  • With age comes wisdom. As well as baggage. Generations were never as different from each other as today. This complicates matters for families, as well as political movements. We try to navigate that space and talk about our experiences, tips, praxis and tricks.

I've always been under the impression that if you were to talk to a boomer or republican about socialism without using the "buzz words" that set them in a rage, they would actually very likely agree with you. It's like, the words themselves are what they recognize and have been told is evil, but if you were to explain the words without inherently using them, you'd be able to have more of a conversation without them flipping shit, you know?

I've been trying this for several years with my reactionary (and liberal) working class friends and relatives in the US. I've had a surprising amount of "success" in finding what seems to be genuine agreement on all sorts of important issues, but it seems to only ever last about as long as the conversation, or until they retreat back to the familiar reactionary (or liberal) echo-chambers. Subsequent conversations begin right back at GOP (or DNC) talking points. It's like "Groundhog's Day," but not funny.

I think I occupy a semi-unique place in this respect because my holiday dinner tables are filled with real enlightening conversations about the issues our society and family face. Like when I debate my uncle about Lenin, it is real debate about Lenin, not a total reactionary-fascist's IDEA of Lenin because my uncle is not a reactionary-fascist american and just for that I am so grateful to so many things and people. I am genuinely sorry to anyone whose family or loved ones has been consumed by the forces of capitalism and reaction, good luck and never stop educating yourself and others about building socialism.

Yeah I’ve always been sort of confused about the fixation a lot of people seem to have around radicalizing boomers (and reactionaries in general as this episode veers into a bit). Like I guess it’s nice to be able to have a civil discussion about politics with your older relatives and one less reactionary in the world is always a good thing but if I’m being completely honest we don’t need grandma in the vanguard and our radicalization efforts should be focused more on poor people who have understandably checked out of the political options that liberal democracy makes available.

On immigrants also being workers, etc... And on traditions. We have one untainted one in Austria-Mai 1st Kampftag der Arbeiterklasse.
The Mai1 Labor Day parade, of the Communist Party of Austria(KPÖ) , in the second largest city in the country, Graz, which was spearheaded by their new communist mayor ( for the liberals, she´s also the first female mayor, yeah!) comrade Elke Kahr, sparked a huge outcry outcry from MSM and other neoliberals, because right behind the mayor, who carried a peace flag, the KJÖ(Communist Youth of A) marched with a large red banner saying something along the lines of "The boarders are not between the peoples, but between above and below"(poor translation attempt. But meaning the divide is between classes, not countries).
This lead to a huge outcry that `the communists`are supporting Putin and don´t support Asov, nor uncritically support the ukrainian government. The fact that the KPÖ is talking a lot about how important Austrian neutrality is in times like these and that it is a slap in the face to the poor and those effected the most by the current inflation, that our Green/conservative government pulls 6 Billion€ out of a hat for military spending, while alledgedly not having any money to help the people who need it, made everything even worse and was mentioned in multiple articles about the demonstration.
My point being: I have never witnessed a campaign of censorship and propaganda in my whole life as intense as the current one concerning Ukraine. Pro imperialist, pro US, pro EU, pro proxy war and uncritically repeating and supporting every single thing Ukraine´s government claims or wants is the party line, which you are not allowed to critizise even the slightest.
This is already effecting the left and will effect all antiimperialist and socialist movements and groups all around the world in a very negative way, if we don´t watch out and do something about it.
But at the same time this is a very good time to organise and to educate people.
Workers and opressed peoples of the world unite

Personally I don't think Marx would have been down with this "us and them" attitude.
There are so called boomers who are well off and probably a hello of lot more who are struggling and a fair number who have always been revolutionary. You can't generalise about an entire generation and try to pit older people against younger. Older people are also parents and grandparents most of whom have done their best to get young people grown up in spite of very difficult western political and financial conditions for the working class.
It is absolutely worth appealing to any human whether they are young or old if you have something useful to offer them, not just a patronising attitude.

I haven't met any older working class folks who don't complain about their boss and job. They often have false consciousness, blaming deteriorating material conditions on affirmative action, immigrants, "kids these days", etc. Material conditions have never been worse, everyone is feeling the pinch. It's very effective to take that frustration and redirect it from a nebulous "other" towards the people actually screwing them - their boss who's too busy golfing to come in to work half the time, who owns a huge house and a dozen sports cars- and then they start becoming class conscious when they have a tangible person to focus their anger at.

My thoughts on "deprogramming" the baby boomer generation: don't bother. The boomers are those born from 1946 to 1964. At the older end of this group they're retired and probably closer to death. Converting them to socialism is pointless as they'll likely not live long enough to do anything beneficial. At the younger end they're close to retiring, some may be already, and they're going to be staunch defenders of their worldview. Any example of successfully enlightening your parents/grandparents is wholly anecdotal and very limited. It took me many years and many different approaches and arguments to convince my dad that global warming was bad, then that it was something we had to take action on, then that it was the fault of humanity. Essentially you need to do a realistic cost-benefit analysis on the amount of time and effort it will probably take for you to successfully change someones mind relative to the amount of benefit it will actually have.
As much as these 101 type videos are useful and enjoyable, I hope you guys will go deeper soon. Maybe even just "102" type stuff, whatever that would be.

    • @KickinRadTopHat
      @KickinRadTopHat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@Ewido Completely agree, one of the most important skills you need to develop as someone trying to pitch socialism/communism is being able to recognize when you're wasting your time on someone. I don't really understand the fixation some people have on radicalizing a generation that has largely for better or worse made up their minds about the world and often materially benefited from the system you are trying to dissuade them from supporting. Not to say that older people are completely useless to a political project, because they aren't, but I don't think grandma should be as high a priority on the radicalization list as someone who is young, poor, and (most importantly imo) checked out of the options that liberal democracy has made available to us.
Also, I love all the Deprogram boys but I agree that I'd like to see some "meatier" content soon. The 101 stuff often feels like they're retreading points they've all already made videos about.

The problem isn't skills or work ethic because I casually do the job of 2 to 3 people normally and yet I still get paid the same or less. The problem is they will not pay you if they do not have to. I know people that for over 10 years have basically been a machine operator, quality, maintenance, engineer as well as other things and they still don't get paid. Even what I do. That's definitely not because they don't have any skills and no work ethic.

My parents are such unfortunately typical boomers. It's so fucking sad. They are both way too smart for that. Academically, they are very educated, they both have masters degrees, they're both professionals, now retired, I don't understand how they're falling for this shit. I think it's their mercury exposure honestly. I'm not kidding it sounds funny, but I think it's their Mercury exposure that they had throughout the 40s 50s and 60s especially my mom. they both have multiple Mercury dental fillings. I don't think they've ever got them replaced. We all know Mercury is serious neurotoxin. And it's cumulative so it adds up over time. I think that's the chief reason honestly I do, because I'm not sure what else makes sense. I'd understand if they were simple, or uneducated, or their ethnic and social and professional backgrounds were different, but they're not. So I continue to be confused and not fully grasp the solution, which as we all know is maddening for anybody. But if I had to hazard a guess I definitely have to go with the Mercury hypothesis as to the true explanation. I just think that it's been brain degeneration over time. Not to the point where they can't dress themselves or feed themselves, but just in simple ways that affect their ability to process certain kinds of information and not be afraid of the entire world and of merely existing, into fall prey to complete idiocy, ignorance, barely warmed over racism, petty hatreds, and all the other brain rot that comes in from the Right and Fox News.

From personal experience, it is nearly impossible to convince an older generation person with high-level education who has been drinking the capitalist propaganda all his/her life, that the system is bad at its core. This is, in my view, because if this was to happen, that person would go through a mental breakdown, which could lead to serious health consequences (though sometimes it might not be a bad thing).

I think something to bring up is a core difficulty of the whole challenge of discussing these things with an older conservative person is that there's so much about a socialist movement that outright nakedly promises to take things away from them. This isn't just fighting against the "four olds" as Mao put it (something admittedly necessary for someone with a sociological problem to go through but it is not pleasant) , but in the context of trying to convince an American boomer you're talking about an end to the exploitation of the third world by the US hands. Something that is an objective moral good, but Marxists seem to believe that the exploitation of the third world actually enriches the average American or European (as opposed to only benefitting a small subset of the ruling class.) Meaning if this theory of Marxism is true, and the Marxist revolution succeeds in the US you are promising to make the average American *POORER* by ending this exploitation of the third world for their benefit.
Now, I propose that you abandon this hogwash idea that exploitation of slaves overseas makes the American or European *WORKING CLASS* richer, it's a losing argument and it's also objectively false. Yes yes I know someone somewhere wrote a book about how Europe and the US don't pay fair prices for labor and goods form the third world, often creating basically slave armies in the neo colonial states. Many people take this fact and say "this is how Europe and the US pay for welfare!" No it is not, it actually harms the welfare systems. As we know corporate profits are almost impossible to tax because they can re-define profits out of existence. So the only way to tax them is the value of the goods as it is exchanged at various stages in the economy (value added tax, sales tax) and the value of services / labor in the economy. So the third world exploitation has reduced the number of jobs at home, that's lower taxes, outsourcing is used as a threat to coerce local workers into accepting lower benefit packages and pay again lowering taxes the state gets, it also ultimately accelerates the deflationary tendency on the price of goods again reducing taxes. The workers don't wind up with more in spite of goods being cheaper every year because the government is coerced into cutting services due to the forces pushing taxes down, the workers wages in relation to real expenditures (healthcare ect) is shrinking and so to make up for it they use debt. In effect the "cheaper" tv they buy from an exploited third world country is actually more expensive to an exponential degree due to needing to be purchased with debt. The "cheaper"' tv is bought at 20% interest in price.
The end result is that even most businesses watch their profits dwindle, the government sees it's tax revenue dwindle, the workers see their real earnings dwindle and all of that wealth flows into a small hands of financiers who underwrite the working class debts and paid out the initial investment to establish the infrastructure to exploit the third world in the first place. Since the 1980s this is called the "financialization of the economy." Nowhere in this chain does the use of foreign slave labor does it improve conditions in the US or Europe, it actually makes them WORSE. We see this every time labor is squeezed like this, it always makes things worse. The chattel slave economy of the American south did not work. Look at a map of infrastructure and wealth output of the US north VS the South, the north won the civil war by having ten times the economy the south did. The south in 1850 was described as "desolate as wartorn France" because there was no reason to hire a free man and pay him a living wage, there was no knowledge of or reason to invest in productivity per captia increases, or infrastructure. All they wanted was more land and more slaves. Contrary to lefitst talking points, no slavery does not work, it is not an effective economic system and the US was not "built on slavery." That's objectively false and the US greatest leaps in American industry didn't occur until after chattel slavery's end.

This Boomer has struggled her whole life, has never owned a home, and is terrified of her looming retirement as she has student loan debt that will be garnished at up to 15% of her Social Security pittance. I haven't been able to save because my adult children land here when they are in crises, and I take care of them (will always do this until I can't, no regrets). I have never lived alone since leaving home myself, and have single parented most of my adult life.
My kids and grandkids are always my highest priority, and they also struggle.
I have a good job and for the next few years will be ok but, my plan for retirement? Find a good, reliable, easily maintained comfortable car before I retire in case I have to live in it. I am not kidding.
I have participated in more than protest and plan on many more as I watch our country degenerate more and more everyday.

College wasn't free in the '60s and '70s, but it was a lot cheaper.
Living in one of the poorest US states, housing prices and overall cost of living isn't too bad, just stay out of major urban areas.
If you're not too fussy àbout where you live, it's affordable. Buying houses or land is still practical. Having few, if any, building codes in rural areas is a good thing.
Some years ago I saw a " punk house" built from salvaged materials...a building inspector's nightmare that stood up to 90+ mph winds.
Jobs now....finding a full time job isn't too difficult. If you can take in oxygen and blow out carbon dioxide, you can find a full time job with benefits.
There's a labor shortage now, and starting wages are $16+ per hour, even at some fast food jobs .
College...four years? Call it a hundred grand when you're done. In the '80s you could work part time and pay for college as you go ( I worked at a college then).
My views on socialism are mixed. Lotsa promises, but promises and delivery are different.
I really don't have that much of a problem with billionaires..Maybe Space X will get to Mars and set up a colony before everyone else.
Space X builds spacecraft at an incredible rate.
If they get to Mars first, can they claim ownership? There was ( is?) a space treaty that covers that, but would it apply to a private company?
I think you can own an asteroid ( like Psyche 16..chock full of rare earth elements worth trillions), but not sure about an entire planet. Mars, Inc.?

1:10:47 I would say Memorial Day and 4th of July Independence Day are better examples of non-consumerist holidays in the USA. We typically just have a simple gathering of family/friends and enjoy the day with nice weather and a cookout. Thanksgiving has been ruined by the insanity that is Black Friday.
