Sun God was first time mentioned in Skypiea arc within Noland's flashback. Then later in Elbaf flashback with Big Mom. Crazy foreshadowing. Also giants were introduced in Little Garden, not ogres/onis. Those are two different races.

Dude. Don't wait for the arc to end to continue! Merphy does a recap every break week (approximately once a month, usually every 3 chapters). I think that's a great schedule for someone that doesn't wanna do individual chapter reviews. Trust me, oda's pacing is so incredible right now that you will have PLENTY to talk about every 3 chapters

    • @ShutUpDenny
      @ShutUpDenny  2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

I appreciate that! I just gotta see how I feel. I'm all caught up on Egghead as of now, I haven't watched any of Merphy's One Piece vids since I've been avoiding all content until I got caught up out of fear of spoilers, so I'm not sure how she does it, but I'm afraid it just doesn't fit my style or sensibility. But hey, it's something I'm thinking about

I don't remember the ogre thing have been explained yet, but ogre in japanese is 'oni', a giant, horned creature that wields a club, which represented by kaido and yamato's appearance
oni could be how they refer themselves as, or could also be their literal race, since the horns on their heads are real organic horns
also 'onigashima' literally means the island of oni
the use of kid doesn't have left arm thus it can't be damaged by hawkin's power is so clever!

Ok for why the Government didn't go after him, you have to keep in mind that... The world does NOT revolve around Luffy. They were dealing with so much stuff.
Let me explain with each saga:
East Blue - Luffy wasn't well known yet so it does go without saying they don't know about him having the Gum Gum fruit, or at least only see him as not a threat.
Alabasta - They were working on trying to find a replacement on Crocodile and again, Luffy only became known AFTER he beat Crocodile. Sure they probably should've gone after Luffy then out of all of the arcs, but again, so much stuff were already happening in the background.
Skypeia - The Straw Hats are in the sky, the World Government have no connection with the Sky Islands and thus no connection with Luffy.
Long Ring Long Land - They literally sent Aokiji who is an Admiral, buuuuuut Aokiji decided against capturing them.
Water 7/Enies Lobby - They were indeed trying to kill the Straw Hats there but they are too focused on Robin AND THEN the Blackbeard Ace debacle happened so
Thriller Bark - They confirmed that they sent Kuma to kill Luffy but with them also prepping to war against Whitebeard as well as Kuma lying about Luffy and the Straw Hats supposedly being killed... Yeah
Marineford - ...bruh lol. That entire aftermath, plus the Marines got heavily overhauled with Aokiji vs Akainu and getting a new Fleet Admiral, this is also the same reason why they never went after the Straw Hats in 2 Years.
Fish Man Island - Same reason as Skypeia.
Punk Hazard - Yet another island the World Government has little connection with which was the reason Ceasar could hide there.
Dressrosa - They were cut off from the world cause of Birdcage, Fujitora also then chose to not catch Luffy.
Tot Land - That is Emperor Territory and again, the World Government can't get in there without pissing off Big Mom.
    And finally
Wano - They tried man, they so tried lmao.
So yeah, the World Government got fucked with Luffy's island choices lmao and well, they have so much shit on their plate.

    • @ShutUpDenny

True true true. I think Alabasta and Water 7 are a bit suspect but I accept everything else for sure

    • @Kimikachu22
      @Kimikachu22 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@ShutUpDenny Fair cause I too found Alabasta the most suspect, but at this point I felt that Oda established One Piece to be a story that isn't Luffy-Centric, so I can fully get behind the World Government having so much problems enough that they can't 100% prioritize Luffy ye
      But again, yup, I agree.

    • @7thlittleleopard7
      @7thlittleleopard7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@ShutUpDenny To be fair, Luffy had been on the ocean for only a few months by the time they reached Saobody. Finding people on the ocean is going to be hard, and they had no way to know that Luffy was going to turn up in Alabasta since there were a bunch of different paths he could have taken once into the Grand Line. He could have been on any path forward. Once they found out that he'd been in Alabasta they did send an Admiral after him since they then 'knew' the route he was headed could lead to Water 7, but Aokiji let them go thanks to knowing Garp.
After that, well, they were more concerned with getting Pluton - whether by blueprints or Robin - but hey, there was a Buster Call called, so it's normal for them to have assumed that would be enough to kill things like pesky rubber pirates dead. Didn't count on best ship to bail them out. Then they sent Garp who... well, Garp'd it.
After that they lost track of him in the Florian Triangle until one of the Warlords stumbled on him, but them pesky Warlords have their own agendas, being that they're pirates first and foremost, and you know that Moria wasn't going to let a strong shadow like Luffy's get away (plus at that point there was the whole Blackbeard/Ace thing going on). They sent out Kuma but hey, Kuma had ties to Luffy's father so... though he 'tried' he ultimately gave an out to the crew.
Then they vanished for two years, after being injured badly in the war. If I had to guess, they thought they were dead, but when the fakehats showed up in bubble land they were quick to send out the Pacifista and Sentoumaru. Nothing they'd heard would have let them expect that Luffy would have grown so much, they couldn't get him at Fishman Island, he was off-track on Punk Hazard (remember, they didn't follow any of the compass points when in the New World, instead they followed a distress call, so they were forced off the normal path completely). Then sidequests kept popping up. XDD
Once they knew he was headed to Wano, they headed there too, and once they confirmed he was there and seemed like Kaido wasn't going to be able to easily handle him, they panicked and called for CP0 to get off their asses and kill the kid.

  • @Fro00ot0
    @Fro00ot0 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

A big part of the reason that the world government didnt appear to go so hard after Luffy is because of time imo. If you exclude the timeskip where kuma scattered the crew across the world, Luffy has been a pirate for less than 2 years. In an ocean world like OP, i imagine tracking someone is pretty difficult. On top of having to deal with the shanks/whitebeard meetup then ace's capture, I imagine a lot of their attention was elsewhere at the time. This all makes sense in my head at least

An interesting bit about Kaido: the kanji of his name can be read as "Strong Boy" or "Joy Boy"; maybe with that name he belived he could be THE Joy Boy, and once he realized that wasn't the case he became a gatekeeper of sort for the title of Joy Boy. So ironically calling him an obstacle rather than an antagonist is weirdly fitting!

I highly doubt Kaido is done. I still expect him to come back into the story when the Rocks Pirates and the God Valley incident come into focus later down the line.
Also the reason why Carrot was declared ruler of Zou was not because she "traveled the world". They said it was because she grew more dependable after sailing with the Strawhats. Also because she inherited Pedros will like nobody else. We still do not know what Pedros will actually is so this is also something that could be more relevant later and fills in some gaps.

This just occurred to me after your comments about Green Bull.
Because you're right, he feels decidedly different from the others. In the most superficial sense that he and Fujitora don't wear the traditional suits most high ranking marines wear, perhaps visually nodding to the fact that these men joined the navy via conscription and not based on duty or specific sense of justice. So, these two new admirals showcase the opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of their personal philosophy and morals.
Also, to show that the marines/WG aren't as much of a unified force as they had been pre-timeskip.
    -Kuzan leaving the marines
-Fujitora refusing to arrest the Strawhats based on his own sense of justice
-Fujitora displaying a strong sense of self versus Green Bull's almost fanatical devotion to the WG

Very likely they lost track of him a few times too. There's multiple paths at the start of the Grand Line and New World, after all . Also, it wasn't until the issues in Alabasta that they could confirm what path he was on, (since Drum Island was uncommunicando, Whiskey Peak got wiped out and I doubt they have agents on Little Garden) before the crew disappeared into the sky. Once they figured he was headed to Water 7, Aokiji let them go because Garp was a friend, then after Enies Lobby they got lost in the mist (and you know Moria didn't tell the gov shit about the super powerful rookie pirate shadow he wanted to use) and Kuma was his father's friend so went "oops, I left all the pain to his swordsman and noped out should i go back?".
Then it appeared that Luffy may have stopped being a pirate after just vanishing for two years. They tried to get to him at Saobody but didn't expect him to be so strong (mainly likely because they assumed like everyone else that Demalo was Luffy and wasn't that stronker). After FIshman Island they actually didn't go to any of the three usual paths - instead heading to Punk Hazard due to a distress call. After that was a lot of bouncing around from the crew - they weren't on the normal lines so they had to wait to hear from people in the know of where Luffy was (in Dressrosa) before he vanished again (Zou is unchartable unless you have a vivre card, remember) only to finally turn up in Wano.
It must have seemed to the government that he was bouncing all over the place for no logical reason. XD

So about Kaido philosophy: I think he was taught from a small age that he is an instrument of war and nothing more. Always at the whims of world powers that only saw him as a tool to destruction or an obstacle to defeat.
This meant that despite believing in Joy Boy return and the coming of the Dawn he understood he couldn't be Joy Boy.... So he became the forge of Joy Boy return. Be the monster that only the one true JoY Boy could beat. So he became a monster, created more and more war, suffering and hurt in the hopes of finding someone who could withstand it, beat him and therefore prove themselves as Joy Boy.
That explains his longing for challenge, for death. His treatment of Yamato, trying to either force him to be like him or maybe even reveal himself as Joy Boy meaning that a part of him did end up becoming more than just a means of destruction.
By the same token Yamato's whole thing is, in my mind, a rejection of such shackles of expectations and definitions. Something that goes along with the themes of self sacrifice in the name of honor vs self preservation being honorable in of itself as you quite elegantly pointed out.
Anyway that's my two cents. Thank you for sharing your journey with us. It's been a treat and I'm so glad to have stumbled upon your channel.

@@ShutUpDenny It'll be probably shorter than Wano for sure, but let me put it this way : A "short" arc in One Piece is around 20-30 chapters.
Oda can only make 3 chapters every single months then take a well deserved one week break. Add to that the Shonen Jump breaks and the holidays; in the best case scenario, we get between 35 to 40 chapters a year.
So even if the arc is short, I don't see it end before Summer 2023. Right now we're only 10 chapters in and the arc started back in August.

I like Yama because of the parallels with Momo.
The ironic twist of Yamato "becoming Oden" despite being the son of Kaido and Momo becoming like Kaido while being the son of Oden was nice.
Both characters are prisoners living in the shadows of their parents in different ways. Momo is trapped by the legacy of Oden and Yamato is isolated by Kaido and going against him. Both have found strength in allies, but Momo found some strength in himself, something he desperately needed.
I don't agree with the criticism that Yamato and Kaido antagonism doesn't make sense. Yamato shows disrespect to Kaido by idolizing Oden and refusing to do as Kaido says. Also, Kaido was trying to make Yamato strong by isolating him like he was growing up.
Wano was pretty dense so I don't blame people for not seeing something or registering all that was said.

Finally somebody who agreed with me about Zoro, I didn't needed him to be specifically a descendant of Ryuma, BUT I think Oda did an ok compromise where there is some hints of him indeed being related to Ryuma cause Fate, but, it ultimate didn't mattered. I think it's a great balance.
As for Kaido, fair, a lot of folks wished Oda focused more on his backstory whicg hey, I agree with. But considering Kaido's life of being in a warring land and constantly being used for his strength, it does make sense why he believed Yamato cannot have friends.
Yamato is definitely a mixed character yeah, a lot of people pointed out that he was too based around Oden. However, to be completely fair at least, I feel like people focused too much on his idolization of Oden when he himself has done things that is not based on Oden. He calls himself a guy and fought Kaido because HE wants to, he embraced the role of protector, and his sacrifice of not joining Luffy for the sake of Momo is touching. I agree he could've been better but the fanbase had casually ignored a couple of important stuff about him so yeah.
Otherwise, I completely agree with Carrot. That is definitely the one thing that I can't excuse in this arc lol. Though hey, now that she's queen, who knows? Maybe that's a chance to do something new with her (not that I don't mind her).

I think the further explanation we got with Yamato makes sense, though I'm obviously bummed not to have him join the crew since I was hard stanning him. I love his design and interaction with others, but he shines with his interactions with Momo most so it feels more organic to leave them together. After all, he did eat the fruit that made him the protector of Wano. Feels weird to take more away from the country after it already lost so much.
Also I've legit been stanning another character (from the current arc) since they first showed up in the story and have wanted them with the crew because I just knew they're dynamics with them (and Luffy, especially) were going to be fun. Do I think they'll stay around forever? No, but I love what we've seen so far and want to see a lot more of them hanging around. The Yamato-Kaido relationship, as well as Kaido's backstory as a whole, felt SEVERELY lackluster to me. It felt like there were so many aspects of Kaido's character that just never got a satisfying explanation. Overall, I enjoyed Wano for the lore reveals, but I personally don't think it stuck the landing.
I've seen the argument that Kaido's backstory HAD to be barebones because all his motivations are so tied to the Rocks Pirate Crew. I can see that being the case, but in my opinion, it's still the result of a major misstep on Oda's part. He has full creative control over Kaido's character, he didn't HAVE to stuff every important moment in Kaido's life into his time on the Rocks Pirates. Take Big Mom as an example, we got plenty of stuff in her backstory that had nothing to do with Rocks, but still illuminated various aspects to her character. It just feels like Kaido's backstory could have been disentangled from Rocks just a little bit; it felt weird to come out of Wano not understanding much more about Kaido than when we entered Wano.
Like maybe some more stuff about the Ogre/Oni racism that is alluded to? Something about Yamato's mom? Something about Kaido's suicidality? Idk, it felt like we should've gotten something more about Kaido during the arc where he is the primary antagonist

^Fully agree. Great point about Big Mom. We could've definitely gotten young Kaido before he joined Rocks to at least give us something. Maybe his relationship with his father would flesh out his relationship with Yamato. There was just too much blank space with him

Momo holding up the island was also extremely disappointing. This moment of Momo holding the island was built up for so many chapters, and when it actually happened it was sidelined to 3 tiny panels. I dunno, it felt like it was the crowning moment to Momo's character growth throughout the arc, and it ended up being a "blink and you'll miss it" sorta thing.
And WHAT was up with Zoro seeing the grim reaper? That just....never gets followed up on?
And what was the point of having Zuneisha, Green Bull, and Shanks show up, just to then leave without doing anything?
Oh, and why did Hiyori show up, only to monologue at Orochi until Denji swoops in to save the day?
Man, thinking back on it now, the ending to Wano really was full of ???!? moments

I liked the Momo thing, I thought it was a clever way to keep him in the action but I see your point. Definitely didn't have a glorious climax
And yeah, so many loose threads, kind of hard to discuss the ending without having the context if any of it is going to matter

Just a bit til you catch up properly, gasp 😱, now you can agonize every week or two between chapters like the rest of us.
I'm glad you did like Gear 5, because some fans were up in arms about it for the subversion to the usual power up, despite that being the whole point to Luffy. Wacky cartoon shenanigans is totally Luffy and I feel that saying otherwise shows you don't get One Piece really, it's not a Shonen battle manga, it's a Shonen adventure manga. Comedy is king.

Gear 5 is PERF for Luffy

I’m pretty sure the reason they didn’t immediately go after Luffy was because in the past 800 years no one had awakened it, other people have had it but no one brought out it’s true power. That’s just my head canon though

Makes sense in a way, although they did go so far as to have CP9 escort the fruit when they captured it
