more spells than the list on the sheet

    • @DontStopThinking
      @DontStopThinking  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. You can use the same spell twice as long as you have enough spell slots to spend.
      You can have more spells than the blank space in the spell sheet. The sheet is just a guide. Some experienced players don't even need to use a sheet. They've already remembered all the necessary info and just use a regular note book for their character info.

    I need the proficency of a human folk hero fighter

    • @Cloud_Seeker
      @Cloud_Seeker 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You get the Saving Throws from the Fighter class. Fighters are proficient in Strength and Constitution Saves.
      A folk Hero is proficient in the skills Animal Handling and Survival. They are also proficient in land Vehicles such as carts and carriages. They also know how to use a single set of Artisan's tools.
      Fighters get to pick two skills from Acrobatics, Animal Handling, Athletics, History, Insight, Intimidation, Perception, and Survival.
      So your Fighter have the skills from your background + the class skills.

      DMs usually have the right to veto some options and introduce house rules because they are running the game. The rules are more clearly outlined if you are playing in official games like Adventurers League.

      Don't Stop Thinking That is true and very worth mentioning. I'm just only adding it in since I know the game I play are letting some people use those races. Although it's very good to check with the DM first.

    That is a very interesting point buy system the one I prefer starts at 9 gives you 21 points and the max you can put any stat to is 18

    I've been playing DnD for a long time, so I didn't really need this video, but it was very well made and you went through all the steps perfectly and clearly. I might show your videos to some newer players to aid in the explanation. Thanks for making these, and good job.

    In many videos, you talk about time. (i.e. "after 8 hours...") How is time measured in D&D? Is it real time, or is there a way to measure it in-game? If so, how? If this was already said in one of the episodes, I apologize.

    • @DontStopThinking
      @DontStopThinking  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In-game time. It is really up to the DM how time passes. 10 years could pass with just a sentence.

    Do you have a multicolor PDF version of the character sheet available for print? I would LOVE to have one!
