A prime example of a humble professional genius. He only played what fit the song, and tried to keep it to the level of the surrounding musicians. He could've tore it up further..... but he didn't. Sign of a true gentleman and professional.
My girl , her family and me just saw Tommy saturday night sept. 4th. First time for me and i must say , I'm not worthy.....I'm not worthy.... INCREDIBLE PERFORMNCE!!! GUITAR GOD IS TOMMY, everyone should go see him if they get a chance. Oh and Ron keep on rockin....!!!
I recently saw tommy at bb kings. tommy was playing with his brother. he played the drums the bass , keyboards He was one of the most incredible musicians ive ever seen im my life.!! IM going to see him again next month. cant wait. at bb kings he rocked the effin house believe me.
Electric or acoustic Tommy Emmanuel is outstanding! His playing is excellent here he is just not playing solo he is backing up..and did an outsanding job! world class! thanks for the upload ! :D
great to see Tommy still going for a blat on the old Tele, brings back some old 80's memories !! the man is just as incredible on electric as acoustic.
Electric is what he and his brother Phil predominantly played in Australia. I've watched them, with their band of the time, riffing on Al Di Meola numbers at the Crest hotel, in Elizabeth Point, Sydney, years ago. He's actually pretty restrained here, in order to stay with the rest of the band.
Great job! Tommy is such an extraordinary musician. It has to be a tough adjustment going from a one man band/ performance to a lead player in a band, especially one he's just sitting in with on a borrowed guitar. He pulls it off quite well though. It's not the guitar, it's the guitar player!
@macmanue I've played for 31 years and taught guitar. Tom is by far the best guitarist I have ever had the pleasure of watching play. Steve Vai mentions that aswell on video. I beleive the video is called center stage.
Saw him play with Brad Paisley, Saw him Play with Keith Urban, Saw him play with Vince Gill...... They were all amazed at his paying... They stood back and watched him..... They ..... some of the best players on the planet........ were amazed !!!! The guy is just incredible....
@ReeseMac - Chet Atkins, Tommy's idol since childhood, bestowed upon Tommy the title of Certified Guitar Player. Only 4 peeps received that from Chet before he died. Tommy & Chet became very good friends.
All I can say is GOD bless Chet Atkins, rest his soul, I've seen Chet play with Tommy and all he can do is shake is head, Tommy Jeery Reed and Chet.. if theres a rock and roll heaven, thery got to have one hell of a band..!!!
Heard Tommy interviewed on Radio4 World Service about a month ago. Never heard of him before, I ask myself WHY?????????????????????????. He is a genius. Chet Atkins must be up there smiling down.
Playing harmonica in order to stand out in the band like this big you need to play this playing its called playing in harp modes same as guitar. To add up take note on this Tommy Emmanuel is an Electric lead guitarist of his family band back in the days in australia. Ciao
Actually, what he's trying to say here is that Em is the relative minor of G and contains the same notes, only it begins at the 6th scale step, E, instead of G. When you play the G scale starting at E you're playing the E relative minor or natural minor. which has a flatted 3d, 6th and 7th.
The band is Blue Onyx with sheriff Bill Whitman. His guitar is borrowed on the spot. I take it this was pretty much impromptu. Wish the recording was from closer without so much room sound, but hey . . . I saw a vid here of Tommy playing elec. on an Aussie TV show, so I know he does from time to time.
How great to see TE lend his amazing artistry to this. How sad it is to see the nasty, mean-spirited comments some make on what they see as the inferior musicality of others on stage here. When did the existence of TH-cam, and the opportunity it gives anyone and everyone to become an amateur critic in full public view, excuse people from exercising a little "common" decency? If you don't like someone's music, there's no (adult) need to insult him for trying. There might be a childish one.
@Greg321m Ya it is. I play almost solely acoustic guitar, but I have no problem picking up an electric and playing. They are the same exact instrument, people who think they are different (to play) are usually amateurs.
I got that, Lee, but I've certainly seen Tommy Emmanuel do much better on electric. There were some serious time issues, and I think that relates to the lack of monitoring more than the players. He's playing up in the Woodlands soon.
His the best acoustic guitarist, but still even playing eletric guitar, he is better than most of players, such as mark knopfler, eric clapton, santana, etc..
Actually, I think Chet Atkins said that about Lenny Breau. My quick search of the net found that Chet called Tommy the best "fingerstyle" player and also described him as his "favorite" player. I found far more references to the Breau quote. Sorry to be nit-picking, and especially sorry if I'm wrong, but I'm a big Lenny Breau fan (Tommy too!).
@mjwoodworth I understand what you're trying to say, but my point is simple. An electric guitarist uses his amp as compensation for the decreased use of fret pressure that an acoustic guitar requires. An acoustic guitarist knows he must PRESS on the strings for the guitar to make sound. Give an acoustic guitar to most electric guitarists and they'll suck. Yes, they quicker fingering the frets because they only need to lightly tap, but an acoustic guitarist can pick this up very quickly.
@JACOB3AN He sounds like everyone else because he's playing with a group. That's kind of what you do when you play with groups, no one person necessarily shines all the time, they just have their moments.
anyone that is familiar with Tommy's body of works , will know that he is just as dedicated to electric as acoustic. He released an album in 2001called the very best of tommy emmanuel in which one of the 2 cd's was dedicated to electric
Because of the higher tension though, its very rare you are required to do extreme string bends on an acoustic. There are techniques that you can learn for electric guitar which are simply not possible on an acoustic and vice versa. Both electric and acoustic styles require immense dedication, because of this, you'd be naive to suggest one would be tougher than the next.
Just a minor nitpick here but in order to generate enough tension to drive the soundboard, acoustic guitars are usually strung with much heavier gauge strings than electrics. Given that I would actually argue the acoustic guitar is tougher to play..
@mjwoodworth I play both keyboard and a little bit of guitar, and my experience with acoustic piano vs electronic keyboard with unweighted action mirrors my experience with acoustic guitar versus electric. When I practice, I only practice on an acoustic keyboard for the very reasons I've stated. Just my opinion.
@Greg321m I'm not being condescending, I agree there are differences, but when it comes down to playing a guitar, if you can play one you can play all three. Same scale, same tuning (so long as they are in standard). True you can play different styles, but honestly that only goes so far. The notion i was rejecting was that somehow Tommy Emmanuel wouldn't be as good on an electric as he is on acoustic.
im a guitar player, and im with you on that, with a few issues. i play in about 6 diferent tunings, on an acoustic, electric, and steel bodied guitar. they all feel diferent, but they're all a guitar. its not like changing from a harp to a guitar. speaking of which did anyone else thing that harmonica solo just sounded terrible? off key even? im probly just going nuts.
A prime example of a humble professional genius. He only played what fit the song, and tried to keep it to the level of the surrounding musicians. He could've tore it up further..... but he didn't. Sign of a true gentleman and professional.

This is what music is supposed to be: shared, fun, entertaining, and completely natural.
agreed, not only because he is absolutely amazing at guitar, but because he is fun to watch and a cool guy! Real entertainer
Talented people enjoying themselves is awesome. A genius enjoying himself is divine!
Tommy is a seriously underrated electric player, kicks ass on a tele
love tommy, always brings a smile. what a lucky band! best gig they ever played probably :o)
He gave tha band the gig of their life.... Its nobel of him i think.... they will NEVER forget it.
I can't believe that I've heard of Tommy Emmanuel but today is the first time I've seen him play. Dang. Just Dang is all I can say.
Making everybody look bad since the day he was born
Marcus Segura lol
+Marcus Segura Tommy is cooler than the other side of the pillow
+Marcus Segura best commend ive ever read xD
I was at this concert. It was a great show.
Great job! Tommy is such an extraordinary musician. It has to be a tough adjustment going from a one man band/ performance to a lead player in a band, especially one he's just sitting in with on a borrowed guitar. He pulls it off quite well though. It's not the guitar, it's the guitar player!
The great thing about "subscribing" to guys like you is that you get real litlle jewels like this one in your mailbox for coffee. Great post! Thanks.
saw the Emmanual Bros at the Crows Nest hotel in the mid 80's .. blew the place away .. they are somethin else
Tommy is the only one that is happy to be there. What a bunch of sad old dudes.
Спасибо, Томми!!!!!!🙋💕💕💕💕🎼
@macmanue I've played for 31 years and taught guitar.
Tom is by far the best guitarist I have ever had the pleasure of watching play. Steve Vai mentions that aswell on video. I beleive the video is called center stage.
Woooow, this is just incredible. Tommy has more talent in his toes than the whole band together!
Tommys carrier started on electric.,
He has made about 4 albums with electric guitar.
The name of the song is "Working Man Blues" and it was written by Merle Haggard and was released Jun 30th 1969.
how great is this?! thank you for sharing this with us :)
Tommy you are incredible!
lol at end, "WOOOW...that is AWESOMEEEE MANNNN!"
It's Tommy Emmanuel. He could pick up a old beat up, unplayable '60s Teisco and blow your mind.
He doesn't look at all depressed - it is the shadow of his mustache that gives that impression. I think he is thoroughly enjoying it!
lol the harmonica solo @ 1:14 :) looooooooooooooooooooool
Tommy rules !
ha! such an awesome improviser!
That's just Tommy. Don't get no better.
I can hear some determination licks coming through in his playing!
Harp guy was in the wrong key but, hey... the tambourine was spot on... Tommy was his usual, brilliant self...
i was thinking the very same thing!
it doesnt matter who hes playing with, he just steals the show
Saw him play with Brad Paisley, Saw him Play with Keith Urban, Saw him play with Vince Gill...... They were all amazed at his paying... They stood back and watched him.....
They ..... some of the best players on the planet........ were amazed !!!! The guy is just incredible....
I'm glad you said that!
i love that he plays acoustic more while he tours, but its nice to see him play electric. either way he's inhumane
Brilliant video! Tommy's the master! Thanks for posting! Any other videos from Tommy's gig?
Love to hear Tommy and Redd Volkaert jamming together on this one!
so freaking nice
If you don't already have Tommy's INCREDIBLE record "The Journey", you seriously need to pick it up, he wears a Tele out for most of the album.
Nobody even cracked a smile during the harp' solo...Oh man.....you fired.
Tommy seems to have lots of fun =)
you know what ... i take it back .. ur right .. way different styles like you said .. ..
@ReeseMac - Chet Atkins, Tommy's idol since childhood, bestowed upon Tommy the title of Certified Guitar Player. Only 4 peeps received that from Chet before he died. Tommy & Chet became very good friends.
best guitar player ever

the drummer speeds up after Tommy solo, this was there biggest day of all playing with this cat!
Bravo!!!
WOW, did you noticed how the drummer entered on the wrong beat, and how tommy corrected him, he is such a cool guy, amazing!
Tommy IS Guitar GOD!
+joeguitargod Tommy Emmanuel, were not worthy!, Were not worthy!!!
We aren't at all!

The guitar was born with Tommy holding it!!
@Greg321m
Ya it is. I play almost solely acoustic guitar, but I have no problem picking up an electric and playing. They are the same exact instrument, people who think they are different (to play) are usually amateurs.
Thanks mate!
@aleartha16 it's Merle haggard- working man blues
Tommy: "It's ok rhythm player, I'll play your part too."
Workin' Man Blues by Merle Haggard! Love it ... For guitarists: Roy Nichols is a king, he played on the original. Check him out!
My teacher said if you mastered the acoustic guitar, You would be just toying with an electric one... And tommy is the proof...
Awesome version. Anyone knows how's that song called, by the way?
and that was the only song done that night!
I got that, Lee, but I've certainly seen Tommy Emmanuel do much better on electric. There were some serious time issues, and I think that relates to the lack of monitoring more than the players. He's playing up in the Woodlands soon.
Oh god, you should see my playing-face at times man. You'd laugh your ass off probably xD
the begining sounds like Atlanta rhythm sections "Jukin", go check it out!
tommy on telecaster, Gaton on telecaster, two genious
dam straight bro!!!

The guitar god!
at 4:49 the rhythm guitarist on the LP just shows a tick of disbelief of how much Tommy has to say in his solo...
anyone that is familiar with Tommy's body of works , will know that he is just as dedicated to electric as acoustic. He released an album in 2001called the very best of tommy emmanuel in which one of the 2 cd's was dedicated to electric
was waiting for a tambourine solo after the keyboard haha
Томми Эммануэль - молодец!
i wish Tommy, mark knopfler, pizzizini, paco de lucia, and sungha jung concert alltogether..
how about it?
HAHAHA THE HARMONICA PART
@JACOB3AN so give every electric guitar player an acoustic and they become Tommy Emmanuel?

Yea he said that he plays electric about once a year tho :). Plus, he just kinda walked out and borrowed the guitar...
