      @@womanofwazoThey are Hemerocallis fulva and actually not a true lilly in the genus Lillian. Commonly called ditch lillies, tiger lillies, among other nicknames. They are considered an invasive that provides no benefit to native insects and that can overtake beneficial plants in a natural environment. Thats why they’re not sold at nurseries but there are sellers on Etsy, etc. I have them in my border garden where they can be controlled. I have to thin them almost every year and occasionally give away bulbs with the caveats I mentioned above. I love their numerous tall flowers that almost resemble birds in flight and their blooming signals the beginning of summer for zone 6. I got mine from my brother’s yard 15 years ago. He dug me out a couple of bunches and put them in a black plastic garbage bag so as not to mess up the trunk of my car. I didn’t get around to planting them until a few days later and they’ve thrived ever since. You can’t hardly kill them. I cut them to the ground when the blooms fade and they quickly regrow fresh green foliage that acts as ground cover for the remainder of the growing season, then cut them again in the fall and lightly mulch.

    How long should one wait to dig up and divide the lilies?

    • @OakesDaylilies
      @OakesDaylilies  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      At the risk of sounding vague, it depends on the daylily. Some daylilies grow faster than others so they would need dividing more often. (Some daylilies never need dividing!) You'll know if it needs dividing if a) it's become a very large clump and b) doesn't bloom as heavily as it used to bloom. That being said, it's typically a good rule of thumb that MOST daylilies could be divided every 5 years or so. Hope that helps! (And thanks for watching our videos-- we appreciate it!)

    Good day Mr Oakes , thanks for your videos, we really enjoy them! Do you ever have a problem with fungus that looks like rust on your daylily leaves? If so, how do you deal with it? Regards from South Africa 🌸

    • @OakesDaylilies
      @OakesDaylilies  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi-- thanks! We're having a lot of fun making our videos and appreciate you watching them! We don't have an issue with rust on our daylilies, but we do know that it can be a problem elsewhere. We recommend treating it with a fungicide and removing and safely disposing the leaves from the affected plant(s). I'm not sure what fungicides are available in South Africa. If you have local agricultural extension agents like we do here, I suggest you check with them to see what the most effective treatment might be in your area. If you don't have local ag extension agents, a reputable nursery or growing center should be able to suggest one. Good luck and thanks again for watching!

    I live in WI. After my lilies bloom, I gently pull off the spent flowers so as not to disturb others blooming. For years I wonder what can I do to get continuous flowers all summer. Many of my perennials I deadhead then they bloom again. Is that possible for lilies? Thanks Sue

    • @OakesDaylilies
      @OakesDaylilies  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Daylilies don't bloom continuously all summer. Some daylilies rebloom but they bloom and then bloom again off and on. (Here's a link to a video we shot about this very subject: th-cam.com/video/FrFNifLBHjE/w-d-xo.html)
      Since you live in Wisconsin, your best bet would be to buy early blooming daylilies that rebloom. Here's a link to our website with varieties that would do just that: oakesdaylilies.com/shop/?orderby=popularity&filter_bloom-seasons=early,rebloom

    • @OakesDaylilies
      @OakesDaylilies  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for watching our videos! We typically divide our daylilies in the fall. We prefer fall because it gives the new divisions a great opportunity to get re-acclimated in the garden before summer bloom season... which means we will be more likely to see blooms. We could divide in spring but we're typically super busy in the spring and just don't have the time.

    Do I have to chop down the plants' green foliage in order to transplant?

    • @OakesDaylilies
      @OakesDaylilies  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not at all! We do it because 1) the foliage can get in the way of our shovel (so it's hard to see where we want to dig and 2) the foliage will get ragged and brown once you transplant it so trimming beforehand makes it look neater while it's growing back out/greening up.

    • @OakesDaylilies
      @OakesDaylilies  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a great question! Since grasses are different depending on where you live, we suggest contacting your local extension office. They should be able to provide effective recommendations that work for the invasive grasses in your area. Hope that helps!

    Great video! The one question I have is if I divide the day lilly but want to transplant it a week later will that be okay? How long can the clump be stored out of ground before replanting?

    • @OakesDaylilies
      @OakesDaylilies  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It's best to divide and plant the same day if possible. However, if you absolutely can't get both done the same day or the next, the next best thing is to temporarily plant it in a pot and water it well. If you don't have a pot available, it's possible to leave it unplanted for a week, but you'll need to move it to a dry, cool place that's out of direct sun. Once you plant it, make sure to give it plenty of water-and keep it watered-until it begins to green back up.

    • @OakesDaylilies
      @OakesDaylilies  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You may not love this suggestion, but we would take an old steak knife and just slice between them. You should be able to take them out in chunks that way and keep your pot intact. It's not pretty, but it's effective!

    • @OakesDaylilies

      Whenever they need it. Daylilies can be divided throughout the growing season. We suggest not doing it in summer because it can affect their bloom. Right now, in early fall, is ideal.
