- Today on the BEST HORROR MOVIE YOU NEVER SAW we take on Christian Duguay's sci-fi horror adaptation of Philip K. Dick's short story "The Second Variety": SCREAMERS (1995).
The film stars Peter Weller (yes RoboCop himself), Quebec star Roy Dupuis (the flick was shot in Montreal, Canada) and Scream Queen Jennifer Rubin (Nightmare on Elm Street 3, Bad Dreams). It was written by ALIEN scribe Dan O'Bannon and Miguel Tejada-Flores who penned Revenge of the Nerds. Here's the synopsis:
"A military commander stationed off planet during an interplanetary war travels through the devastated landscape to negotiate a peace treaty, but discovers that the primitive robots they built to kill enemy combatants have gained sentience."

It's rare, but I truly appreciate a film that doesn't glamorize war, especially these days.

I was only 9 when the movie was on TV.
I was sitting in living room, playing with my toys, a few feet away from the TV.
Then suddenly my mom tells me to check what's on TV.
I turn around and see that kid robot thingy show it's real face.
I had a mild stroke that night.

Resident evil 1 movie with more robots and less zombies and more outside world scenes instead of only in buildings
This movie is simply amazing. Too bad the sequels were not worth mention but this movie left me want more. More of the same world with the same characters. It hit the right notes for me. I don't remember how old I was when I first saw it but adore it to this day. The atmosphere is really strong with this one.
By the way, I like Scanner Cop 1 and 2 more than Scanners.
Has the same immersive atmosphere and unique 90s film look that resident evil 1 does

Saw this movie when I had a god awful case of the flue in middle school for YEARS! I thought I had hallucinated having seen it because I couldn't find it anywhere.
I got stuck in a flue in middle school once. I was trying to retrieve my bong. They had to get the groundsman "Gus" to retrieve me with a step ladder.

Watching it again. There's so much small world building built in and I'm picking up plenty of the early hints of who's a screamer.
I’ve been looking for reviews on this movie for decades lol. I almost convinced myself this movie didn’t exist when I knew I saw it when I was ten haha the ending still disturbs me. I’ve had a teddy bear just like the one in the movie when I was a kid xD
Screamers is such an odd movie because it constantly moves between feeling incredibly well made and believable, to being cheap and corny. I mean take the scene at 1:08, i remember that scene vividly to this day because of the pacing, lines and the incredible backdrop; I grew up in an area that is absolutely dominated by industrial buildings, and that looks exactly how i'd imagine a mining city would look in the future.
Its like they ran out of budget half way into the movie
This movie's trailer scared me and my scout troop back in 1995, so much that we referred to it constantly at a luge campout that year. I didn't end up seeing though until 5 or 6 years later.

I just got this movie. Saw it years back on VHS. Still awesome horror. I figured out most of the plot 27 minutes in. The big clue was the 2x micro chips.

I watched the movie at the cinema and the video cannot compare to how vivid the graphics were, it was awesome. Especially the start outside the planet and the atmosphere inside the tower where they were trying to meet for a peace agreement. Many people criticised the motion capture of the skeletoids but it gives them a strange and interesting character. All the cast looked great and the guy who say's 'I am my mothered fkng self, alone', great script.

It features his daughter and is about Screamer/human hybrids. Don't remember much because it was boring but the way the first film ended, You can figure out how he dies.

Saw it when it came out. I was 10 and we had a movie channel. It was kinda scary, but i saw worse at that age.
It is bombastic!
Growing up I was the only one out of the bunch of my friends who watched horror movies to have even heard of let alone watch this movie.
Saw Screamers at the Theater was pretty good flick
Clicked as soon as I saw the actress in the thumbnail. So I could Google her nude in images. What a piece.
I like this movie, but upon rewatching it yesterday, much is due to nostalgia, it certainly has its flaws.
One thing that bugs me is when Hendricksson is holding back in the NEB HQ to "scan" the CPUs taken from Screamers...now WHY would the NEB have facilities to scan such things and more importantly HOW/WHY would the NEB system be able to answer his query "Identify type 2"... Also the holographic communication with Earth...I get it, its the 90s, but that's just silly.
And the Becker character...the Screamers have certainly evolved...into having massive egos. WHY does he go around spouting Shakespeare and other non-sense when Hendricksson is scrambling for a weapon to kill him? Machines ought to be more effective and not act like Bond villains.
It is a bleddy good film saw it the other day.

This movie is a Monster Mystery kinda like The Thing, but less good.
Still, scrimping off the best movie ever and setting it on (let's face it) Dune isn't the _worst_ idea.
And a lot like Reign of Fire, the monsters and actors compensate for the mediocre script.

Part 2 definitely did. It said weller's ship blew up entering earth atmosphere. They called it suicide but henriksen later says "if he blew it up there were screamers onboard"

Yeah...maybe you can find it on blu ray and dvd but not easily. The dvd is long out of print. I did manage to score one for 11 bucks or so (if I remember right).
I just watched both films recently. They are kinda grim and fucked up. Nobody really makes it out alive. I mean, technically but not really if you follow the off screen story to it's logical conclusion
