  • San Jose is grappling with hefty fines and strict regulations imposed by the Regional Water Quality Control Board due to significant pollution entering the streams that ultimately flow into San Francisco Bay. Mayor Matt Mahan of San Jose has emphasized that the normalization of homeless encampments along the waterway is no longer tolerable.

I thought it was illegal to camp near a waterway now. Clearly not being enforced.

I can't imagine how the unhoused community could treat the waterway like a toilet.

Many of the things happening are illegal and we simply aren’t enforcing laws on the books. I dare you to try as a tax paying hard working citizen to camp/poop/have fires/sell drugs etc on the streets. You will be charged accordingly.

You'll never be able to solve the homeless crisis completely. Why? It's too expensive. You have to be able to get the homeless to pitch in and do something.

Building housing isn't the answer. People like Sussy are too far gone to do anything but ruin any housing they might be given (and it WILL be given, not rented to them, because their own lifestyles have made them unable to ever earn enough to pay for it). It'll be given to them by politicians eager for a favorable mention on TV, and paid for with the taxes that The Party extracts from ordinary honest working people. The politicians in turn will be re-elected by those same ill-informed voters (the few who bother to vote, that is) who will see those TV clips and believe the lies they're being told.

    at 5:05 in the video:
There is an "emergency shelter" in place 40 feet from the apartment complex I live in. It was created in a renovated motel, and since it was established 7 months ago, my car was stolen along with 12 others, there have been over 20 break ins, there are homeless fights and drug fueled screaming matches in the parking lot, I am constantly catching residents of the center looking in car windows, going through the dumpster and leaving trash every where, and I have had to call the center many times to get their wandering, mentally compromised residents away from the apartment entrance. The final straw for me to try to break my lease (unsuccessfully) was when I had to shelter in place for 6 hours while Alameda Police responded with 9 police cars and a SWAT team to one of the paranoid schizophrenic patients at this facility who was pointing a gun at people. It is easy for a city official to say, " we all need to do our part" when they themselves can go to a home that isn't located near one of these sites. My response would be to any city official who thinks the responsibility belongs to the average Joe, "Do your part, because you signed up to make the city a better place for the people in it, not force responsibility onto citizens who aren't prepared/willing/trained to deal with this. It is dangerous, and creates even more problems. This is not a NIMBY mentality. This is a response to the complete and utter lack of accountability for the "non- profit" agency, (Cardena Health) that was allowed by shortsighted and half baked plans to aid the homeless, and allow the organizations to slam together zero accountability, zero security shelters, and create dangerous situations for homeless and the neighborhoods they pick for these sites.

Well-meaning politicians(IF there are any) should be careful about promising to tackle and solve problems that they don't fully understand. The homeless problem as in this case, is mostly and often a greater problem of substance abuse. Simply housing anyone with a substance abuse problem and removing them from the outdoors will solve the homelessness problem but will also create a new set of problems. I've lived with meth users for 8 years. Been there done, done that.

I have a solution, there is plenty of open land out by the Bay towards Alviso and Milpitas. Just set aside a large area for them out there, if you have them all in one place it will be easy to provide aid for them. There can be freshwater bathrooms showers even a soup kitchen. Oh, and build a tall barbed wire fence around the entire thing.
