There Is a Fountain (Cleansing Fountain) on hammered dulcimer by Timothy Seaman

  • www.timothyseam... Timothy Seaman plays a great Appalachian folk hymn from the shape-note tradition --- in his own pianistic solo hammered dulcimer approach. The simple, sentimental melody often is played or sung in a quaint manner, but the artist here chooses to treat it as an extended experience related to its almost overwhelming words of the great English poet William Cowper (below).
    Timothy has recorded this arrangement, with guitar and mountain dulcimers added, on his album for the Blue Ridge Parkway, Cleansing Fountain, available for audio samples here: timothyseaman.c....
    Also, a detailed discussion of how this arrangement was developed is in Timothy's blog: timothyseaman.c....
    Text by William Cowper (pub. 1779), titled 'Praise for the Fountain Opened,' written after relief from his first battle with major depression:
    There is a fountain filled with blood drawn from Emmanuel's veins;
    And sinners plunged beneath that flood lose all their guilty stains.
    Lose all their guilty stains, lose all their guilty stains;
    And sinners plunged beneath that flood lose all their guilty stains.
    The dying thief rejoiced to see that fountain in his day;
    And there have I, though vile as he, washed all my sins away. ...
    Dear dying Lamb, Thy precious blood shall never lose its power
    Till all the ransomed church of God be saved, to sin no more. ...
    E'er since, by faith, I saw the stream Thy flowing wounds supply,
    Redeeming love has been my theme, and shall be till I die. ...
    When this poor lisping, stammering tongue lies silent in the grave.
    Then in a nobler, sweeter song, I'll sing Thy power to save. ...
    Lord, I believe Thou hast prepared, unworthy though I be,
    For me a blood bought free reward, a golden harp for me! ...
    'Tis strung and tuned for endless years, and formed by power divine,
    To sound in God the Father's ears no other name but Thine. ...

    I heard you play this live at Seneca Rock Discovery Center in West Virginia, several years ago. The sound was so magnificent, the tears started flowing. Words can't describe how absolutely beautiful it was. It took a while after you were done before I could even talk, seriously. I was finally able to compose myself and tell you how beautiful it was, and you were so gracious and kind. I will never forget walking inside that building and hearing that heavenly sound. Thank you for that. Your talent is a gift to us all.

    It sounds like a bit of "Kum-baya My lord'' has been snuck into this wonderfully uplifting melody. It is absolutely beautiful, definitely needed in this critical time where we are dealing with the struggles people are having to go through with the virus lock-down. Good music has a way with uplifting one's spirits, thank you Timothy Seaman.

      William Cowper was an unusual poet with great personal emotional struggles --- so perhaps the self-focus comes from his own experience primarily. John Newton was his pastor and he actually stayed in town at times just to make sure Cowper was safe!

    Who makes the dulcimer you play? Beautiful!

    • @timothyseaman
      @timothyseaman  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! Simple answer: Dusty Strings --- it's a D600 model made of Honduras Mahogany. Complex answer: But it's one of the first ones made, and probably is the individual one that has been played the most, so the wood has a full and mature sound. Also, I play very fully and emotionally, and I use the suede side of the hammers for a piano-like voice. I have developed this arrangement technique to be able to express the content of the music like a pianist can, and I've arranged it in a 'epic' manner with increasing-in-scope interludes and shifting minor chords for emotional impact, and I've recorded it with good stereo microphones in a quite live reflective space. All of this counts for the overall effect here! It's one of my favorite pieces to play in my repertoire.

      In the past I used to use flexible hammers made by Sam Rizzetta, but I my body language made me have to try too hard to keep on timing. I recommend them otherwise --- a wonderful sound. But these here are stiff wood Dusty Strings hammers, and I guess the video makes them look like they're bending.

    Do you have this wonderful arrangement written out? I would love to learn it.

    • @timothyseaman
      @timothyseaman  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I developed this arrangement using primarily a 'pianistic separated hands' technique I've devised for slow, simple tunes, and there are many chord changes and rhythmic elements combined intuitively as a 'duet' of the hands. The idea of the technique is to use stylized triangular patterns in the right hand, plus some other patterns, as accompaniment for the left hand's melody part, much as a pianist does with the reverse hands, so it isn't a collection of notes that would easily be put into a score and learned, but it's an arrangement world that comes from the player, and is adapted moment by moment as it is played --- I play it differently every time. I suppose it would be possible to study the video and make a score roughly representing the way that particular performance went, and I have done that before for a few other arrangements at people's request, but... I'd rather that you studied how to play the separated-hands technique and develop your own arrangement of this and other tunes! It would probably take many hours of hard work to reduce this to a score, and I don't have that luxury at this time... but perhaps someday at least a basic score of the general idea could be done for people to study how the technique works. I wrote a series of four articles several years ago for Dulcimer Players' News that introduces how to play the technique and train your hands to work like a live duet, and I'd be glad to point you to those if you e-mail me at timothyseaman@gmail.com.
