    My dad has inverted controled, when I asked him why he explained this. Instead of being the character or being inside them (how I see it) he plays as if his hand has a grasp on said character's head. So he pulls back = the characters head goes up. He pushes forward = the head moves down. I use inverted in flight games because that's how a throttle works but I always found his thought process quite interesting.

    The camera inversion is a simple matter of perspective and how people view the "mechanics" of the camera. Many gamers have subconscious awareness that the camera is physically present and in order to see certain directions you must move it with the camera stick (turn left, see right). Other gamers consider the camera more a matter of which direction you are literally looking (turn right, see right). This is still usually a subconscious act, as the player doesn't generally choose which aspect makes more sense, but settles with what makes immediate sense.

  • @irishgotee
    @irishgotee 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    For the inverted controls, I for one think it makes more sense. Think of the joystick as a person's head....you tilt your head back to look up. With movement I think up like on a d-pad or moving up on a joystick as a direction, moving up is moving forward. So one joystick is the characters head and the other is the legs. But I still think it is awkward because with that logic you swing the back of your head left to look, or face right. I could never get used to inverted left and right.

  • @ryanricopico
    @ryanricopico 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I play inverted on console and the explanation I give people who question me is that I instinctively imagine the pivot point of the pov camera is the character's neck/head rather than the eyes. To look up, pulling down on the thumbstick feels like i'm puling the character's head back, and vise versa for looking down. Most people who I've asked that play normal Y-axis settings say they imagine the pivot point is in the pov character's eyes.

    On the protein folding thing:
    I vaguely remember this from 4+ years ago, but I think the idea for the game back then was to use simple folds (that we know the answer to) as the beginning levels of the game, where they give the player the un-folded protein, and the player needs to fold it into the correct shape to move to the next protein. As you progress to more difficult folding solutions, you learn the patterns and the tendencies for how proteins will fold without an explicate equation telling you how to fold it. Then, as you progress and get better at this, they can start feeding you proteins where the real-world solution isn't known. The hope was that any player that gets to this point, would be good enough at predicting protein folds that their solutions would probably be close to the real-world solution. From that point, the scientist could take the solutions that the players come up with, and use them as starting points for the folding simulations, in the hopes of cutting down the total time it takes to find the true answer.
    If I had to guess (because I haven't looked at this in years), there must have been some success in doing this. So, they probably used the levels with known solutions (the training part of the game) to train a Deep Learning Neural Network (probably a recurrent neural network) to create folding solutions that are probably closer (and along the correct folding path) to how a protein folds in the real world. I'm not saying that it's closer to the solution that the players would come up with (although that would be ideal); I'm saying that it would be closer than just starting the simulation with a protein that's in the unfolded state. This has the added advantage that you don't need to retain a player base for years on end. On top of that, as solutions for more complicated proteins are found, they can be added to the training data to further refine the AI.

    I actually have a very unique inversion problem and would love to know where this study is being held. I am 34 and have played games for about 28 years. I played with inverted controls for what I thought was my entire life, it wasn't until I started collecting old playstation and gamecube games that I realized that none of the games I used to play had an option to change to inverted controls, which made them impossible for me to play them when I revisited them. Yet the strangest thing happened to me about a year or so ago after I hadn't played games for about two months due to working extra hours (which I'd done many times before, and even in longer intervals), but this time I got back to playing a game and I couldn't play inverted anymore, and now it seems like I am learning how to play games all over again. I can't explain it and don't know what caused my directional preference to change either time. It's the weirdest thing and I think about it constantly!

I don't remember having any issues with it when I first changed it so clearly it's in my blood or something lol I know it doesn't make any sense in, like, FPS games but I'm so used to it now, why go back? It's a neat little memory of my dad for me.

    There are two reasons I play inverted:
    1) A lot of old school games (Goldeneye 64, primarily for me) defaulted to inverted controls. I spent so much time playing those games that it became normal.
    2) It's a matter of where I view the axis. For me, the axis is not the characters head but the controller, itself.

    @gameranx it’s because people who play inverted thing of a pole behind the head. If you stick a ruler on the back and look down the stick goes up. People think this way or don’t. Most think of the ruler in the front because that’s what they see. In 3rd person games inverted is used a lot more because you are behind the player like the ruler!

    i think the inverted y axis thing is a flight sim thing that you pick up. i played a lot of ace combat as a kid and it stuck. and i find myself having to invert the y axis on some games now because it doesnt feel right otherwise or the controles become confusing.

    I don't understand how people CAN'T invert their Y axis. I thought it was just younger gamers, as most older games had it that way by default, especially if there was flying involved, but I feel like I know so few people who do it. It makes sharing a controller difficult and cumbersome when you have to go into the settings to change it each time. But honestly, I just cannot wrap my head around not inverting it. I used to invert the X axis too. It is primarily for 3rd person games, I feel. As you view the character as a fulcrum. It makes functional sense.

    I always try playing games with non-inverted X axis cuz the vast majority has perfectly good normal controls, but in some very few the inverted X axis makes more sense; I remember I kept changing it for 1 game cuz the brain couldn't make up its mind which made it more sense.

    Regular stretching while sitting or laying down for a long period of time or side effects include more than just bad posture and temporary back pain. It’s the same thing if you do a lot of heavy lifting in your work. Not the hardest thing in the world to learn how to do it properly even if you don’t have access to a physical therapist that can teach you. Feeling a bit sore now, not being able to put your shoes on without an aid when you’re fifty is very much a possibility, and all it takes is getting up and doing a few things for maybe five minutes every now and then, drink some water while you’re at it, then you’ll get an automatic reminder to get up and go go I really need to go.

    Been using inverted controls forever, personally find it easier to deal with kickback on every FPS to re-center my aim. Also allows me to play a full game with giving my brother's and friends the controller 👍🤣

    Frankly I think that scalping could be solved by making people who buy your product sign a waiver that says they will not resell it for 90 days after the purchase date, and a breach of this contract is grounds for a suit.

    I know people have hot takes on whether to invert or not, but for my part, I’m just glad that the option is there to not invert.
    Because it just opens up games to be enjoyed by a whole new audience.

    Number 7 is like 90% because people are old enough to have played games where the up with the mouse was down. The rest are kids who accidentally set it, and got used to it.
