      I watched this yesterday... again :) I like this movie, maybe because of nostalgia, i was 8 or 9 when i first saw it on TV after all. But i think that best thing in this movie, and it is same thing that makes me revisit my favourite video games of old few times a year- it is atmosphere. I love "Gothic" or "Soul Reaver", or "S.T.A.L.K.E.R", despite of their shortcomings and technical issues because of how they make me feel, how they tell story without characters talking about every detail- things like reliefs on the wall showing vampires becoming gods in "Soul Reaver", yet no character is trying to adress why and what is what, leaving room for imagination and for us to figure it out- and same thing about movies. Shitty visual effects don`t bother me at all. Nobody is bitching about "Clash of the Titans" and plastic monster over there. Noone is moaning about "Bruce" shark with cheeks from "Jaws". Same with low budget movies- i take it how they are, and if they have something good about them, i enjoy them. Screamers told a story without actually going too deep with explenation of every little thing. My favourite moment in the movie is when Hendricksen talks about how war started, how it played out, and how eventually it all came to an end. Jefferson asks question after question, and Hendricksen answers with "I don`t have the answers. You can ask me all questions you want". Just... powerful

      I was just saying yesterday while rewatching the movie that I absolutely love the movie because of the Stalker kind of atmosphere. It gives you the feel of Strugatskij brothers sci fi books where little explanation was provided, had a lot of high tech machinery, had that gloomy feel and the reader had a lot of figuring out to do.

    Screamers is one of those movies with a rich backstory that sadly is told and not seen. A colony is established on a planet with "rare minerals" and when extracting them proves potentially fatal the colonists refuse to work. How do their corporate masters respond? They transport tens of thousands of mercenaries to subjugate the populace and reopen the mine. Four grueling years of war ensue when the colonists - mostly scientists and miners - create a scorched-earth weapon that destroys all movement on the ground -- self-replicating machines that attack in huge numbers. The war on Sirius crashes to a stalemate. But reinforcements never come - for _either_ side.
    During those four years, other mining worlds - inspired by "the Heroes of Sirius" had risen in rebellion and joined the cause. Now a full-scale interstellar war rages and Sirius is of no strategic importance to anyone without the Screamers making *any* sort of mining impossible. Both sides have left their armies to rot. (Which actually makes sense in real life when you learn how *ludicrously expensive* space travel is.) Then word of a truce offer begins to spread...
    Forget the "evolving machines" premise. I want to see *_that_* movie!

      @SaveTheWorldRadio -- It wasn't the millenials. The phrase "Show, don't tell" originated in writing programs covertly funded by the CIA in order to promote abstract modernism in literature and film and push western audiences away from the "heroic realism" style of Soviet agitprop dramas.
      Feel free to look it up yourself. This is widely known in academic circles.
      Personally, I just want to see a "Screamers" prequel one of these days.

    How is that matte paintings seemed to have a certain sense of mystery and wonder almost like a personality of it's own, while CGI doesn't? Even nowadays where CGI is photo realistic and for all intent and purposes supposedly better in every way, something seems to have been lost.
    I can't explain it, even when matte paintings look "worse", they had a certain magic to it.
    Its almost like how one of Drew Struzan's paintings gives a certain life to an image, even if it is less realistic.
    I wish we could have both things.

    • @georgemulford2910
      @georgemulford2910 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I know exactly what you mean. The same applies with models as well. I wonder if its to do with how light reflects of actual physical objects. I doubt its long before CGI can replicate the effect totally. However I presume its unlikely that Hollywood would concerned with retaining the organic magic of matte paintings and models.

    • @Tellin08
      @Tellin08 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Well said. I just rewatched this movie because of Olivia Harper's retrospective on it and the matte paintings just seem to have this "realness" and grittiness to them that cgi still can't replicate. They are really well done.

    • @PsychoholicSlag83
      @PsychoholicSlag83 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      As those effects weren't perfect they added a "surreal" quality to the movies, that's what was lost. On the other hand, good cgi goes unnoticed (that's how you know it's good) and bad cgi looks like a videogame :(.

    • @Tellin08
      @Tellin08 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You point out something that - I literally never noticed - when stating that good cgi does go unnoticed because it is so realistic and ends up being more mechanical and boring to look at. While something from a matte artist naturally feels more crafty and is also surreal as you nicely put it.

    • @thegreywanderer8427
      @thegreywanderer8427 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The magic of the matte paintings comes from the craftsmen putting so much time and dedication to them. A CGI artist creates an effect which only looks worse and worse over time as the technology progresses and the old works become utterly obsolete. But a painting remains the same forever if it's just photocopied and preserved. A monument to the burning light of the human life which created it.

    FINALLY someone remembers this movie!!! I went to see this film with my best friend back in middle school. Even though we were young, we were both deep into film, literature and art. We saw Screamers in one of the last of the small neighborhood theaters that multiplexes put out of business. I was a fan of Peter Weller and thought his performance carried the entire film. The concept of the film intrigued me, but ultimately the execution left more to be desired. When I found out it was based on a Philip K. Dick story, it all made sense- seems like no one is ever able to film any of his short stories without radically altering them, and something always ends up lost in translation. Watching it as an adult, I realize the constraints of the budget and I'm actually impressed at what they accomplished. Maybe I'm not as critical as I was when I was a teen because nowadays everything is a prequel/sequel/reboot. I've tried to discuss this film with other people over the years, but few have ever seen it. :/

    Saw this on home video and loved it. The bad special effects did not bother me. I gave into that as the movie unspooled. This one is great. Tons of imagination. What killed me though, hearing "Can I Come With You" amplified in that creepy and bloody mess hall. This was an honest effort and I feel they delivered.

    Disagree completely about your take of the plot's "issues" in the second half. The screamers operate the way they were programmed, as a guerrilla and infiltration weapon, so sending an army out randomly doesn't make much sense when it already creates the army behind enemy lines. Weller's "God, you're beautiful" line wasn't laughable to me; it was the remark of a worn-out, war-torn man who suddenly sees the humanity in front of him. The Davids coming out Hendricksson's base was freaky as hell, because of the build-up to it and what it meant., and Jessica turning out to be a screamer surprised the heck out of me, simply because the movie already seemed to identify Becker as the Series 2 and the Davids were similar to one another. What I loved about the movie was that it was a war movie, not an action piece, and it took it from the soldier's perspective, in which the weapons have turned on them and they have become absolutely expendable. The bad special effects--especially several of the opticals--were bad for the time but honestly not unusual for b-movies like this one, so spending so much time criticizing them was a bit odd.

    I was pretty scared of the dark as a kid and the shot where the David screamer's eyes just go white 14:14 and he opens a mouth with razor teeth made me scared for several nights. Even though it's a terrible effect back then it just looked so unnatural and caught me off guard. Also a lot of what draws me in in terms of sci/fi and fantasy is a rich world/setting that I want to know more about and screamers succeeds at being a contained small story set in a large interesting world that makes you wonder what happened? Peter Weller just has a coolness about him!

The problem with the modern world is everyone gets on the internet and wants to nit pick every little thing about every movie and over analyze it. I miss the pre-internet years of movie enjoyment. I was commercial fishing salmon with my dad on a beach with no electricity or running water in Alaska in the summer of 1997. About 14 years old and at some point, we were in some sort of a minimally outfitted rest camp for transitory fishermen that had showers, sleeping quarters, and a cafeteria. I desperately wanted to watch the new Batman film that had come out, but there was only a TV in the cafeteria there and I took a couple of hours and watched this movie since it was on the TV instead. It terrified me at the time. I saw it again a few years later in college, and I just found a torrent of it again here now, 23 years later. The movie always stuck with me. Something about the mood. The lead actor does good work. As a 14-year old, I didn’t know who Philip K. Dick was, but I’ve enjoyed several of his works and several movies based on his work since then; he was a national treasure. Maybe it was something about being up in Alaska that summer, where dusk lasted until 10pm, but the mood of the environments and story have always stuck with me from this film.

    I always liked this movie and I still do. I think the love story works really well being in a desolate crap environment. When you find something nice you probably become really happy for it as it's so very rare. Even for the robot it's a rare event when it's more beneficial not to kill and destroy to survive.
    I also like the heaviness in the end fight. For me it's more about what they tried to convey than the effect itself. It's a cool feeling that she is a heavy, powerful robot that has turned to protect in the otherwise fatal situation. So for me the best part of the movie actually is the ending.
    Good review however Oliver! Thanks for sharing the nostalgia!

    Peter Weller just exuded a kind of nihilistic confidence (if there is such a thing) that seemed perfectly suited for the surreal dangers of the big city in the late '80s/early '90s action and sci-fi movies. He's got that quiet swagger about him (again two things that maybe don't work together conceptually, which makes Peter Weller so unique in that he had it!). Thanks for the review. Revives that feeling of excitement I had as a teen when a lot of these came out (my mom's disapproval probably added to the mystique of "danger" I alluded to, as well).

    A year ago I readed the short story "Second Variety" in which is based this movie, from Phillip K. Dick, really interesting and the movie follow some good details of the plot, the historical context is different because by the 90´s changed completely and thats why they made some changes in the plot and the script.

    Great opening intro! It brought back memories of seeing this movie opening weekend with a bunch of friends. Best thing about the movie was and still is: Peter Weller in his prime. I don't think Duguay has made an overall more entertaining movie than this.

    It has always bothered me that they can travel to alien planets and they can make autonomous self-replicating robots, but for some reason they can't make an IFF system. Making them kill everything with a heartbeat is pure madness, like they were intentionally trying to build a machine to wipe out humanity, and what would prevent the enemy soldiers from hiding their heartbeats?
    Bad special effects don't bother me, but I want the story to make sense.

    I remember seeing Screamers many times on tv as a child, don't think I ever saw the entire thing from start to finsh but I always remember it being scary and a must see movie when it was on.. I just watched it for the 1st time as an adult and while the issues you pointed out are valid I still think its an amazing movie with great pacing and all along I was engrossed with the world they were in and wanted to know more about it. I feel like the 3rd act should have taking them underground to where the screamers were made.... with them having to destroy it.

    Wait... Nobody else saw the ending I've always seen? The way I aways took it was, Joseph leaves the planet and Joseph stays on the planet...cus there's more than one Joseph. He's the final, undiscovered screamer. He's such a perfect model that he not only doesn't know he's a screamer, but he actually plans to warn people about screamers that seem human, so nobody will ever think he IS one...until it's too late. He's basically the ultimate model, designed to become the John Conner of their world, so he gains the ultimate trust and the perfect infiltration.

    I saw Screamers as a rental way back when and I liked it a lot. I just tried to focus on what they tried to accomplish instead of the shortcomings, like the CGI. There wasn't any better available at the time. You mentioned that Total Recall made a profit, however the effects in that film were truly cringeworthy. And I agree that Peter Weller carried off his role nicely. I felt that the hidden machines provided lots of suspense and jump-scares. The fact they could replicate themselves added to the general sense of doom.

    I really enjoyed this movie on VHS when I was around 10. It was pretty liked locally in Quebec because of Roy Dupuis, a local "star" (always has been a shitty actor though).
    Didn't know about the Montreal Olympic Stadium! I'm from Montreal and I can say that it was a great idea for a shooting location! Its weird futuristic look, its many immense corridors & underground passages, all concrete, give a very unsettling feel to the structure when paired with the weird angles of the walls & tower!
    A 70's construction with which Montrealers have a strong love/hate relationship. It still sticks out like a sore thumb, but since its recent renovation, adding tons of glass at impossible angles & making the whole thing more angular, it still looks futuristic, though a little less alien: it's like the original design has been updated and fused with a modern glass skyscraper.

    Alot of the time we talk about why Hollywood wastes time making reboots of movies that were perfectly good or even exceptional. I think Screamers fits perfectly into that category that deserves a another shot. It has some good themes of the futility of war, the hubris of man, and the ability for machines to learn to become something more.

    I would like the sequel to feature the bear, who upon landing immediately starts building a robot army.
    Likewise the comedic route would have him complete odd jobs to save up money for a factory.
