Panasonic S5II or S5IIX in 2024? vs the Full Frame competition

  • Now that the Panasonic S5II and the S5IIX have been on the market for a little over a year (S5IIX just under a year)... I wanted to share my thoughts on whether these cameras are worth it in 2024 compared to the competition for full frame mirrorless cameras. (For example, the Canon R6, R6II, Sony AIV, Nikon Z6II)...
    Price to performance they are feature rich and both great options in 2024 but do have some noticeable weaknesses that I hope Panasonic will address in the future iteration of these cameras down the road...

    I've just purchased the S5II as a bundle at an unbeatable price: S5ii + Lumix S 24 - 105 mm + Hollyland Lark Max Duo Wireless Mic + 128 GB Lexar Professional V60 SD Card + Tiffen Variable ND Filter for just £2399 which is absolutely crazy. Looking at the price of these accessories alone it means I've paid £1979 for the camera + lens which is insane considering how powerful this system is.
    I've tested it out in the field and the autofocus has been great actually, it hasn't failed me once. The only drawback that I can see for my use case is the fact that the autofocus is not available in slow-mo.
    I was considering a Cannon R7 which is a great camera at a good price, but the Canon RF system lacks depth, there just aren't any interesting lenses at a reasonable price (below £1500) and it's a shame for the R7 as it is a great camera. I've had a Sony A6400 in 2019 and it has been a good camera, but the lack of IBIS has really made me get something else after all this time. The reason I haven't chosen Sony again is because their IBIS (even when you get it) is not great and I absolutely despise their menu system.
    Panasonic has a great, light years better menu system compared to Sony and in my opinion also better colors, more true to nature. I've also looked into the lens system and I was shocked by the variety and good prices. Hope you're enjoying the camera Daniel.

      That’s such a nice steal. I’m curious how you feel about that 24-105, by all accounts I’ve heard it’s very versatile and it’s par-focal? Also, I know what you mean about Canon.
      The autofocus is good but gotta know the right settings when filming people (face vs eye). I do think Sony and Canon’s tracking are better but the S5II is no slouch and does a decent job for their first entry with phase detect.

      @@xdanielpatrick The lens is better than I thought it would be, the only downside is that it's quite heavy, so in the future I will probably get a 35mm prime for my regular street, out and about photos and videos and I will reserve this one for my fishing trips where I do need more reach than 35mm. Indeed it's par-focal and I've tested this feature a couple of days ago while recording a squirrel at different focal lengths. Sony has by far the best autofocus in the game and Canon is not far behind, but for me and what I normally do Lumix does it more than good enough. After I've posted the previous comment to your video last night I've recorded something indoors and the autofocus lost my subject for a second and I then realized it was because of the poor lighting. Then as soon as I pressed the AF ON button on the camera, it immediately reacquired the subject and hasn't lost it afterwards.

      The 35m 1.8 is a beauty..it's my fav lens. I got the S5ii +kit lens 20-60 and the 50m 1.8 for less then 2k. The new updates have made the camera even better.

    Great video man. Just FYI - you mention that the LUMIX drops to PDAF in high frame rates, I think you mean DFD? Just so people are clear on that. I own the S5IIX and it’s a PHENOMENAL camera.

    • @xdanielpatrick
      @xdanielpatrick  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah my bad if I said that by mistake. Must have slipped up my words. Yes, it drops to DFD when in high frame rates in Full Frame HD but in 4K high frame rate modes it still retains PDAF because it goes into APSC.

    I'm looking at the value. The S5 just became a front runner with great lens packages offered. I have also looked at the R8 and the A7iv. I think the Z6iii could be a game changer for video but I need something soon and waiting around for that is not an option. I have always believed Nikon glass is superior to anything else but its all about the value and that's why I have have never really been interested in Canon till the R8. I appreciate your comprehensive review and found it very helpful.

      Glad this helped, yeah the original S5 is great if you don’t care for phase detect.

    Thanks for your long-term review, Daniel. Just wanted to mention that one of the updates to the a7S III that came out recently was the addition of Timecode in as metadata. Apparently, it does require a special cable made by Sony that would connect from something like the Deity TC-1 or the Tentacle sync in to the multifunction port on the a7S III. I really wish Panasonic would do that with the S5 / 5 II / 5 IIX and the S1. As for the R6 II, from what I understand, it has LOWER dynamic range than the S5 II / X, even when shooting the R6 II in full frame 60p and shooting the S5 II / X in aps-c sensor size at 4K 60fps. (Hats off to the Sony a7 IV which beats the S5 II / X in dynamic range by around half a stop). Looking forward to whatever Nikon unleashes with the Z6 III.

    • @xdanielpatrick
      @xdanielpatrick  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes I think the A7IV has a slight edge in dynamic range but I don’t feel compromised with the S5II’s dynamic range at all. I think colors SOOC appear better (to me) on the S5II but that is subjective. Also, that is interesting about the embedded timecode data for the A7SIII.

      @@xdanielpatrick Thanks for your further input, Daniel. I am really torn about getting an S5 IIX. The newest updates (announced during NAB), really make it compelling, espescially the built-in proxy generation. But the fact that a lot of people say the image quality suffers in picture profiles outside of V-LOG concerns me a bit (although I mostly shoot in V-LOG, there are times when I don't). Also, if they could just find some way to take the AF performance up a notch, that would be great, too.

    • @xdanielpatrick
      @xdanielpatrick  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@marinrealestatephotography I personally don’t feel it suffers much at all when shooting in CinelikeD2. The AF, yes I agree it could be improved further but it is no where near contrast detect AF. Also, the new firmware that was just announced for later this month should be improving the AF more. I plan on updating but I am more concerned with the preamps on my copy.

      @@marinrealestatephotographyI use natural profile and never any issues. Also the S5ii has real time luts. For the price it's a camera worth getting. The new FW updates makes the camera even better. Having a native lens also adds to how good the camera is. Can get camera and lens deals that around 2599 or less. Sony cameras cost that for just the body.

    Is there a good L-mount to E-Mount or EF-mount adapter that you tested? I really wanna get myself a S5IIX for the Full Frame OpenGate and SSD recording but lenses are expensive and not many options for telephoto

    • @xdanielpatrick
      @xdanielpatrick  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have not yet, I have heard there is a decent adapter for canon EF lenses. I agree, not that any telephoto lenses for Lumix.

      As far as I am aware they are identical models S5IIX just has some additional features like SSD recording, ProRes recording and I believe a wireless live streaming feature.
