    You may be thinking of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia (Shenandoah Valley) and yes the mountains are strikingly blue in the early mornings and evenings!

    Really great demonstration of improving a painting! I actually live in the mountains of NC, and we have a sub-range of the Blue Ridge Mountains called the Great Smoky Mountains. I mention this because I was thinking when you made sure to put the cloud behind the mountain, I know you didn’t want to lose the perspective. But it also would have looked very much like the mountains here to actually have the “clouds” (fog, mist, whatever you want to call it) mingling with the mountains, and in some cases losing the edge. In other words, this is my verbose way of making a request to possibly consider creating a nice wide landscape with the clouds mingling with the mountainous range that would bear a remarkable likeness to the Great Smoky Mountains. I’ll understand if you prefer not to, as I understand you’ve earned the right to paint what you want to, not what others want. But it sure seems right up your alley. Anyway, always enjoy your videos, and happy with whatever you choose to share. Thanks!

      My Mother in law grew up in your area. Specifically Soddy-Daisy area. Her maiden name was Smith. We could be related.

      I know a Randy Smith from Northern AZ /Southern Utah. Is this you? And oddly I'm thinking about moving to NC. Although your area is sure in the news a lot, and for creepy weird stuff 🫣It's enough to keep me here in the West still.😒 Take Care

      @@asherrogers2687 No, never been to Utah or Arizona. I’ve lived here my whole life, and I can say it’s changed in ways I could scarcely have imagined. But the beauty of the mountains and forests still exist; older than the Rockies, if not as majestic. My wife has been to Utah and Arizona; she and others have often told me how how amazing they both are. Need to visit sometime. Take care!

    Whoever said your paintings are gloomy is obviously not very well schooled in the arts. Your paintings are beautiful. Absolutely stunning. So keep doing what you're doing man. I'm learning a lot from you. Thank you

    Sorry if this is a little long, but I want to say, Stuart, your approach has completely transformed my approach to painting and all for the better. I've been in all sorts of art my entire life, and painting was a big part of it as a kid. I've been a full-time graphic artist/designer for 23 years and have battled perfectionism, inevitably leading to stiff and unsatisfying work when I'd try to paint. But more importantly, I no longer found the painting process enjoyable. I was in "rendering" mode, and my analytical brain was getting in the way. So, I went out on a limb and had a blank canvas in front of me a few weeks ago, mixed up a wash of red ochre, sap green, and Payne's gray. I just went for it. Splat, smear, scrub, tickle. And before my eyes, I saw it. I saw the ground take shape, and these wispy lines turned into hillsides. I wiped away a tiny portion in a rough mass, and then my brain did some positive/negative space flip, and then I saw it was light through the trees. This method has made painting like allowing your eyes to wander over a natural landscape and let your mind get curious about what's going on. You can do anything and fix or get rid of it, and it's no big deal. I am still learning and have much room to grow, but now that the process is FUN, growth is FAR EASIER. I'm working on something that was going well, and then I put a wash of color I'm not happy with. Now I see the approach to fixing carries a lot of the same spirit of curiosity and experimentation. I just blotted out some of that wash in a random way, and now I see mountains that I never did before and it actually has improved the composition.

    Blue Ridge Mountains are part of the appalachian mountains. There's a road called the blue ridge parkway that runs from Cherokee, NC up to Shenandoah Mountains in Virginia. Wonderful views.

    Isoprene is emitted by trees as a way to protect themselves from the stress of excess heat, especially on summer days. After it's released into the air, isoprene interacts with other molecules in the atmosphere, creating the distinctive haze that's made the Blue Ridge Mountains famous.
    🤓
    So glad you didn’t change the sky a whole lot. LOVE this one! Gorgeous! Thanks for the water. I personally don’t find it predictable, just familiar in a comforting way.

    Love how your attitude to life mirrors your approach to painting. See how it goes, let it flow. Unfortunately, my life echoes the water element, flows downhill. Wouldn't it be great if I could smooth it out with a swipe of paper, give an impression of interest with the corner of a brush and remove elements with the palete knife. Never mind I can create my own little world on canvas. Thank you Stuart.🤞

    In the United States, I buy Viva paper towels. They are softer and more linen like. Nice for smudging and blending. Watch to be sure you get the right kind. They started a common cheaper version during the pandemic years. Get the softer kind.

    Hi Stuart, regarding the difficulty of not being able to open tubes that have the cap seemingly stuck and no matter how hard we try the cap will not budge.
    When this happens to me, I get the pliers out and this is the best way to open tubes that have caps that cannot be opened easily. I grip the cap with the pliers and with my other hand I take hold of the tube and itself in the palm of my hand and apply pressure sufficient to ensure that the tube does not tear and leak paint everywhere. I realise this is a bit like sucking eggs, but this is purely meant to show how one can improvise, rather than making ones fingers sore in the attempt to loosen the cap.
    Loved this painting and your "fixing of it".👍🇬🇧

    • @amandagermany5933
      @amandagermany5933 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a tube that won't budge even with pliers. The integrity of the tube itself is not sufficient to allow for leverage. I will do what Stuart said probably and just open the bottom and roll it up when done.

    • @di4237
      @di4237 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you dip the top of the tube in boiling hot water for a little while then use the pliers it works.

    • @amandagermany5933
      @amandagermany5933 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@di4237 I will try that. Thanks.

    • @Paul-su3qh
      @Paul-su3qh ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@di4237 way to go girl cause there is always a way and no right or wrong though. It's just a matter of what works best. For me it is all about getting the right pressure on the cap with out twisting the tube to the point of rupturing it. Using hot water to loosen the cap a bit, sounds even better though so thanks for figuring that one Di.

    Quick answer: the Blue Ridge Mountains are perceived as shades of blue due to a common chemical released by the native trees that scatters blue light from the sun.

With the tutorials it's very easy to see how the details are added, how the clouds change and that, but when I start doing it myself, it's not easy at all, and that's understandable.
