Out of all the survivor stories i've ever seen, this one makes me the most uncomfortable. The idea of being forced to cut off a limb for escape is truly frightening.

To everyone saying that they couldnt amputate their own arm. If you asked this to Aron Ralston befor the accident i think he would say that he couldnt do it aswell.

Besides, his arm was already dead and decomposing, where most people don't know what that's like. I assume it made it feel as if it had already been amputated.

@@jasonwillows5239 if you watch other interviews, he talks about the absolutely insane pain he felt. First he had to snap the bones by brute force, and then cut through multiple nerves that were still very alive. He felt every bit of it. But he knew it was his only chance of surviving.

When you turn into survival mode, when your life is truly threatened and that you fully realise "I am going to die", you wind up being capable of so much more than you thought you would ever be. Primitive instincts take over. It's phenomenal how the brain works.
I don't know man, most people would just give up and wait for help until they die of thirst and starvation.

Chelo First of all, yes it does. If you lose one litre of blood you will probably weight about one kilogram less, before your blood is replenished. But that wasn’t really the point, he is missing a freaking limb, of course he will weight less.

Yeah, that was just BEYOND horrifying, "he discovered that his decomposing limb was PLIABLE!" Then he rigged his gear with his hand and teeth to rappell 60 ft down a cliff- one handed. Savage AF survivor. Amazing.

Still 360kg boulder in a narrow space...no matter how many people were there, no one could do anything about that without special tools.

Himanshu Bhushan that’s not always true. shock helps ease the pain for the moment, but you for sure feel it and most times people don’t and then they look down and then the pain kicks in.
Well his arm had died under the weight of the rock so I don’t think he felt anything cutting through it, but he described feeling a strong burning sensation from the nerve endings

@@JustifiedkNot7077 It's amazing he cut off his own arm but maybe it was necrotic and he's been trying to tell you that. The arm was dead. He has most of his arm, still. His testimony of how he speared his dead hand and then moved onto cutting off his arm makes it clear.
Amputation is one thing, but it’s the idea of breaking my own bones that really gets to me. Being forced to watch my own hand decompose in real time would be pretty traumatic too I imagine.
That poor man was stuck between a rock and a hard place...

I live in Utah, and while I knew about this story before, I had no clue it was THIS terrifying and brave. Wow. I was stunned. I could never go through something like that. He was amazing.

I'm amazed he was able to stay conscious given the circumstances, imagine having every single nerve in your arm fire at the same time.

The first time I heard this story, I guess I just assumed he was some kind of retired military medic or someone like that. When I saw the movie and then watched some videos with the actual guy, seeing how young he was... This is amazing! Nothing short of absolute human survival. I woulda died. I can't even pretend I'd know what to do with such a strong presence of mind. I rarely miss an opportunity to see/hear it told again. It's one of the most inspiring stories of human will I've ever encountered. So much respect to Aron!! Words can't convey how utterly mind blowing this whole ordeal was.

We watched this movie in highschool and it actually started my fascination with exploration and especially cave exploration. And after researching that I quickly realized while I loved it a lot, I would never be dumb enough to do more than a tourist cave and a hiking trip.

Incase some people don't know, there is a Movie about this very matter, called, ofcourse, 127 Hours.
But it is really one of the best non-hollywood-style-action thrillers i have seen in years to date.
Especially when the guy goes through dehydration etc, the movie shows those things very well. Definitely recommended if you got time to spare.
