Saito looks less intense as well. In the manga at least, his face completely changes after he takes the hit to the back of the neck. They both decide at the same time that they are done doing whatever this game is and are just going to kill each other. It was super intense and first time I was genuinely worried about a main character losing.
The new version captures the movements a bit better but the atmosphere in the original was so good, the dark dojo room, the eye color switch to show he’s slipping back to battosai it’s just so good
Great animation, but...where's the story? The build up? I get them shortening some of the other fights as if to say "Kenshin made short work of them", but this is considered by many to be one of the top 5 anime fights in history, and they just gave us the cliff notes version. Why was the fight with Jinei done better than the fight with Saito that had so much more relevance to the story?
Yup, a while back I had been waiting for at least a few dozen episodes before I started watching the remake. This dropped and I decided to spoil it for myself and start watching. When I saw how absolutely horrifically they ruined this fight I decided watching the show would be a waste of time sinc there are so many other, better things for me to watch
The animation of this chapter in 1996 is a thousand times superior. The music that accompanies each movement of the characters, the dark colors, the way Kenshin gradually gives way to the Hitokiri, Kaoru's emotions when she sees that she can't do anything to stop the fight. The original Japanese voices that are second to none, the choreography of the entire fight, especially when Kenshin swings his sword into the back of Saito's head. UNSURPASSED THE ANIMATION OF 1996.
The old version is wirse to this one The 90s animation looks worse its grainy and every action scene has the screen flashing so much it should come with a epilepsy warning
Alright, I absolutely love the animation of this remake, I won't nitpick the small stuff... but the Yellow snake eyes were kind of an important device to show Kenshins ferocity and him slowly slipping back into his manslayer ways. The original used that very well and showed the weight of this conflict on Kenshin. 8/10 imo
aw I see a lot of people dogging on this version, I thought they did a fantastic job, especially with the sound production the old show is iconic, and this was one of the best fights in the series so I get it but I am glad to be getting a cleaner sharper version When I saw this as a kid, this fight marked an important turn for the show that made it my favorite anime. Just like we saw with Jin-E, Kaoru realizes that the good natured man she is falling in love with still struggles with becoming a cold-blooded killer once again as his past catches up to him. It added a dimension to a hero that really touched me. Even though he fought for something he believes in, he spends the rest of his life tortured by how many lives he took to make it happen.
The way Saito grips his sword and how Kenshin and Saito came out from the dojo...is the remake truly more royal to the manga? I thought some parts were rather based on the 2012 live adaptation film. I won't say which is better or worse, but it did make me wonder a bit.
Tbh, I really love this adaptation. The only thing I loved more in the 90's anime was the music but the music here is also pretty good. the yellow eyes weren't in this adaptation but the voice actors and the animation were way ahead. I really love the effect and sound design for the remake.
After watching FMA and seeing how Brotherhood did the manga justice, I always believed Kenshin needed that treatment. I'll just leave the only comment that appreciates the newer version over the old. If you take off the rose-tinted shades, the only thing that made the original different was its dramatization. I, for one, never understood the choreography of Kenshin rebounding off the wall into a corkscrew-motion only to end up suddenly running to clash blades with Saito. Like, literally when does he go from spiraling in the air to running? Everyone clamors over the eye-color changing like it's supposed to be a Super Saiyan moment for Kenshin when the manga had nothing more to go off of other than drawing the eyes sharper. Everyone complaining about why the original is better seems to forget how much it strayed from the source material, and the decisions made that ultimately doomed it.
Not really the 1996 version though swayed off abit from the manga...it's one of those decisions which show both the manga and anime strongly stand alone and well receiveed which isn't a bad thing
I had watched all my old anime’s and just two stand proudly hittokiri Battousai and Yu Yu hakusho Is just a breath of fresh air redoing this masterpiece
The fight itself is dope. And the fact that it continues outside of the dojo is a nice change. Yes, the original is better. But in this particular case, the difference is smaller.
My thoughts exactly. I sort of knew it would be that way from the music of the series. Not a single track has caught my ear, an didnt pull me into the scenes. It feels hollow and low. The animation is a different style an not better if u ask me. I am glad they animated it better with out the still frames an lights, we get the actual animation of them doing the moves like Aoshi's Kaiten Kenbu. It's still.....lacking in many areas. The comedy, music, an soul of the series. Bitter sweet for me
This is so disappointing and beneath the original anime fight. Kenshin was part of the Golden age of anime for a reason. Those of us who lived through that era of anime truly are lucky.
This is such a let down - the original was one of the best and most dramatic anime fights ever. This is so bad, it's almost instantaneously forgettable
I agree that this has superior graphics than the old one but 90s better because of OST, build up and the pacing making you feel tense. Eye color change too!!
I remember this episode in the 90s. I don't know why they thought they could do better. it's brave to remake this episode, but stupid. the 90s version of this episode was just on a different level. should not have attempted to redo that one. I love that the OVA which was during his hitokiri days had the same animation style as this particular episode. really puts the audience into perspective of how different he was and how different the times were during the bakufu. and it really drives the point of how they revert to their former selves on these kinds of fight.
Animation is one thing, the animation is good in the remake. Art direction (colors, shadows, darkness) and the music making a darker atmosphere is another, and on that department 90s is awesome.
Don’t get me wrong is nice a classic anime gets a remaster, however these fights are far to short, and Ken shin when he goes to battosai mode doesn’t send a shiver down my spine like the color change when he use to. Like we need that alternate style to show between kind kenshin who wants to redeem himself for the lives he took vs when he was in full war mode to survive a very violent war
Unpopular Opinion: I really like this fight and i found it really enjoyable. Sure, the OG was better, but that doesn't mean this fight has his own merits. Tbh i had 0 hopes in this remake when it was announced, but i must say i was really satisfied with the final result.
It sure looks nice but this does not evocate even half the tension of the original anime. The colors transitioning from redish tones to purple as the dusk gives way to the night. And those Hollywood impact sound effects... wtf?
Thank you for the "Hollywood impact sound effects", I didn't know what to call them! 😂. Trying too hard to make it dramatic, the 90s version didn't need that and the blows felt super impactful, here's rather unnatural. I'm a HEMA practitioner and the 90s version really drove the point home of what it feels like dodging, blocking and hitting, without needing to use exaggerated effects to force impact on the viewers. They have to feel it naturally, can't force it 🤷🏻♂️⚔️☀️...
Old animation told the story from so many ways, setting, time of day, the way the fights carried the weight of anyone could win. Comparing the two just gave away a predictable modern anime trope where main characters just fight to make it to the next cut scene, in this case someone yelling to get the attention away from the fight. That and for those of us who watched the original and the live action movies, we may have also been spoiled in terms of quality and pacing. If I was a kid watching this for the first time, hooked. No doubt about it.
the animation was great, but the atmosphere of the original, with the sun setting and the yellow eyes of kenshin when he goes full hitokiri are far better. still, great adaptation from the manga and great animation also.
Everyone talking about the old animation being better, thats sad, this animation was good regardless, its unfair to compare it to such masterpiece of an animation that was the original.
The original was not better at all i watched the original just vefore the new one came out and the og is worse this show follows the mNga more closely abd has way cleaner animation i can watch tge fight scenes without getting a headache from the constantly flashing screen furthermore the two little kids that where in the og for no other reason than Look were children where dropped to The og might have been good for its time but its very much 90s this version does a lot of things a lot better
This is still a good rendition of the fight; but it’s lost something everything feels a bit too fast and doesn’t build the same tension. The BGM in the original really sets the mood far better too. In the original anime this whole scene takes place inside the dojo, and if I remember that is the case with the manga too. Being indoors also gave the scene great lighting that enhanced the mood.
They took a fight that spanned two episodes that due to the pacing, suspense, and music, was potentially the best in the whole series and crammed the remake fight into a 6 minute brawl that felt completely rushed through. They did a good job ruining one of the biggest possible moments of the remake
I see there are people criticizing the fact that kenshin's eyes didn't change or about his hair, but thing is, I'm a fan of the OG work the manga, and this is authentic to it, I really like the way things are going with the new Rurouni Kenshin animation.
The animation and artwork are for sure better. However, the way the OG anime conveyed the emotions through the anime was miles ahead. If they got Kazuma's hand animators to do the fight scenes, it would have pulled ahead probably. And add Yasuharu's masterpiece BGMs.
The animation, how Kenshin hair release, the yellow eyes, the entire battle sequence, how kenshin uses the battojustau, Saito Gatotsu, and the ost, objectively talking, the fight form the first anime was so superior from this one. This battle was meh. My expectations are low now for the amakakeru. Is am only interested to see the Einishi arc from this version l.
The og fight was fire because the music
Also dark dojo room give intense atmosphere
And the eye color switch from kenshin into battosai
I know! I wish they brought that back! Yellow eyes Kenshin looks scary!

The fight seems faster and better but my issue with this fight is the music compared to the original. It’s just unmatched
1:05-1:12 was so fire 🔥
This is good no doubt about it but the original one this fight is superior
The remake can't top the OG scene, the blood, the killing intent and the eyes of the OG is still the best
Unpopular Opinion: I really like this fight and i found it really enjoyable. Sure, the OG was better, but that doesn't mean this fight has his own merits. Tbh i had 0 hopes in this remake when it was announced, but i must say i was really satisfied with the final result.
Old animation was more detailed even though it was 28 years ago.Kenshin's eyes were changing into yellow when he entered Battousai mode.
@@MiguelMedV For a moment I thought I was watching a Michael Bay movie or something.
I want Old Classics back to existing only right now today
Anyone saying the old anime has better animation is blinded ny nostalgia
Am I the only one who like the old animation better?
This version is harder to tell what's going on in the fight compared to the 90s show.
Without original soundtracks are not the same :c
the animation was great, but the atmosphere of the original, with the sun setting and the yellow eyes of kenshin when he goes full hitokiri are far better. still, great adaptation from the manga and great animation also.
Everyone talking about the old animation being better, thats sad, this animation was good regardless, its unfair to compare it to such masterpiece of an animation that was the original.
original was better unfortunately..
The original was not better at all i watched the original just vefore the new one came out and the og is worse this show follows the mNga more closely abd has way cleaner animation i can watch tge fight scenes without getting a headache from the constantly flashing screen furthermore the two little kids that where in the og for no other reason than Look were children where dropped to
The og might have been good for its time but its very much 90s this version does a lot of things a lot better
This World ain’t big enough for Both Ways
Where can I watch this??
This is still a good rendition of the fight; but it’s lost something everything feels a bit too fast and doesn’t build the same tension. The BGM in the original really sets the mood far better too. In the original anime this whole scene takes place inside the dojo, and if I remember that is the case with the manga too. Being indoors also gave the scene great lighting that enhanced the mood.
old animation was far better than today's
Where can I watch this anime series, can you help?

90s version still looks and feels better for some reason. I don't feel any soul in modern animation.
They took a fight that spanned two episodes that due to the pacing, suspense, and music, was potentially the best in the whole series and crammed the remake fight into a 6 minute brawl that felt completely rushed through. They did a good job ruining one of the biggest possible moments of the remake
Not bad, but the original anime was better.
I prefer this version
you are plain wrong. this version is much better and more loyal to the manga
@@definitlynotbenlente7671 not at all it basically it the same fight but with a way way worse direction , color choices and atmosphere.
@@definitlynotbenlente7671 It's just that you're used to seeing garbage, that's why this version seems better to you XD.
the old version blows this out of the water its not even close
I liked the original better. This is pretty cool too though
I see there are people criticizing the fact that kenshin's eyes didn't change or about his hair, but thing is, I'm a fan of the OG work the manga, and this is authentic to it, I really like the way things are going with the new Rurouni Kenshin animation.
Still vote for the old version of this fight scene.
This Animation doesn't look as tense like the OG was
the Music is Dull
The Old Anime was ahead of its Time
Bring back the OG voice actor
I love how (aside from zabuza) the rivals in this show got to stay badasa wven if they lose. It showed the dulling of skills in a peacful eea.
2023: WORSE WORSE WORSE
1990: BEST BEST BEST
I liked it. They are doing a good work. But it was impossible to remake this fight and do better than the OG. They did a safe version of it.
This remake doesn’t do the original justice. It’s still great but the og is on another level
