I just watched a video explaining that two scenes were cut that explained their split. Katie renewed her commitment to her political beliefs, which led to her being informed on for having communist sympathies. He was told that as long as she was his wife, he'd never work in Hollywood. She left him because she didn't want him to be blacklisted. She knew he belonged in Hollywood. She left him because she loved him. That's why they had no contact after the divorce, not even to see his daughter. They cut contact. Removing those scenes left the reasons for their split misleading and ambiguous.

It is the law of attraction. This is why he cheated. By pushing someone to 'be better' you are saying they are not enough. Thats painful. But you can see why she does it- by saying she will change, for him (not because she wants personal growth) its because she doesnt have her own self worth. She feels not good enough so she pushes everyone else to be better, be more.. it's never enough to just BE... and that why I support him ending things. Because she wasnt healthy. He wanted partnership. She wanted to be a boss of a relationship.

But she went overboard with her convictions including her convictions about him and he didn't like that. Truthfully, she's so extra that it's annoying. She seems to have a good heart but they are not in the same ballpark regarding socioeconomic background and status. She'll never fit in either socially, ideologically, or looks-wise and she knows it but she still wants it. She comes off as a bit of a self-hating Jewish woman, tbh.

This is the first time I am exposed to this movie. After a few clips on youtube, I decided to watch it on Amazon Prime. After their fight at JJ's place and she was about to call him, I could not continue to watch. First, I thought the script was so bad that she would do the begging. Then, I calmed down and saw that the movie was really well-made. Young women (of course not all) could be like that, even with all kinds of feminism talks today. At the beginning, it was a mismatch. She was into him but not vice-versa. The first accidental date, he puked then fell asleep on her. A mismatch cannot be fixed, no matter how both sides try. The movie was quite realistic. There was no "happily ever after".

And yet, when Hubbell wants to live for himself, a life less complicated than the one Katie offers him, he's a coward. Personally, I don't appreciate the Katie-types who always think they know what's better for you than you know yourself.
