  • The title of this episode is a bit odd, considering no brains were involved in its creation.

The most amazing thing about this episode is how every one of the actors and actresses were able to say their lines with straight faces. That's some serious professionalism right there.

"It will kill my medical officer..." This always gets me. It is a common theme in Stargate. Some incredible device of knowledge downloads information into a brain; maybe the character goes a bit off the rails, but somehow that knowledge is taken out or fades away on its own. Then in a future episode, when they run into the technology again, it's "it almost killed" so and so...
It pisses me off because it is a cop put. It had never been established that the knowledge device would have killed anyone.

  • @charlesvan13

A funny thing about this episode is that it's the first time (see 7:00) that they back project the view screen rather than adding it in post production. So they have the actors pace back and forth in front of it constantly, just because they can.

  • @squamish4244

As remarkably awful as this episode is, what's even more remarkable is that:
    1) Someone is critically - if hilariously - reviewing an episode of a tv series that aired *50 years ago*
    2) Many people of all ages are familiar with the tv series and the specific episode.
I can't think of ANY other tv show from prior to the 1990s that either of those things are true about, except perhaps Dr. Who and The Twilight Zone to some extent. Even reviews aimed at older audiences only feature a few shows from the 1980s at the earliest.

    • @SouthwesternEagle
      @SouthwesternEagle 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

valar You're forgetting shows like The Cosby Show (1984), Full House (1987), Star Trek TNG (1987), Scooby Doo (1969), The Flintstones (1961), Tom & Jerry (1940), The Jetsons (1962), and Fat Albert (1972).

      SouthwesternEagle
"A few shows from the 1980s at the earliest."
One of those is another Star Trek, big surprise!
Even then, most people who watched those shows, younger or older, aren't going to remember much in the way of specifics.
That leaves the cartoons. I missed those. Absolutely children's cartoons have a much greater longevity. But most people aren't going to remember the plots unless it's Looney Toons, and they sure aren't going to be reviewing the episodes.

Very funny review! I grew up watching ST: TOS, and as a kid took all of these episodes very seriously, but later I got into comedy and was able to see how much silliness was in the show, as well as most other TV science fiction of that era. Great fodder for spoofing and mockery now, but the best thing about the OS was the characters and the futuristic tech like warp drives, transporters, and the Enterprise herself. Always fun to watch Shatner in fist fights, too, because of the obvious stuntman inserts when they pull back to a wide master shot of the melee. The plots are so simple, a child could write them!

Well this is my fave episode & here's why. I am behind the scenes watching the part where McCoy tries out Spock's finger. Ahem. Original Trekkie here, uber-fan who got invited to Paramount as thanks for helping get TOS renewed after season 2. They didn't name a character after me (like "Geordy LaForge") but Roddenberry & Barrett took me to lunch at the Brown Derby, I watched some scenes being shot, was taken on a personal tour of the studio, met all the special FX guys & got to schmooz with the actors at the wrap party. They offered me a job, but when I saw what was happening with season 3 I decided against that...not apologizing.

@16.42, I think Kira was a TV critic and punished Shatner for overacting. The thing on Spock's head wasn't for controlling his body it just made that cool noise when McCoy pushed the button. Other buttons made other noises such as farts, kazoo and burps.
These scenes were cut because they thought it would make the episode seem silly.

In James Blish's short story adaptation of this episode (he did all of them, published as a series of paperbacks in the 70's) after the surgery Spock looks at Bones and smiles. After everyone's reaction to this, he goes back to stone-faced and says "I was endeavoring to sneeze", thus getting in a good dig at McCoy's surgical skills.

Re: Spock directing his own brain surgery. There is a Russian sci-fi book, where one of the characters has a major surgery (not brain surgery, mind you), and insists on not being sedated... because at the same time she is also performing surgery on somebody else. Interestingly, it DOES make sense in context.

@@Gulamaja It's not translated. If you can read Russian, it's called "Космобиолухи" (hard to translate, as it's a play of words, but most commonly it's referred to as "Space biologoofists"), or rather one of the sequels. The character in question is a cyborg, naturally having a much greater pain tolerance, and she is also the best hacker in the team. Another cyborg is attacked by a virus, and she is connected to him remotely and is fighting the virus. She is also physically injured, and doctors need to operate quickly, but she can't disconnect, otherwise the virus would kill the other guy.

    From The Star Trek Compendium:
"While 'Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein' was in production at Universal Pictures in 1948, its title was 'The Brain of Frankenstein'. When viewed in context with the remainder of Star Trek, 'Spock's Brain' is almost as funny even without the presence of Abbott and Costello...
In 'The Menagerie', Dr. McCoy confirms that medical science in [this] era has learned to tie into all bodily organs EXCEPT the brain. It therefore seems highly unlikely that, while McCoy COULD sustain life within Spock's brainless body in sick bay, he could animate it and still keep it alive OUTSIDE the confines of the ship...
When Spock's voice is heard over Kirk's communicator, it is not explained how the Vulcan's brain manages to synthesize Spock's voice although body and mind have been separated."

It´s about time... for this comment... being seven years late, that is.
*P.S.:* Season three episodes of ST:TOS were, _uh,_ different because Roddenberry left the position of day-to-day showrunner and script editor, because that was the only bargaining power he had in a dispute with NBC... and he lost.
*P.P.S.:* The intention of the author of this episode, Cronin/Coon, was that this episode be _high camp._ Or so he purported.

Wait a minute, didn't they recycle part of this plot for the 3rd ST film THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK, in which his conscience (knowledge and memories included) was transferred to Bones' mind from THE WRATH OF KAHN but the body was left on the Genesis planet and had to be retrieved so that Spock could be resurrected in his entirety? Man, the original films were recycling the original series' plots long before J.J. Abrams recycled the plots of the first six films!

While this episode may be an embarrassment to The Original Series, bullshit like Sub Rosa & tens of Voyager episodes are an embarrassment to Star Trek in its entirety

And that isn't as stupid as having a whole episode of Worf taking a bath?

The Enterprise Incident would have been a great - and better - season opener

I *FUCKING* love spocks brain. Best episode of TOS.

Spock's Brain was taken by Nancy Sinatra look-a-likes. This episode was spoofed on The Wonder Years(1988-1993).

IMHO, the worst episode is "Turnabout Intruder". At least "Spock's Brain" had a so bad it's good aspect to it. "Turnabout Intruder" was just bad. Shatner's doubly hammy acting as Janet Lester in Kirk's body almost reached so bad it's good status, but didn't quite, it was just really bad. The story was absurd.

The guest actress in Turnabout Intruder played Kirk better than Shatner did. They could have continued the series with her starring as Jane Tiberia Kirk…

I can think of worse episodes not from Season 3. But, The Enterprise Incident probably would've been a much better choice to lead off the season with.

In our humored critique of this episode, I was impressed by it. Gene Roddenberry knew some secrets we will learn later, Star Trek was his humored attempt to share these secrets with us. I will reveal to you that there are other planets with humanoid life forms besides earth, And some of these planets, as in this episode, contain only female forms and some only male forms. Most, more advanced than us. One hundred years ago, if one spoke of the television and radio and cars, one would be deemed insane or accused of wizardry. Today, these are mainstream. Do not let ignorance keep you asleep.

Maybe you should start doing reviews of bad TV show episodes inbetween your movie reviews. Not just shows but maybe ones like Pokemon (There's plenty of bad episodes to pick from), The Simpsons, Doctor Who (The Twin Dilemma perhaps), ect.

This episode was nothing compared to the Space Hippies in "The Way To Eden". That was the WORST!!

Great work. I would love to see more Star Trek related stuff on this channel. Maybe more tv reviews in general, too.

It’s not the worst episode in the series. That falls to “And the Children Shall Lead”. Horrible episode, with a trial lawyer (Melvin Belli) playing the villain. This episode was a clunker but that’s it.
