Footwork Drill for Increased Agility & Cutting Off the Ring

  • Here's a #boxing #footwork drill that I have all of my fighters and clients do. Not only does it help with agility and cutting off the ring, but it's also just a great workout. Grab some cones and do this for a full 3-minute round at your fastest pace possible, and you'll be sweating by the end!

The push and pull with your legs, while minding the “ceiling”, is the most important part imo. In dance, it’s called isolation movements-which basically (in this instance) means keeping your center of gravity in a neutral position to make quick adjustments.
When you’re “hopping” up and down like you mentioned, lateral movement is really hampered. You can’t make any lateral movement until you’ve touched back down. It’s also much harder to “kick” the ground for that same reason.

There is a channel, Marvin Cook, that is basically an encyclopedia on everything footwork. Hasn't uploaded a video in 7 years but there is a lot there. I see people in his comments calling out issues with certain things he advocates, but for the most part I'd say it's a great collection of videos for people interest in footwork.

If you don’t have anyone to train with you can record yourself on your phone saying North South East And West, in a random order, or have someone else do it if you’re worried you’re going to memorize it lol. Did something similar with a different drill.
