Those are some of the things that make the game addicting and interesting. I'm sure from there you can figure out what scaling out to broader economic models would mean.

Basically, if you are broke, you are in last. The mystery box is now the government. Every so often the government gives you something to improve your standing. This helps with the poverty issue by slowing down the person in first and speeding up the person in last, thereby tightening the pack.
If Day's Gone sells like crazy, there would be a sequal. Yes, 1st party titles are investments for pushing the brand forward, but Games Sold are what dictate if those games are/were worthwhile investments to begin with.
