You may be able to remove screws and slide out from the mortise hole. If not, you may need to remove door, and remove lock body from bottom of door.

It’s your preference. Frame is 4.5 in wide. A typical 2x4 wood stud wall with 5/8 in. Drywall on each side measures 4-3/4 in., so if you split it it’s an 1/8 in on each side of the frame. Or like you said you can hold it to the exterior or interior, but you’d only be looking at a 1/4 in. Of exposed wall. I typically hold it to the exterior.

@@DoorClosersUSA thank you! I plan on holding to the exterior wall and flush the siding with trim. That way the 1/2” drywall on the interior will flush with the frame and then I can add a casing for looks
