I met the original Govt Mule lineup in 2000 when they opened for Steve Miller Band at the OKC Zoo. I had been obsessing over the Live With a Little Help record and was blown away to meet the guys and couldn’t believe how nice they were to me. They signed my tshirt and Warren even took time to answer questions I had about playing slide in open tuning. Been a lifelong fan ever since

Warren Haynes is absolutely a national treasure. Like you Rhett, I totally learned so much from his playing, also specifically that Dave album. I have also listened to that version of Cortez hundreds and hundreds of times and to now know how that came along…holy crap man!!! What a totally amazing guy!!! Great show again guys!!!

WOW! Such an insightful and engaging interview. Warren is a real journeyman of music, and a great curator/historian of blues/roots music. I especially loved his perspective on playing as a "guest" in an ensemble. What a fantastic musician & gentleman!

I remember seeing Gov Mule open up for Big Sugar in Edmonton, Alberta about 23 years ago… The tone of Warren’s Les Paul is still one of the best live Les Paul sounds I have ever heard. At the end of the show Warren got up with Big Sugar and did a 10 minute version of BTO’s Let It Ride. Awesome. 😎🎸👍

Being a bassist, I got to learn about Mr. Haynes’ playing at the time ‘The Deep End’ recordings came out, wich featured many of my favorite bassplayers celebrating the life and playing of the great Allen Woody.
Was it not Mike Gordon (bassist with Phish) that made the documentary that went with this project?
Since those albums (I think there were three (one live)), I really got to love Mr. Haynes’ playing and tone, and went back in time to check out everything he played on. He’s such a great artist!
    🖖

I met Warren after a show in 1993 when he was touring for Tales of Ordinary Madness record. He played a club that I had played many times before in the 1980’s in Ithaca NY. Beato’s old college town where he went to school and taught. The club had a good crowd but not packed as I don’t think they knew he was the Allman Brothers guitarist at the time. He was so nice to me and my future wife, took time to talk and signed a nice 8*10 photo for my wife and just gave it to her. Now days it would probably cost a $100 from some artists. His show was killer that night. I liked that album a lot. Much different than Mule music. Check it out if you haven’t.

I was at a bunch of those Allman Brothers 2009 Beacon Theater shows with many special guests including the Clapton shows.Warren mentioned these shows are easily available but they actually are not. Many of the TH-cam videos were yanked but a few remain however there is footage from their live webcast they had via Moogis and fans hope one day they will be released. Over the top incredible in every way! I was also at the 2008 Gov't Mule Halloween show and blessed to be front row as well. The recording came out great and many friends including myself are in the film which adds something special for those of us who were there. Thanks for asking so many great questions. We love hearing from him!!

Cool to see someone step away from the Fendershallvox crowd for amps. Gibson made some cool amps back in the day, even recently (okay, 20 years ago): witness the goldtone GA-15 and 30, especially the 30 with a 12" and a 10" speaker in the same cab. One of my favorite amps ever was my old GA15RV, even though I couldn't keep the reverb healthy.

I've seen Bob Dylan more than any other major artist in my life and I've never had to pay for a ticket. But that's not the story here. The only concert I've ever walked out of was Bob Dylan at the Louisville Center for the Arts in 93 or 94. The band must not have gotten the solo memo becuase Bob would stop singing, a band member would begin to improvise from wherever Bob left off, and then Bob would start soloing over the musician and then they'd defer to him. It was the weirdest band vibe I've ever seen on a stage. Bob looked super cool though. Epic black leather pants. After we left, I also had tickets to see David Lee Roth at smaller venue that I'd originally expected to skip. It was pretty wild to see a leathered Dylan and spandexed Roth doing his karate kicks all all in the same night. It's good to know they worked the co-soloing strategy.

I have to say, being a bit older myself and looking up to so many great guitarists of my generation and the generations of the past, the "guitar heroes" of today(& yesterday) are reaching the end of their time in this life, Eric Clapton, Eric Johnson, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Jimmie Page, Joe Walsh etc, are all in their sixties and up, with the loss of so many great guitarists like Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, Jeff Beck, Randy Rhoads, Duane Allman, Stevie Ray Vaughn and so on, Joe Bonamassa and John Mayer, the young bucks of the bunch, are in their mid forties. One has to wonder, who are the young guitar heroes of tomorrow?

Saw Warren and Govt. Mule in Dallas last week: excellent show, despite the 100-degree plus heat. Sadly the opening act, JBLZE, was hamstrung by a horrible mix: the kick drum was so hot as to nearly obscure every other instrument and voice on stage. Warren and company, however, took care of bidness.
