The country will ground to a halt if the policy is pursued with it's current timeline. There will be thousands ,if not millions of job loses in the motor trade. and other sectors. The most vulnerable in society, will be left behind,on cost, including the inability to charge ,due to probably residing in property's such as flats and multiple occupancy accomodation. Service workers on minimum wage such as carers who rely on cars , in the rural areas ,from what I have seen driving cars more than 12-15 years of age will not be able to afford EVs . Young drivers will be priced out completely. Those who have money need not worry. Second hand petrol and diesel cars will likely see huge incease in prices rises as 2030 approaches. Why should the UK ,that produces a minimal amount of pollution, destroy it's economy and inflict this on the population, when the worst polluting countries, such as China,Russia and India and USA continue do nothing .This is a ill conceived vanity project invented by those who understand nothing .😢

One by one, the legacy manufacturers will go bankrupt, the only choice would will be Chinese built EVs. Remember communist countries where the only choice was a trabant or a lada ?

If the UK went all electric then the caravan and motorhome industry and associated tourism will be finished. I drive a non-plug in mild hybrid diesel XC90 towing a 1900k caravan giving me a near 300 mile range towing plus another 100 miles when solo on arrival before the fuel light come on. The new Volvo line up does not included diesel in any form only a petrol non plug in mild hybrid so the towing mpg and and all important torque will be much less.
On our routes we take I've not seen one drive through EV charger suitable for towing outfits or motorhomes and if there was imagine the queues.
Some touring sites have maybe 2 or 3 charging points and don't allow charging at the pitch due to aging infrastructure so this would need addressing.

      1) 200 miles is enough for 99% of trips. 2) Most EVs charge overnight so no issue. Away from home people stop for 20 to 30 minute breaks anyway every few hours so charge takes no extra time. 3) Currently 785 hubs of 6 or more Rapid chargers and there are another 591 in planning and power supply. Its only a perceived problem by people who don't drive an EV. 4) It is expensive to charge in public. It is actually just as expensive as petrol per mile. Outrageous isn't it. But what's your point there? 5) Yes. Thats true. But it won't be long before parity. 7) Every dealer where you buy EVs will be happy to service their cars.

What about builders like myself i drive between 120 & 200 miles a day & carry a tonne of tools/materials in my van and ev will never be suitable for people like myself
Government shouldn't be forcing this ridiculous mandate

    • @Hitstirrer
      @Hitstirrer 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@pauldavies7251 It's 785 x 6 = 4710. Plus another 591 in planning x 6 = 3546. Plus many thousands of sites with up to 6 chargers. As well as dozens of Tesla supercharge sites with dozens of Rapids that are now open to all EVs. That is enough for today's fleet. And they will increase as the fleet increases just as they have done over the last five years. People without drives can use those. They are expensive though. But guess what, they would then be paying exactly the same price per mile as they do at present to fill a petrol car. Your van use is a small % of the entire fleet and if you drive that far it must be 6 hours of your day sitting driving. However, I absolutely agree with you that inept politicians have got this mandate totally wrong. People will always react to a forced agenda. And that starts people writing anti-EV comments which are factually incorrect as they try to resist change. EVs are perfectly able to stand on their own feet and if left alone and people were not being pushed they would try them out and find them to be 'better' all round. All of the negatives posted about EVs are out of date. Perhaps five years ago the points were valid. But not now. People should take time to update their knowledge base and stop just repeating what they are told to believe by TH-camrs with an agenda for clickbait.

I think that we call EVs zero emission vehicles is the biggest con of all. They're not zero emission and infact they have a huge Co2 foot print. To offset this, an EV takes 8 years to catch up with the combustion engine vehicles. EVs may have a place but don't be fooled by the hype that you're doing good by buying them. E fuels are the best option in my opinion. We already have the infrastructure for it, prices would stabilize so could be affordable very quickly, all current combustion vehicles can run on it and its zero emissions. Just to also add, its far better for the environment to keep and old car running on E fuels than producing these horrid EVs. If these policy makers had any concern for the environment, this would be the way forward but this is not the case. Taxing us out of our current combustion vehicles and into EVs only serves to fill their pockets. Sorry if I sound negative regarding EVs but anyone with any common sense can see that this is not the way forward.

Albiet my caravan is a small one so I would struggle to upgrade to a bigger one with my car which is the Audi A3 TFSIe. The petrol engine is a 1.4. It does however deliver fantastic fuel economy its has to be said. Between 55mpg when no charge and up to and beyond 110mpg as a hybrid. Richard there are a lot of us that enjoy caravanning. The car manufacturers are not catering really for them. A PHEV is to complicated you kind of need the battery systems to be switched off for towing. Non of the PHEVs I’ve looked at are manual and even using an auto box for towing can cause overheating issues. EVs and PHEvs have been designed to move people with the lowest emissions and not as practical vehicles for recreation. Your 60g of CO2 is bang on because if you take in to account the carbon output of the grid 182g of CO2per kWh (see below) of CO2 the EV charging losses and EV efficiency you get a similar figure for remote EV emissions.
A quick summary of the governments transmission factor report
The latest UK Government Emissions factors were published on 8th July 2024. These figures can be used for accurately reporting the carbon impact of business energy use.
We have provided a summary of the main points in relation to grid electricity and natural gas emission factors.
Note that the electricity grid factors are based on 2022 grid mix data. This lag is standard and the 2024 factors should be used for calendar year 2024 emissions reporting.
The transmission and generation (T&D) emissions factor for grid electricity has increased from 2023 figure of 0.01792 kg CO2e per kWh to 0.01830 kg CO2e per kWh.
The generation emissions factor for grid electricity has not changed significantly from the 2023 figure, 0.20707 kg CO2e per kWh, to 0.20705 kg CO2e per kWh.
This means that the combined factor that most companies use is marginally higher than the 2023 figure of 0.22499 kg CO2e per kWh at 0.22535 kg CO2e per kWh.
The natural gas emissions factor for 2024 has decreased slightly from the 2023 figure of 0.18293 kg CO2e per kWh to 0.18290 kg CO2e per kWh.

We currently are seeing so much of the infrastructure for net zero manufactured in China which has the worse environmental standards, that anything that happens here will be dwarfed by comparison. I agree with setting limitations on hybrids, mild and total ice vehicles ect as it is logical way forward. The zero emission target of 2030 is a pipedream from the government.
A EV doesn't work for me because of my job traveling around the country testing ventilation and heating systems. So the range and ability to charge would be a hassle in order to make it work.

Nearly all charge at home overnight. And use power that is 'spare' overnight as industry shuts down then. Some then also stop once if on a long trip but only a few do that. They stop at one of around 800 large charge hubs of 6 to 12 Rapid chargers and rarely queue. And there are another 600 hubs of at least 6 Rapid chargers awaiting planning permission to cover next years growth. You are imagining things that won't happen.

@@JackOfski Try asking the people who run the grid rather than repeating what you have been told to repeat. They are not concerned and at present, they welcome an increase in EV use to mop up excess overnight power that causes them to shut down some plants overnight. There are plans to store that same excess overnight power as well so that it can boost any increase in day use without building more generation. Do you really think that the grid management is sitting there 'wringing its hands' in misery? Or is it at all possible that they have seen the changing needs and are planning accordingly? As to Rapid charging issues. That can indeed be a concern for older EVs using older type batteries. But in reality, there are still hundreds of EV taxis that ONLY rapid charge and have racked up 200,000 miles. That view is also being overturned by the latest battery chemistry as they can tolerate rapid and high charge rates much better these days. In fact, a lot of adverse comments we see these days is based on old information from the early days of EV use. People really should update their knowledge base rather than regurgitate outdated fears that no longer apply.

While China continues to burn huge amounts of coal and many countries still rely on oil and gas, the transition to EVs - from a climate point of view - will make virtually no difference.
The government cannot force consumers to buy EVs.
Since EVs are not the solution for all consumers, the ZEV mandate is doomed to fail. The ZEV mandate is crazy and the financial burden on car and van manufacturers as they transition to EVs will cause untold damage (job losses, etc.).
EVs are best suited for people who can charge their vehicles at home and only use them for short journeys.
There are many issues limiting the adoption of EVs: high purchase price; limited and expensive public charging; range anxiety.
Mass adoption of EVs will require additional generation of electricity and improvements to the transmission grid infrastructure. The consumer will ultimately pay for these capital projects in higher taxes.

Li based chemistries fires are highly carcinogenic even just to the skin and its smoke. What is in place to deal with this, what will F&RS need to have to manage these situations, management of old/damaged assets and the post processing of them?
Huge amount of hidden costs that seemingly are overlooked notwithstanding the fact the generation and transmission is still a huge headache and won’t be able to viably meet the need/expectation.
Superchargers are the gold standard, rarely are they out of service or damaged/poor condition and service is reliable - this cannot be said for any of the competition/alternates.
Surely for people to embrace BEVs, accessibility and reliability of the recharging service needs to be as ubiquitous, reliability, available and cheap.

Let the engineers sort out which technology we use, not the politicians. The Clio you mention is actually a full hybrid, in that the electric motor and battery are able to power the vehicle in EV mode directly for a short period up to about 30mph. A mild hybrid typically is just assisting a petrol engine, very small battery, and low voltage.

What is being proposed is ill considered legislation and cannot go ahead without causing significant adverse effects. As I understand it it only applies to passenger cars and not bikes or commercials. If it’s just about reducing CO2 then making changes to the construction industry would have a far greater impact effect e.g. low carbon cost concrete.
Construction vehicles still produce vast amounts of CO2 and as they use red diesel they don’t even pay full fuel duty.
Once again the government proposals will hurt the very people that voted them into power in the first place.
I’d be hugely surprised should this policy take effect in 2030. I just don’t see how the national grid is supposed to provide power for the plethora of new EVs that will need to connect to the grid by December 2029.

Another thing. E-fuels are a con. The analogy I use is a gin and tonic. If it’s an E-10 G&T then one is paying for the 10% tonic at the full gin cost. But one needs more to have the same effect. Same with E-fuels, you need more volume to give the same outcome (in this case MPG). I say do the test and see for yourself - I did on all of my petrol cars and my 3 motorcycles and the outcome was that I’m never fulling up with E10 petrol when the E5 is available. Another consideration is where is the ethanol coming from? Answer, a lot of it from Brazil where they are cutting down the rain forest to grow more maze which is distilled into ethanol then shipped half way around the world in diesel powered ships burning the dirtiest high sulfur fuel. I am ex large global oil company and 10 years ago I spent 18 months in Brazil and I witnessed the destruction of the rain forest and recent reports is that things have only become worse. Richard - a nice balanced video. Our household as two BeV cars and generally my wife and I can decide who will charge their car overnight. I do not believe in PhEVs are a viable solution as they need to be charged each night as the EV only range is close to what most people will do in a day. It has to be a discipline. Your personal case of needing to charge 2+ cars per night shows the challenge but not technically insurmountable with an intelligent multi headed charge point. I've not found the public charging infrastructure wanting - just more pricy than at home. Which comes to my real concern - the government seems silent on getting charging infrastructure for those lacking off street parking. There are companies proposing solutions. BTW charging at home is more than adequate for the vast majority of people. Even with only 7kW charger used for 7 hours overnight with add 49kWh into your battery. At 3miles per kWh, this is 147 miles. Not many people do that daily.
In your list of BEV / PhEV / Mild Hybrid your missed the Range Extended EV - i.e one with a substantial battery capable of doing say 100+ range on battery and a small ICE engine used to top up the battery. Eliminate the complexity of a gear box / clutch and have the ICE engine / generator set running at an optimal speed.

Richard, great idea taking on this subject. Agree EVs do reduce harmful pollutants, but the electricity needs to be green too. There needs to be a scheme of getting the people into these secondhand EVs that have dropped in price. E.G. lower pricing for fast chargers. Scheme to support the battery replacement in older cars, maybe the govement say 10 year min warranties. Local councils need to think about cheaper charging for flat owners and space.
As mentioned before, a standard wallbox is 11kw output here, which is a jump from 7kw, but 3 phase is needed.
Agree EV, trucks, vans and buses doesn't make sense, but maybe hydrogen could play a part for the buses. Germany has 86 hydrogen filling stations. The goverment invested 500m euros into development projects. Toyota ran a fleet of hydrogen cars here in Hannover.
For trucks, on some sections of the Autobahn A1 and A5, there are overhead electric cables for charging trucks on the move (never seen one in action).
German government also give you a refund for having an EV, its about 100 euros a year, you just need to enter the vin number on the net with your address.
Here in Germany, we use litres per 100km, this makes sense.
Regarding tyres, maybe cars need to have torque limits at lower speeds, so the tyres aren't ripped up. Maybe all season tyres would reduce the need for winters & summers (small % in UK I know).
More should be done to promote solar panels in the UK for homes and at lower costs.

EVs last, typically, 7/8 years when the warranty runs out(or 100,000 miles), after that they're basically worth scrap value, ie you don't spend more on a car than it's worth.
ICE cars typically last for 15 years when they reach the same tipping point.
So we're buying more expensive vehicles which last half as long, and this is claimed to be the green alternative.

@@philiplindley7384 you’re talking about depreciation not actual reliability. The value is lower because people don’t fully trust battery powered cars yet, when in actual fact they are far far more reliable than your average ICE car out of warranty. A 10 year Tesla, out of warranty is still £10-20k, so hardly scrap value! I drive both. I wouldnt hesitate in buying a 100k mile Tesla, but I’d be getting a detailed inspection on most 100k ICE cars with the knowledge it’s going to need money spending on it. There are loads of Tesla’s outside of warranty on the roads with perfectly good batteries, plus there are fixable out of warranty, with cells replaceable by specialists rather than having to replace a whole battery

I will not have a smart meter or smart chager which means I will not have an EV or plug-in hybrid. The Net Zero programme being pushed by Miliband the Mad will destroy this country.

I was thinking about buying a small Suzuki car about 2018. I noted its co2 output was 89gms.
Then they decided to "go green " and change all their cars to "mild hybrids ". This involved putting a " Hybrid " badge on the back although it would not drive on electric only and they installed a battery under the passenger's seat.
So now, I assume, because it is heavier, the Co2 output for the very same car is 114 gms ?????????

You might be surprised to hear this from someone that has owned a ZE Renault Twizy for many years. My vehicle and maybe the Citroen Ami are perfect for the majority of sub 4 mile, daily journeys that I undertake. I can charge and garage it at home and we have a petrol car for longer journeys. I believe that apart from those two quads our currently available EVs are NOT the answer and should not be forced upon anyone. The technology is flawed and not properly developed, EVs are too big, too heavy for our roads, expensive and inefficient. I think your short term solution is correct except I am sure that the future for vans, lorries, buses, earthmovers, dumpers, mobile cranes and other heavy plant is hydrogen power NEVER electric. We should be grateful as a nation to Lord Bamford of JCB. The research and development that he has financed and undertaken without any government help, into Hydrogen gas production, storage, transport and the modification of diesel engines to run reliably on this gas, should be applauded. If our useless deaf, government does not wake up, we will have no motor industry left in the UK. Thousands of people in dealership networks and the supply chain will be out of work. European vehicle manufacturers will go to the wall and the whole of Europe will be flooded with poorly made disposable Chinese vehicles that will help destroy the planet even faster.

So to keep costs down, help recycling, help parts availability, be GREEN why don't they...
share standard components, controllers, cpu, displays, motors, battery's etc etc
I know body's are a different shape but batteries could be built from a smaller standard brickette sized battery which is easily replaceable

Britain doesn’t have a CO2 problem, Britain has a problem that the state is sold out and run by WEF globalists. Electric cars do have their place, but we shouldn’t be bullied in to getting one. They shouldn’t be subsidised and tax reliefs should be the same for EV and ICE vehicles.
We only have limited time to spend on this planet and I much rather prefer spending it with my family, rather than sitting at a charger in motorway services for hours.
Small electric city cars for people who do 100-150 miles max per day are perfect. We definitely don’t need silly stupid massive things like Cybertrucks for example.

Speaking to someone who has recently retired from the national grid I was asking him about charging cars and the grid and he said, EVs, data centres and normal growth in power consumption means by 2030 we need a minimum of 50% increase of power generation to keep the grid in balance. You have about a 2% difference between power generation and power usage if it goes much further than that it's out of balance and can collapse. But what you need to know is an over power can be difficult to deal with quickly, but an under power can be dealt with quickly by power cuts to some areas. So if you believe that wind and solar are not going to be consistent and you understand that battery storage is stupid and costly you are probably right, so it's power cuts then.

@Piecenotwar to power the USA for one day would take all the batteries made at the Tesla mega factory for the next 500 years. I quote USA because we don't make batteries. Also colbalt, lithium copper and nickel all make in the mining produce water pollution air pollution scar the landscape and shortens life expectancy and destroys local communitys. Then it's moved to a process plant via diesel power and more water pollution is made. Then it's transported to battery plants using diesel power and then plastic from the petrochemical industry is added to the jellyroll and other plastic components are used including insulated wire. Then the batteries are shipped from China using diesel power around the world and we buy them as clean energy storage. We also buy solar panels from China and as for windmills well apart from the 150 tonnes of concrete foundations and the 100 tonnes of steel in the tower and the 32 tonnes of hi carbon steel gears at the top of the tower and the gearbox filled with 180 LTRs of gear oil thanks petrochemical industry. Other than all of that it's clean energy!!!! Don't make me laugh you have been had by lies and I feel sorry for you
