Spent hours using the product to take the squeaks out of my 1920's stairs. I used both the no squeak "joists only " and regular screws. I think I could have just used the regular ones but had so many squeaks I ended using nearly all the nails. I watched the no squeaks video but recommend you also view the "Ask this old house" episode on squeaky stairs. I had squeaks on two of the stairs I couldn't resolve until I watched their vid to learn I had to put the screws in at an angle into the end skirts. My stairs are a lot quieter so don't think you can only use the screws as shown in the instructions and video. Now I have to tackle the squeaky floors.
So I am renting a home single level that was built in 1914..... I have major squeaks from mostly the dining area and want to use this ..... would I have to do the whole floor or can I just hit it from where the noises are coming from ?
if the squeak is real close to a wall pull off the shoe molding and shim the 2x4's under the baseboard, i've had this problem a few times. Again if the squek is close to a wall. if basement is unfinished or there is a crawl space try bracing the joists from the bottom. Do not screw directly to a solid piece of hardwood floor without a pilot hole.
I'm religious about my enjoyment of silence and I have been plagued by the squeaks in our steps and floors for years. This product is a Godsend. I screw it into joists by using a strong magnet to find the joists and even if there isn't one around it still helps.
The head hits the top of the fixture, the screw wants to keep going down although the fixture won't allow the head to go any further causing the screw to snap at the score.
I don't know it's been mentioned before, but if you lay a piece of wide blue painters tape down before you do anything it helps protect your floor during the drilling and more important, you can fill your hole with wood dough and then pull up the tape and only the hole has dough in it. NO MESS!! Just did it and it worked great

Patrick, I had a new bathroom installed. Since completed, the floor squeaks at the door. There is grouted tile laid on a 3/4" subfloor with 1/8" grout between the tiles. If I drill at a grout seam, then fill the holes made with new grout, will the screws mark the tiles leaving marks that the grout won't cover? I guess my question is "Are #8 screws actually 1/8" in diameter?"
I used this product on carpeted floors at my last house and am purchasing a beautiful old house with VERY squeaky floors that could use a refinish. I know just the trick to fix them! 🍻
Yeah I figured that out. I grabbed mine and didn't really help much. However, This Old House guided me to knowing that most joists are spread 16 inches apart from each other. All I had to do was find the first joist and work my way down.
@@lauratucholski Yeah, that can be a good guide, but doesn't account for blocking etc. Just grab a magnet and you will find all existing nails and also avoid them.
Do these limit the life span of your floor? If you have 0.75" hardwood floors but these only go 0.2" below the surface, it limits how many times you can sand it down to refinish it. Once a sander meets the end of these screws, it's game over. Unlike a finishing nail, there's no removing these.
I don't understand why you can't allow the screw to break automatically using the fixture for thinner wood? I have a 1/4" floor on top a 3/4" subfloor so not sure which method I would use?
My guess would be the method of not drilling all the way. You want to keep everything together so there's nothing rubbing against the screw because it didn't hold. So by drilling most of the way down, you keep the subfloor in the joist, and by stopping a little early you keep the floor in the subfloor.
There must be enough threads caught in the top layer to stop the squeaks. The tool controls the depth of the screw for thicker flooring, that's why you can't use the tool in thin flooring.
Sorry you made this comment that long ago with no helpful replies. Not that it's any use now - but you don't NEED to find the joists, however you may want to depending on where the squeaks are coming from. If parts of the original floor construction are over 50 years old, odds are it IS the joists that are contributing to the squeaking. As for where to place the screws, it again depends on if it's coming from the joist or the floor boards themselves. Look for loose or creaky boards and start there, exactly where the sound originates from. If that doesn't work, try screwing into the joints in that area as well.
I used this tool over the weekend. Had 1 issue. 50% of the time, as I drove the screw into the jig (into hardwood floor), the screw to hit the jig and kept spinning.... didn't break off as noted in the video. Any comments / explanation?
What are we supposed to do when the screw shears off an eighth of an inch above the hardwood. I have sunk 8 screws and two of them have done this so far.
Going to be tough. Best solution without a lot of work is to cut it off flush with a diamond saw on a 4" grinder. This will still leave the screw end visible. Other possibility is to use a Spot Weld Drill Bit (like for cars) without the center drill bit. Chuck the outside part in a drill and cut out a small area around the screw 1/4 deep. Dig out the wood with a chisel. Remove with vise grip. Patch with a quality hardening wood filler not crayon type, or use a wood plug . You probably have dry wood. Rub wax or paraffin on each screw before driving so it doesn't break early. This suggestion is not for prefinished flooring or any pergo laminate style floors.
@@firesurfer update. Getting the floors re finished now. After sinking a dozen screws there is minimal gains. These are the original 1923 wood floors, with the diagonal wood sub floor beneath. Nothing against this product of course. It was great and easy to use. Maybe my floors are just too old
@@mattr.9886 A typical floor can easily use 2-4 dozen screws or more. Properly placed. Finding the joists underneath is critical. Then making a map on the floor with string and small nails so you can exactly place the screws. There are demonstrations on yt about this.
Tried the scored srews, don,t recommend using them, to much effort and may not work. If you know where the joists are just use a hammer, counter sinker punch tool and 2 1/2 inch finishing nails and you,ll have the same amount of luck eliminating squeaks. And when hammering the nails, get your fingers OUT OF THE WAY.
This looks pretty great but I'm just thinking about 5 or 10 years down the line, if I wanted to remove a bored or change a broken stair, how am I going to do that with no means of removing the screw?
not only that, a few of these broke off before i got them into the floor deep enough, thankfully my floor was unfinished so i was able to send them down. i've been in my house for 5 years now and all the squeaking is back and then some.
+Micah Nova You probably know by now but they give you a long bit that is only threaded about an inch so you can feel it hit the joist plus it won't push the driver back out if you didn't hit it. This thing really works though.

I bought this kit and now I am in a very awkward position. The screw wouldn’t snap and wouldn’t come out either. The screw together with the fixture now are stuck on my floor.
grab the fixture with locking pliers and lock onto it. Then lift up on the pliers as you reverse the drill. This will back the screw out. Then use the higher part of the fixture and drive the screw down as far as the driver and fixture will allow. With the pliers grab onto the screw and rock it back and forth snapping it off.
did not work for us, lots of them wouldn't break off, and did not stop squeaks, so we had to buy finishing screws and counter sink them into the floor in many many places, now we just will cover it with wall to wall carpet. the floor is a mess now. I hate hardwood. too noisy and cold.
If you make your pilot hole smaller the screw will snap off correctly. The wood varies in density, if you make your pilot hole smaller the screw will snap as it should.
@@courtneyoberry4410 I tried a smaller drill bit and it still didn't work. I tried every way you can think of and it still didn't work. Also did not reduce the squeak at all.
+Marooda You're exactly right. They used to be metal and the new cheaper plastic ones don't work so anyone using this thing make sure you have good vice grips to snap it off.
this is a terrible product and it doesn't work long term, i used it back in 2011 when i bought my house, it helped with some spots, left bunch of small hose all over the place, couple broke off before they got into the floor deep enough (i have very hard oak floor). Most importantly, it's 2016 and all the squeaking came back, and it's much worse now.
Houthor Van right he didn’t tell you how to find the juice first before you drill a lot of wholes that miss, smh that was terrible instructions, Joyce are set 16 inches apart so after you find the first one using a electric Joyce finder you can make your mark every 16 inches apart, no more misses
Here is what I would do, and will do if the screw will not break off properly. Get a piece of paper, put it on the ground next to your offending screw. Next take a hack saw blade, move said blade back and forth keeping it on the paper as much a possible to prevent scratching up your floor. Take puch tap the screw down to counter sink. Drink beer, your done. Please deposit man card on table on the way out for not being able to figure this out for yourself.
Pre-drilling refers to drilling a hole smaller than the diameter of the threads, close to the diameter of the solid body of a screw. The idea is you aren’t expanding the wood to the size of the screw, risking a split. In this application, the flooring is tied to the sub-floor/joist in a tension not shear manner. The threads pull the floor tight to the sub-floor/joist.
Used these to get rid squeeks in my floors. I find the gadgets that come with this useless, they only make things more difficult. Also found it much quicker to no predrill the holes. You have to use thousands of these to get good results.

What a great idea! Not really pulling it down tight, more holding floor ridged on the screw thread.
When the screw head snaps off the screw that is remaining in the wood is set 1/4 inch down. This allows you to refinish the floor.

Spent hours using the product to take the squeaks out of my 1920's stairs. I used both the no squeak "joists only " and regular screws. I think I could have just used the regular ones but had so many squeaks I ended using nearly all the nails. I watched the no squeaks video but recommend you also view the "Ask this old house" episode on squeaky stairs. I had squeaks on two of the stairs I couldn't resolve until I watched their vid to learn I had to put the screws in at an angle into the end skirts. My stairs are a lot quieter so don't think you can only use the screws as shown in the instructions and video. Now I have to tackle the squeaky floors.

Stairs are different pull a tread out and look at the frame of the staircase. If you put screws just anywhere they're most likely just floating.
So I am renting a home single level that was built in 1914..... I have major squeaks from mostly the dining area and want to use this ..... would I have to do the whole floor or can I just hit it from where the noises are coming from ?
if the squeak is real close to a wall pull off the shoe molding and shim the 2x4's under the baseboard, i've had this problem a few times. Again if the squek is close to a wall. if basement is unfinished or there is a crawl space try bracing the joists from the bottom. Do not screw directly to a solid piece of hardwood floor without a pilot hole.
I'm religious about my enjoyment of silence and I have been plagued by the squeaks in our steps and floors for years. This product is a Godsend. I screw it into joists by using a strong magnet to find the joists and even if there isn't one around it still helps.

The head hits the top of the fixture, the screw wants to keep going down although the fixture won't allow the head to go any further causing the screw to snap at the score.
I don't know it's been mentioned before, but if you lay a piece of wide blue painters tape down before you do anything it helps protect your floor during the drilling and more important, you can fill your hole with wood dough and then pull up the tape and only the hole has dough in it. NO MESS!! Just did it and it worked great

What's the size you drilling with and how deep needs to be drilled, 3 inches or 2 ?
Patrick, I had a new bathroom installed. Since completed, the floor squeaks at the door. There is grouted tile laid on a 3/4" subfloor with 1/8" grout between the tiles. If I drill at a grout seam, then fill the holes made with new grout, will the screws mark the tiles leaving marks that the grout won't cover? I guess my question is "Are #8 screws actually 1/8" in diameter?"

Yeah I figured that out. I grabbed mine and didn't really help much. However, This Old House guided me to knowing that most joists are spread 16 inches apart from each other. All I had to do was find the first joist and work my way down.
@@lauratucholski Yeah, that can be a good guide, but doesn't account for blocking etc. Just grab a magnet and you will find all existing nails and also avoid them.

Can I use this method on LVP flooring?
Do these limit the life span of your floor? If you have 0.75" hardwood floors but these only go 0.2" below the surface, it limits how many times you can sand it down to refinish it. Once a sander meets the end of these screws, it's game over. Unlike a finishing nail, there's no removing these.
Well, they could be removed with a screw extractor or just drilling them out but I agree that would be a pita! and would probably ruin the sandpaper.

I don't understand why you can't allow the screw to break automatically using the fixture for thinner wood? I have a 1/4" floor on top a 3/4" subfloor so not sure which method I would use?
My guess would be the method of not drilling all the way. You want to keep everything together so there's nothing rubbing against the screw because it didn't hold. So by drilling most of the way down, you keep the subfloor in the joist, and by stopping a little early you keep the floor in the subfloor.
I did it and it left a pretty noticeable dent in the wood from the drill and the fixture tightening
There must be enough threads caught in the top layer to stop the squeaks. The tool controls the depth of the screw for thicker flooring, that's why you can't use the tool in thin flooring.

Sorry you made this comment that long ago with no helpful replies. Not that it's any use now - but you don't NEED to find the joists, however you may want to depending on where the squeaks are coming from. If parts of the original floor construction are over 50 years old, odds are it IS the joists that are contributing to the squeaking. As for where to place the screws, it again depends on if it's coming from the joist or the floor boards themselves. Look for loose or creaky boards and start there, exactly where the sound originates from. If that doesn't work, try screwing into the joints in that area as well.

I used this tool over the weekend. Had 1 issue. 50% of the time, as I drove the screw into the jig (into hardwood floor), the screw to hit the jig and kept spinning.... didn't break off as noted in the video. Any comments / explanation?

What are we supposed to do when the screw shears off an eighth of an inch above the hardwood. I have sunk 8 screws and two of them have done this so far.

Going to be tough. Best solution without a lot of work is to cut it off flush with a diamond saw on a 4" grinder. This will still leave the screw end visible. Other possibility is to use a Spot Weld Drill Bit (like for cars) without the center drill bit. Chuck the outside part in a drill and cut out a small area around the screw 1/4 deep. Dig out the wood with a chisel. Remove with vise grip. Patch with a quality hardening wood filler not crayon type, or use a wood plug . You probably have dry wood. Rub wax or paraffin on each screw before driving so it doesn't break early.
This suggestion is not for prefinished flooring or any pergo laminate style floors.

@@firesurfer update. Getting the floors re finished now. After sinking a dozen screws there is minimal gains. These are the original 1923 wood floors, with the diagonal wood sub floor beneath. Nothing against this product of course. It was great and easy to use. Maybe my floors are just too old
@@mattr.9886 A typical floor can easily use 2-4 dozen screws or more. Properly placed. Finding the joists underneath is critical. Then making a map on the floor with string and small nails so you can exactly place the screws. There are demonstrations on yt about this.

Tried the scored srews, don,t recommend using them, to much effort and may not work. If you know where the joists are just use a hammer, counter sinker punch tool and 2 1/2 inch finishing nails and you,ll have the same amount of luck eliminating squeaks. And when hammering the nails, get your fingers OUT OF THE WAY.
If you use a smaller bit, to pre-drill, the screw grip will increase to the point the screw will break perfect every time.
This looks pretty great but I'm just thinking about 5 or 10 years down the line, if I wanted to remove a bored or change a broken stair, how am I going to do that with no means of removing the screw?
not only that, a few of these broke off before i got them into the floor deep enough, thankfully my floor was unfinished so i was able to send them down. i've been in my house for 5 years now and all the squeaking is back and then some.

I bought this kit and now I am in a very awkward position. The screw wouldn’t snap and wouldn’t come out either. The screw together with the fixture now are stuck on my floor.
grab the fixture with locking pliers and lock onto it. Then lift up on the pliers as you reverse the drill. This will back the screw out. Then use the higher part of the fixture and drive the screw down as far as the driver and fixture will allow. With the pliers grab onto the screw and rock it back and forth snapping it off.

did not work for us, lots of them wouldn't break off, and did not stop squeaks, so we had to buy finishing screws and counter sink them into the floor in many many places, now we just will cover it with wall to wall carpet. the floor is a mess now. I hate hardwood. too noisy and cold.

I used it on Laminated wood floor and it worked.
I tried this with 10 different screws and it did not work at all. The screws did not snap off and it did not fix the squeaking floors.
If you make your pilot hole smaller the screw will snap off correctly. The wood varies in density, if you make your pilot hole smaller the screw will snap as it should.
@@courtneyoberry4410 I tried a smaller drill bit and it still didn't work. I tried every way you can think of and it still didn't work. Also did not reduce the squeak at all.

+Marooda You're exactly right. They used to be metal and the new cheaper plastic ones don't work so anyone using this thing make sure you have good vice grips to snap it off.

this is a terrible product and it doesn't work long term, i used it back in 2011 when i bought my house, it helped with some spots, left bunch of small hose all over the place, couple broke off before they got into the floor deep enough (i have very hard oak floor). Most importantly, it's 2016 and all the squeaking came back, and it's much worse now.

Use parrafin or wax on the screws before driving. You can also predrill, but you must be careful about not using too big a drill bit.

Houthor Van right he didn’t tell you how to find the juice first before you drill a lot of wholes that miss, smh that was terrible instructions, Joyce are set 16 inches apart so after you find the first one using a electric Joyce finder you can make your mark every 16 inches apart, no more misses

I bet whoever specified 1/5 inch, converted from metric and don't understand it's not a commonly used fraction. About 3/16 sounds right.
Here is what I would do, and will do if the screw will not break off properly. Get a piece of paper, put it on the ground next to your offending screw. Next take a hack saw blade, move said blade back and forth keeping it on the paper as much a possible to prevent scratching up your floor. Take puch tap the screw down to counter sink. Drink beer, your done. Please deposit man card on table on the way out for not being able to figure this out for yourself.

Pre drill? what are you talking about? You are using a drill and are drilling.
Pre-drilling refers to drilling a hole smaller than the diameter of the threads, close to the diameter of the solid body of a screw. The idea is you aren’t expanding the wood to the size of the screw, risking a split. In this application, the flooring is tied to the sub-floor/joist in a tension not shear manner. The threads pull the floor tight to the sub-floor/joist.

Used these to get rid squeeks in my floors. I find the gadgets that come with this useless, they only make things more difficult. Also found it much quicker to no predrill the holes. You have to use thousands of these to get good results.
That piece of junk STINKS! It didn't work! Now I have 3 holes in my beautiful hardwood floors and a TON of holes at work. I HATE THIS PRODUCT!
