    (Light Spoilers if you're not caught up) Something about the Ace cover story that you may have missed that might make you feel better about it: The milk girl (Moda) that Ace helps is the same girl whose island that the revolutionary captains help when they were revealed and also the same island (Lulusia) which Sabo saves in the recent chapters. She's now with the revolutionary army on Ivankov's island.

    “From the decks of the world” were one of the best for those who read the manga weekly at that time, since we never seen those characters for several years, some for over ten plus years.
    But I guess if you read the cover pages all at once after catching up, and you already seen some of those characters in the main plot, it results in to having a less impact.

    I think you missed the "Where They Are Now" series. Which aren't really counted as cover stories, but they are basically the same thing. They are bit of predecessors for the 2 "From the decks of the world" series that replace them after the time-skip, but have also more storytelling, being focused on just a few small groups of characters. "Where are they now" is divided in two parts. The first part shows the tribes of Skypiea starting to live in peace together, the second part follows the lifes of the Galley-La company and the former Franky Family after the events of Water 7

  • @zackfross98
    @zackfross98 ปีที่แล้ว +50

    The Straw Hats separation cover stories were significantly expanded in the anime as filler. And I think it significantly elevates the cover stories by adding more development and depths in their characters, while having some very funny moments like Franky's personality shifted. Robin's side stories is my favourite cause she has the world building is just amazing at portraying the dark side of the WG.

  • @wrenchdodger
    @wrenchdodger ปีที่แล้ว +224

    What do you mean Ace’s Blackbeard is not good and doesn’t do any world building?
    Ace’s life is saved by Moda. And because of that he agrees to deliver her letter. But when he infiltrates the Marines he blows his cover pretty quick. Yet he saves a Marine’s life in the wreckage of the burning ship and retrieves valuable information on Blackbeard. The bad coffee meeting was run by Vice Admiral Comil who we also see throughout the story.
    So this story not only introduced Moda the Milkmaid, who we formally meet 100s of chapters later when the Revos arrive on Lulusia and she became an eventual Revo herself. It also explains how Ace found Blackbeard, through the info on the Marine scout ship. And overall it’s just funny and feel good before Ace’s story turns very serious (Banaro and onwards).

    • @blakan1478
      @blakan1478 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That´s not world building its just another clue Ace gets in his chase of BB and Aces connection to Moda has not been mentioned since.
      So for a Ace cover story you would expect more or better. I´m not one to doubt Oda but if its true that Ace´s death was planned Its his cover story´s were lackluster I think Oda himself also feels that way since he has been giving Ace more scenes in Wano

    When it comes to CP9 on the run from the navy, it turns out Spandam blamed them for the debacle at Enies Lobby. So they have to be incognito while Lucci heals and the end is CP9 promising Spandam they will have revenge.
    How they managed to get pardoned and promoted to CP0 is still a mystery, I was hoping it would be revealed when Lucci and Kaku showed up on Egghead, and they would just monologued a bit to the Strawhats about their frustrations, it might still happen when we go back, we really want to know.

    Even tho Gedatsu didn’t make the greatest impact of a villain, I liked his cover story for personal reasons. His hand twitching and general mannerisms suggest he’s neurotic and likes to help people, even though he doesn’t reflect a generally friendly demeanor. He helped the yellow shirt guy revive his failing water tapping business solely because he gave him a bed and some food. He worked so hard to the point where he accidentally dug a hole into Alabasta, allowing for a great deal of water to flow in and naturally heat up like an Onsen hot spring. Idk what specific reason Oda had in mind for that cover story, but I appreciate it nonetheless because it’s a silly little redemption story for a character who did deserve better than being a crony to Enel.

    I will never not believe Koby and Helmeppo were not supposed to be a representation of young Luffy and young Ace respectively.
    I have a feeling most of Luffy's backstory was always planned (maybe not Sabo and Dandan, but Garp, Ace, Dragon, and the obvious chapter 1 stuff for sure), and so its narratively obvious, once thought about, that Garp, obviously feeling like he failed Luffy and Ace to an extent, would take a crybaby with a lot of potential and a cold but loyal asshole under his wing to train, because those were who Luffy and Ace were before they grew up.
    And Garp did do them good. Make jokes about Fists of Love and favorite children all you want, but its obvious Garp was not a good parental figure for Luffy and Ace, and its obvious he is trying to make it up to himself by raising Koby and Helmeppo better.
    Koby and especially Helmeppo get very little coverage in the story, but even with the little of Helmeppo we get, we can tell he has changed and is genuinely pretty strong, I'd claim (even if Koby tends to steal his spotlight as an up and coming Marine hero)
    And Koby is now a star, and is a foil for Luffy. Not in literal strength, or even importance, but in ideology and past.
    Point being I love the Diary of Koby-Meppo

    Answering a question about the Crocodile unwillingness to escape the prison. In the Impel Down, he says that after his failed plan in Alabasta, which he spend 3 years on executing, he lost interest in the outside world. So when he was given an opportunity to escape back then, he denied it, and only decided to join Juffy in Impel Down, cause he wanted to get his revenge on Whitebeard. I am not quite sure about why Mr. 1 decided to stay with him, but for Crocodile the reason is clear

  • @banonKING
    @banonKING ปีที่แล้ว

    The first time Hina's ability was revealed was at the conclusion of Alabasta. So the conclusion of Django's Dance Paradise happens before this reveal with him and Fullbody serving under Hina during that conclusion. Which is why the Cover Stories are so important because it gives additional context to the evolving world around the One Piece.
    Also, One Piece is a fantasy. It's not "forcing yourself to have it both ways" if you give characters important narrative sacrifices and they still can have a happy ending. That's part of what fantasies are about... they aren't realistic.

    For me it's a shame they only ever animated like 2 cover stories in the entire One Piece Anime before the Marineford arc since it would have been so great seeing these characters return in they're own stories like Miss Goldenweek, Ace, Jango and Hatchan while also explaining what happened to them between stories

    plus its not the only thing we get to know in ace cover like it tell us about his character how he get his clue for bb and the girl we see later in the story

    As a first time reader who's now at like, chapter ~300ish I have to disagree with Diary of Koby-Meppo only being 'cute enough'. For me, that cover story (and the anime episodes covering the story) is genuinely what made One Piece stand out as a series to me, and is a MUST READ/SEE.
    Koby and Helmeppo are one of the first characters we're ever introduced to, and you'd usually not give them much thought. Just some crybaby kid who has big ambitions and this stuck-up snob who's obviously written to be disliked, right? Well, not here. Not only do we get to find out what Koby and Helmeppo have been up to ever since Morgan's defeat, but we get to see these two genuinely grow and develop as characters in this Cover Story and fight for their own dreams and ambitions. It's extremely groundbreaking for it's time, and is one of the first amazing examples of just how insanely well the worldbuilding is handled in One Piece.
    I bet you serious money that in most other Shounen series, we would've NEVER gotten this much love and attention for such 'forgettable' characters like them. At most, they'd suddenly show up MUCH later, already having completed their training. But in One Piece, Oda takes genuine time and care to make sure that even these two, even HELMEPPO of all people, get the development and attention he deserves. It's even better when you later come to find out that Koby and Helmeppo (especially Koby) become very relevant in their own rights.
    Plus, this is where we get introduced to Garp, another extremely important character to the story. I could go on as to why this Cover Story is so significant for One Piece as a whole, but I think you get the idea.
