The idea that in complete darkness he decided to leave his first location to find a bigger air pocket is mind blowing. Probably one of the most corageous things I've ever heard
I didn’t even think about the pitch darkness. That makes everything a thousand times more terrifying and desolate.

Unsaid in this video is the fact that Okene, though terrified due to his ordeal, overcame said fear and became a certified commercial diver. The best part? The diver who rescued him was the one who handed him his diploma. To have the courage to even go back to such waters...what a brave man.
That's the second-best part. The best best part is that he works for the same company and crew that saved him.

Just want to give everyone an update on Harrison! He recently just completed his commercial diving training at Jacks Dive Chest.
Best bit - he was given his certs from Nico Van Heerden, the diver who rescued him.
Wow thats awesome
He’s a brave man because the only water I’d ever go to is the shower or hot tub. I think it’d take a long time & psychology counseling just to get in a swimming pool.

Update on Harrison: he took a job in 2015 with the same company that saved him. He now dives commercially and may one day have the opportunity to go on a rescue mission, like the one that saved him.
I'm not gonna lie; I probably would've just sat there and cried constantly. I've had nightmares less horrid than this.

Not many people are talking about how brave those divers were. That was a near impossible recovery mission. Nico is a brave man.

I think it's due to grief. They're most likely severely upset and depressed about what happened to their family while Harrison just up and got lucky. It's a "Why Me!" thing (When a tragedy happens to you and it feels like you're the only person suffering in the world at that moment).

I saw a documentary about this before with the guy speaking on it, but I STILL cant get over how he survived and his courage to survive.

TO EVERYONE WHO WANTS TO KNOW: There is a video if Harrison's rescue on youtube! You can see his hand reach out and grab the diver's hand. The diver has an instructor talking him through the whole thing. I highly reccoment watching it !

I had the same thought but it's basically impossible. The whole story explains how this guy survived but basically he was a large dude that could go without food/ water for extended time periods. He was also in the largest cabin with the most air.
The boat landed in silt, which means it was rapidly sinking into the sand with every hour, kicking up sand which would obscure the divers' visibility. The further it sinks, the quicker it starts to break apart, and no diver could survive a heavy sheet of hull metal landing on top of them. Any survivor would die from carbon monoxide poisoning of the air pocket or from a lack of fresh water within a week or less.

In an interview he describes being able to hear his colleagues shouting and talking to each other as they were trapped in various other small air bubbles throughout the ship. One by one he heard them gargle and go silent over the course of those 3 days......

He freed himself from the nightmares when he chose to become a diver about 3 years after his rescue. THAT was courageous. He now works as a salvage and recovery diver with the same company that saved him. He has a TH-cam channel if you need proof.

I'm ex Navy and was taught that, in this situation, when you exhale do so under water...the water absorbs more of the CO2 that way allowing your oxygen to last longer.

I wonder how many people have survived crazy things only to not be rescued soon enough. Reminds me of a family friend who survived treading water for almost 24h. He said seeing the helicopter and plane turn back the last time before the night was the worst thing ever. (They came searching again the next day and found him)

Hey infographics, my mother is from Nigeria and yh I live in Nigeria rn. I must say I am absolutely impressed with this documentary, the name pronouncing was not too bad for a foreigner and the story was well described. Amazingly my mother is also from warri Delta state 😂. Well we heard the story and my mom also told me. I was so amazed when I found out that it was a story about Nigeria because I was scrolling normally looking for you wonderful videos to download. My ex used to be a diver, the headgear can also feel very claustrophobic and restrictive and make people panic.

I’m glad he survived. I’ve never heard anything like this in my life. If I were one of the divers, I probably would’ve thought I seen a a ghost and swam away. I just wouldn’t be able to comprehend that someone could be under water alive for three days. That’s amazing!!
