American professional sports has always been star driven. The problem is thing like the NBA SuperTrap contract, that’s keeping stars like LaMelo from moving on to better teams that people actually want to watch. That’s the problem, these contracts are so long, and players have nothing to gain by switching teams but pride until they’re already on the wrong side of 27. Lillard was another prime example of that, instead of watching lillard help teams make finals runs, we watched him put him crazy stats on a garbage team that never had a real chance of coming out the west. There would be more parity if players switched teams more often, and without forcing their way out and forcing the team that gets them to lose a ridiculous amount of assets win a trade. More players need to switched teams in free agency, rather than trade. But the NBA has rigged the contract rules to avoid stats ending up in free agency because of what KD did.

Let's be honest, the NBA tried to market someone to be the face of the league, but failed three times (Andrew Wiggins, Ben Simmons, Zion Williamson, etc.)
The best player in the league right now isn't being marketed properly, plus the whole NBA being afraid to market European players as the face of the entire league.
Don't be afraid to market non-American players as the face of the league. The MLB is doing this with someone from Japan and someone from the Dominican Republic.

I think this is showing the positives and negatives with growing up in the social media era. I feel like the biggest issue is the mismatch between WHO the NBA marketed as the next big superstar vs. WHO actually became the next upcoming young star. 2014 NBA marketed Andrew Wiggins, which he ended up just being a quality role player. 2015 NBA marketed KAT, but did not show too much improvement from his rookie season. 2016 NBA marketed Ben Simmons, which he flopped. 2017 was all about Lonzo, but Jayson Tatum ended up being the star of the draft class. 2018 I think they tried Marvin Bagley but he kind of lost his hype while he was in Duke. 2019 was Zion, and he is a part timer now. 2020 was kinda weird with COVID, but they tried to market LaMelo instead of ANT. There are young players who are hungry and work obssesively to try to become the next upcoming star, but NBA continued to fail over and over again on who to market as the "next big thing." I hope Wemby continues to show promise and can succeed the torch from LeBron and Steph sometime soon...

The problem isn’t that we don’t have the young stars that can lead the new generation. Guys like Ant, Paolo, the young trio in OKC, and Wemby. The problem is traditional sports media (ESPN, TNT, etc.) don’t talk about them because they play in smaller markets. Paolo didn’t get a national TV game until his 2nd season despite being excellent as a rookie. They need to lift up the small and mid market teams, not cast them aside and beg the players to leave for NY or LA every offseason

    • @Simon_Sez

Paolo being excellent as a rookie had no impact on how many national tv games they played that year because those are scheduled before the season even starts. They would’ve had to either predict he’d be great and risk Orlando sucking and being on national TV -- or see him killing it throughout the year, then find another national tv game to cancel at a date and time when Orlando already had a game scheduled, and expect the Orlando game to be better than any of the other games they could’ve flexed in instead.
I don’t really think that’s something to criticize the NBA for not doing lol they rarely flex national tv games, and like you said, he got his games when the next schedule came out for year 2

You have to have subscriptions to subscriptions and know a guy who knows a guy in order to watch the hornets play the wizards, so long as you don't live in one of those two markets, cause if you do, good luck seeing your home team play a game if you're not at the game irl

I think an underrated problem is the inflation of stats. Everyone’s super in today’s league. 37 players are averaging 20 points per game, 13 players are averaging 25 per game, and four are averaging 30. The year Curry won his first chip, only 20 players averaged 20 per game, only four averaged 25, and no one averaged 30. It was way more balanced. And it was an accomplishment to score. Now you can average 20 by making a few threes and getting fouled because your defender had bad breath for a second.

SGA: too quiet and a generic game
    Jalen: ain’t that guy
    Spider: ain’t that guy
    Ginnias: unreadable for culture reasons.
Jokic: boring game and looks like he hates playing
Lamelo, wemby I feel like are the ones right now who I feel like can do something about it
Wemby like Lebron: freakishly gifted does and does things we’ve never seen
Lamelo like Steph: a more relatable game but still does things we’ve never seen.

Wemby in MSG cleared NFL that day by itself. Literally people only watched for Beyoncé cause those games were dogshit.

You so loud and so wrong lol spurs-ny knicks game only averaged 4.9 million viewers. That game wasn’t even the most watched NBA game of the day. The Chiefs-Pittsburgh game averaged 24 million viewers and that’s without Beyoncé performing. 24 million viewers watched Baltimore-Houston. Beyoncé performance peaked at 27 million but 24 million people actually watched the game lol it’s ok NFL is more popular than the NBA and it’s not even close. Hell College Football gets more viewership than the NBA. College football is the second most popular sport in America it’s not the NBA anymore

    • @sneakervulture
      @sneakervulture 14 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

Even sadder part for the NBA is their games were actually on cable tv and they got outdone by NFL games played on Netflix and the games weren’t even good

    • @TimetototallywatchCinema

@ dawg people watched the NFL cause they thought they was gonna get games. Two boring blowouts on Christmas ain’t entertaining. The NBA had close games all day bruh. And we are talking about NBA and NFL not college football don’t even know why u bringing that up. And wemby in the garden was the opener and the best game of the night was curry and Bron cause they are still box office not fucking Texas and ravens or chiefs and Steelers with washed ass Wilson.

@ and they still had better viewership ratings than the NBA. Again Beyoncé didn’t perform during the Chiefs-Steelers game and 24 million people watched that game. It’s ok man the NBA can’t compete with the NFL in popularity or viewership. I used college football to show you how far the popularity and viewership has fallen for the NBA where college football is now the second most popular sport in America not the NBA

Its interesting to see that during a time of parity in competition, the viewership continues to drop, while it was the highest during superteam eras.

This video and most of these comments are right and it's good seeing that.
Im sick of the brain dead takes that boil down low viewership to "too many 3s". Definitely part of the problem but there are bigger issues like this one (marketing stars or having stars to market), availability of players, low stakes regular season games, and access to the games.

Don’t know if I agree but it’s good to see a take which isn’t like all the cliched rose tinted hyperbolic overly simplistic nonsense I am seeing in the comments
Personally I think it’s more a reflection of the world we live in now. Ten years ago there was no TikTok, Netflix, easy access to other countries sports and stuff like anime etc. the nba like all forms of entertainment has far more competition for people time than in the past. And ten years ago you couldn’t catch highlights completely free of every single game within an hour of a game ending! Back then if you wanted to see players play you had to watch the game, most people now just watch highlights because it’s quick free and convenient.

Wemby is the exception - he's going to be an all timer.

Maybe a balance to these players getting so much money on the 50/50 split is to give all the arena employees a huge raise to like 6 figures and focus more on recruiting the best arena staff. The arena experience improves, thousands of people get better pay, and the players maybe don't get 50M per year, which is almost triple the average CEO pay.

THANK GOD for this video. People talking about 3s, when its really exactly what you pointed out. I love watching melo play, but the kid stay hurt. I wanna see if Kawhi will be a great, always hurt. Joel Embid wont play back to backs. Zion loves strippers and food more than basketball. When I watch a game at times I am watching a teams 4th option vs another teams 3rd option. Making it just not worth watching. When you watch a game you have a 50% chance of watching a star player. But you have to pay 100% of your viewing subscription. Thats just bad business, you know they dont love the game when the incentive for all star games and mid season tournaments is more money. All of their contracts should go back to a pay for play model. You miss 40 games, you miss 40 games worth of pay.

I dont like how NBA players are just like friends now. I loved it when players hated each other on the court, wanting to demolish each other. That heat, drama, and competitiveness are making NBA worth watching. Now players work out with each other, just laugh together on the court.

i think the reason why lbj and curry had lots of views with their games is because they had different playstyles… brute force vs agile shooting..
now adays, the difference is… side step vs step back 3’s.. it’s not really a different playstyle..

If I could I would literally go out there and give competitiveness and loyalty and fundamentally sound bball for like $5000 a year, not a typo. the "stars" these days are babies and bums and it pathetic. Been a fan for so long and used to watch every game for my home team, now I look up the games and 90% of the time I see the match up and have zero desire to watch. Just don't feel like im missing anything. NBA has indeed lost its aura
