Today, I'm talking about lily propagation and how to scale lily bulbs to make more lily bulbs for the flower garden.

Many ornamental flowers and cut flowers are TOXIC. ALWAYS do your own research and take responsibility for the plants that you introduce around your kids, pets, and everyone else. Use common sense when handling plant materials: wear gloves, always wash hands, avoid contact with face, etc. NEVER consume any plant which has not been positively identified with complete certainty to be safe and edible. Before planting anything, research to determine whether specific flowers are considered invasive where you live or if there are laws that apply to their planting in your area.

    What is "@freshcutky"?
@freshcutky documents the pursuit of my goal of one day owning my own cut flower farm. Along the way, you'll see random projects, cooking, and of course - growing stuff. I'm not an expert, and would never claim to be. There's always more to learn - this is my journey. The purpose of my blog, and other social media accounts (including TH-cam) is to share ideas. I do my best to offer information that is useful, but reliance on that information is strictly at your own risk and NOT a substitute for professional advice of any kind. No need to cut the bulbs. Each scale will produce 1-2 new bulbs, plus you can save the original one by replanting. 🌱🌱🌱

I really enjoyed this video.last year my lily order came to late to plant , so I put them in pots in my cold basement put them out on the porch this Spring. The potting soil retained too much moisture from rain , so I dumped them out to plant in the garden. One was starting to rot and the scales were falling off, so I put them in sand in a small flat. I’m hoping they get bulbils. It’s 49 degrees this morning, and they are outside in sun, rain and whatever weather. I’m wondering if I should put them on the heat mat for awhile then back outside. I don’t know if they’re going to grow anyway.

Ok got a question. Last year I bought some lily bulbs from tractor supply and planted them in a pot. They sprouted (4 of them) and my dog decided to pull them up and chew them, lol I did re-plant them and they did sprout and grow flowers (only a few). This year they came back AMAZING I have 9 stalks now with 14 buds! I got my first bloom open this morning! Question is...why do they not smell this year? Last year they smelled great. Should I have added something to the soil?

Yes they can, it's going to be a while before they get too crowded. I have amaryllis in large pots, theyre really full pots and they bloom like crazy.( Old horse manure 2 year old,at least, looks like black dirt)works like a charm to feed them. Make some compost manure tea and side dress the plants with the dry compost. Here in south Louisiana, my stargazers and amaryllis never dies, stays outside and green through the winter, they're in bloom now, April 21 and the stargazers are deep green and will be blooming soon.

Can you just plant the lily scales in the garden? I did this on fall when I divided my orientalist lilies and accidentally pulled a few scales off the established bulbs? I live in 7a and we have had a cold winter so they’ve definitely had the right weather for stratification.

I've never tried it, but I can't imagine that it would be much different than the bulb multiplying naturally in the garden. Good luck!

I'm new to plant lillies, I plant the whole sprout 8" deep in the soil. Will it grow or what I did was wrong ?
    Thank you!

Where do you find out if there is a patent on the lily?

Patent for plants. That’s pure evil. The controllers want to have control over everything.
    Thanks for the video.

Only ones that somebody has worked hard to breed. Traditional varieties are free for all our else you could breed your own

Do you protect your lily garden and adult bulbs from rodents and critters? If so, how? Thank you

I don't. I've actually never had any issues with the lily bulbs. So sorry that I don't have any advice. Thanks so much for watching! 🌱🌱

Hello, did you keep the potted bulblets inside or outside once you planted them in the pot?

    • @TONYAwiththeflowers

After I potted them up, I just moved the container outside in a sunny spot and cared for it as normal. Hope that helps! 🌱🌱

Most lilies overwinter here in my yard without any problems. I believe that most of them require a certain number of chill hours to make sure that they'll bloom the following season. I have had trouble with them rotting before, when the soil is really heavy clay.
