I came upon him in central park just once and have been looking for him ever since. His music is magical and he is a sweet, gentle soul. He made his dulcimer himself. I think he lives in Maine now and custom makes harps. I wish he would make his music available for us to buy.
I remember Arlen playing in the different plazas and street corners in Old San Juan, back in '94 or '96 or in between. Years later I saw him again and bought his CD, I don't know exactly where or when. It was eventually lost to thievery along with my music collection, and it haunted my memories. I'm so glad you shared his music. It is as beautiful as it was.
That's where my family encountered this gorgeous music, back when I was still just a teenager. I still have the CD our family purchased that night. it's a precious treasure I won't soon part with.
I guess it was the early 90s when I went to New Orleans. Mostly for s***s and giggles, I found myself in Jackson Square at around 3am. I wasn't drunk but.. relaxed. When outta nowhere this dude pops up and begins setting up a hammered dulcimer. There was almost no one around and the sound of this instrument reverberated off all that glass and concrete, filling the air with the most beautiful sounds my young ears had ever heard. I simply fell in love with this instrument. Thank you for posting this 😊
Yes I too have always loved this instrument, found in many cultures east and west. Arlen’s playing is singularly unique in all the world’s recordings, invoking magic, wonderment, transcendence ❤
So glad to find this. I bought this CD from Arlen when he was performing on Commercial Street in Provinctown Mass. I used to listen all the time and alas the CD has gone the way of the rotary phone and so glad I found this on TH-cam, very relaxing and soothing!
Peaceful yet energetic. Chopping vegetables on a cloudy, windy day this is a bright flicker in the room. Daughter commented, perfect soup making music!
Ted I haven't been in the loop and frankly I haven't wanted too. I was in a band in Iowa for 2 years and then moved to Branson in 2015. I know my husband had a hard time adjusting. Anyway when he took his life I was devastated and have had no desire to get back with the dulcimer. I have played at church which was so hard. I even payed money to learn the Hallaelua song. Still working that out but I just wanted to say I have loved your pod casts and I feel like you are so talented don't give up on the thing that you do. Love you and your music. Me
I met Arlen back in the early 2010's on a trip to Central Park in NYC. I still have this CD, and still hunt like mad for the others he recorded. He was one of the most gentle people I've ever met.
So happy to find this! I bought this CD from him after hearing him perform in Central Park while chaperoning a school trip. For me, it's one of my "go to" Christmas albums. Really magical stuff! Thanks for your efforts in keeping this musical gift alive... ✝️
Hi Mark, thank you very much for uploading this gem as I have been trying to seek out Arlen's CD with no luck. My daughter plays the hammered dulcimer and its a truly fascinating instrument. If you seek similar talent I highly recommend Amanda Lowe "Spiraldance" which is just a masterpiece.
I bought this CD from this man in Boston common on a drizzly October afternoon in1996. Haunting and familiar, this music has remained in the grey skies and the autumn New England season of my most nostalgic remembrances. Thank you so much for posting this... especially track no. 3. i am 20 years old again.
We have such similar memories of Arlen Olesen. I too, had these magical days listening to him in person, and on his CD. (Cambridge MA) 1996-98. Brings back my late 20's, New England Autumns, and love of all things Celtic.
Thank you for taking the time to do this. Arlen was a very talented musician who seems to have vanished and I am glad that his music continues to reach new listeners.
I used to listen and chat with him back in Cambridge, Harvard Square in 1997-1998. Each day his tunes, hauntingly beautiful (!) coming through my office window. Such magic drifting throughout the city! I still play my 'Further Beyond The Pale' CD I bought from him one afternoon. Shall never forget him and each one of his songs.
Thank you for posting this beautiful album and thank you for caring about the artist and his story. I discovered this musical treasure through your video. It is all the more special that you have collected tale enough to honor the artist, Arlen and company, and their work. Again, thank you for this gift. :)

Never have heard of Arlen His playing is mesmerizing the sounds are enchanting Thank ya for sharing ✌️❤️
Beautiful music, it reminds me of when I lived in Hungary. It is a common instrument there and is called the cimbalom.

Thank you ❤💌💚💝
love the music. Picture is upside down. the beehive should be on the bottom with the narrow end up. Sorry for being so fussy. Kept bees for years
Thank You - I would have never known, even that there is a beehive in this graphic!
Thank You so much. 🎶💙🎶

I bought this CD in Provincetown also when she was performing on Commercial Street years ago. Still love it
lol I just commented on the video of him in NY playing from 09 wondering if anyone had any other videos... I think you commented on it.
So lovely thank you

noice
Eu tenho isa musica ao CD, e muito bonito!
Nothing so wonderful than having beautiful music rudly interrupted by parasite advertisments
Oh come on, I know you want to monetize your channel but do you have to put commercials in to interrupt this beautiful music ????
This channel is not monetized. TH-cam provides commercials automatically when you don't have a subscription.
You do know the list in the description is near useless, because you've confused length of the individual item with total position?
When he was performing (oops)
