Curious does the frame need to be flush with the stud on the interior wall or the exterior wall?

It’s your preference. Frame is 4.5 in wide. A typical 2x4 wood stud wall with 5/8 in. Drywall on each side measures 4-3/4 in., so if you split it it’s an 1/8 in on each side of the frame. Or like you said you can hold it to the exterior or interior, but you’d only be looking at a 1/4 in. Of exposed wall. I typically hold it to the exterior.

@@DoorClosersUSA thank you! I plan on holding to the exterior wall and flush the siding with trim. That way the 1/2” drywall on the interior will flush with the frame and then I can add a casing for looks
