Great info! I think this is one of the most straight forward and complete vids about curing (removing organics) from dry rock without all the crazy extreme measure some ppl do. Appreciate the video. Im going to follow this for my new tank build.
I Start a 50 gal Marin tank and I cure my dead live rock in fresh water. First I leave it for 2 days in 6% vinegar water and then I clean it with a high pressure cleaner. Now I leave it for cobble of weeks in fresh water and change it every 2 days. The last station is to leave it some days in DI water and then I will put it in the tank.
Good stuff D Gu. Did you ever cure the rock in salt water before you put it in your tank? or is your tank already cycled and this a way to add more rock in a mature tank?
This is my first saltwater ever, i am actually doing it in fresh water. I am also doing a flush every 3 days. They are starting to come alive and looking good. i agree with you!
Hey Scott quick question? finished Dry rock cure. I will be aquascaping soon. How long do I have to putty and glue cured rock without saltwater? It would take an hour or so. Will cured rock be ok outside of saltwater while I aquascape? or is it a must to glue and aquascape in salt water? Hope you had a great 4th.
Just got some dry branch rock for my 6 gallon im going to be setting up and want to cure it ive never set up a tank with dry rock and sand .. when you said you use fresh water is it just from the tap or was it ro and did you add a heater and power head also was it in a sealed dark container or did it have the lid off any thing you can tell me about curing would be great thanks
I did use fresh water and it was just in one of my frag tanks converted to the job. Fresh water will break down the organics making water changes easier. For the cure to establish bacteria colonies saltwater will still need to be used.
Love your channel I understand the procedures for this but I got my dry rock in my new tank and I'm going to let it cycle no fish no invertebrates so this should be ok right as long as I check my levels like I always do?
I have 3 tanks ( 2 fresh & 1 salt) and I want to get it down to 1 fresh water 55 gal tank with all fish/turtle in one. Tanks are : 1 saltwater 55 gal tank with live rocks. four or five smaller live rocks, no more fish in this tank. but I kept it going because of pretty live rocks (lol) I did not want to kill the live rock. 1 freshwater 10 gal tank has: 1 jack Dempsey fish, 4 or 5 baby convicts, and 1 small snapping turtle, 1 freshwater 55 gal tank with 1 sucker fish (sucks on the glass algae) it's over 12" long, I do not know what kind it is. .......... Is there a way to put the salt water live rock into fresh water with ALL these fish/turtle? Will the live rock continue to be alive in fresh water? I like living rocks better than the fake ones. Thanks for reading this, and I hope you can help. Your Curing Dry Rock in Fresh water was great information. (I watched a lot of these kind of videos trying to find an answer to my questions. and yours was easier to understand) that's why I sent only you my question. You sounded like you really know what you are doing. :) Thanks again
+Diana Howen-Knapp I haven't ever tried what your asking. In theory if you soak your rock long enough to kill all the live rock and leach out the unwanted salts and nutrients. you should be fine. I'm not sure why but the fresh water people don' t seem to focus on live rock, but it will absolutely recolonize with bacteria and give you many of the same benefits it gave you in the saltwater tank. if it was me id try it. just test for ammonia, nitrates, ph and salinity before adding your livestock. you will lose the coralline algae that makes the live rock purple. Cool question.
Always ro/di with reef tanks. And seeding from snails or already established live rock that has some on it is a great fast way. Otherwise keeping consistent perimeters and taking care of the tank will allow coralline algae to grow.
That tank looks beautiful, but that hair... My God man..
Xaz371 😂🤣🤣🤣
I know come on man

That tank is so awesome! It makes me want to get a blue tang again.
Glad you cleared that up for some of the newer people to the hobby

Looks great! How's Dori's Ich issue?
So far so good on the ich.

Did you use rodi water or just some regular sink water
I used RODI it's always the safest option.

I know this is an old thread, But did you use RO/DI fresh, or tap water ? Thx
+2008MrsKim I just used tap water. RODI would be better but I don't actually think it's necessary in this application.
Thank you !!!
Did you heat the water
No, its not really necessary.

thank you for taking time to give advice to me. Haven't done yet, but I will. :)
TAP WATER OR RO/Di ... which one is safe for reef tank
I used RODI. I didn't want to introduce anything new into the water.
how to grow corolline algae
Always ro/di with reef tanks. And seeding from snails or already established live rock that has some on it is a great fast way. Otherwise keeping consistent perimeters and taking care of the tank will allow coralline algae to grow.
No reason to cure in salt water long as your ok with cycling the tank after your done as they are two separate entities.
Omg that hair is hurting my eyes
I have coral rock I bought from a pawnshop. Not sure if it’s live or not. How do I treat it to make it safe to put in my freshwater tank⁉️
Put it in bleach for a week and soak in water for a day. that's it. Set up your scape.
