The amount of things I learn from this channel that I thought were a common thing but learned it's mainly a British thing is crazy. I remember telling an American I was knackered once. He was baffled. Also, they don't do beans on toast over there. I love things like that.

I might be wrong but I don’t think baked beans in a can, like Heinz, are a common thing in the USA. The beans they get in a can would be dreadful on toast, so when you say beans on toast to an American they have a totally different image in their head to our reality.

What I love about this video is seeing a young man with impeccable manners, even though his dad was pushing him for a verdict on the hot dogs, he would not speak or even open his mouth with food in it! When such a young man has that decency on his mind, he has been raised right and will be a gentleman when he grows up. Love this family, very articulate and likeable. And enjoyable content. A+

I'd never have thought to grill them like you did here. We normally empty the jar (or can as you can also buy canned hotdogs) into a saucepan, water and all, and gently heat slowly. Which to be honest, i've never been a fan of as I don't like soggy wet bread! Might buy some of these for 1st time in ages next time I go shopping and grill them instead!

Brooklyn hotdogs are also boiled in their brine. I think this is because the quintessential New York hotdog is mostly sold by street vendors who can easily boil hot dogs with battery power, but can’t walk around with a grill for obvious reasons.

It took us a while to find hotdogs as we didn't think to look on the canned food aisle, but we eventually came across them while shopping one day. Hot dogs and other sausages in a jar is also common in Germany, and always was as far as I can remember way back into the 1970's, before a lot of things went plastic. Makes pretty good sense to me, as glas is a lot more chemically stable than plastic, so with plastic you always get some transfer of chemicals from the plastic into the food. Especially when there is a good recycling system for glas set up, it's also better on the environmental side.
And my trip to Scotland a few years back (boating along the Caledonian Canal) was also one of my best holidays ever.

No, no, American mustard does _NOT_ have mayonnaise in it, and it doesn't have any German mustard in it either. At least, French's mustard doesn't. If you compare the ingredient lists of French's vesus Colman's mustard you will find that French's uses mustard seed, whereas Colman's uses mustard flour. Colman's extra pungency is probably because of the variety of mustard that they use.

Different styles such as frankfurters, brotwurst and bratwurst etc. Also different meats such as beef, pork, chicken, turkey. The chilli brats are excellent. The entire range have very high meat content and none of them are mechanically reclaimed, these are cheap in price but not made from cheap cuts. :)

HOT DOGS IN A JAR have been available in supermarkets for as long as i can remember. My neighbour was addicted to them and that is all she would eat.
I am not a fan of them but i suppose if you were stuck for anything to eat they would be so good

Try Herta Jumbo Frankfurters. They are about 80% meat. The hot dogs in jars are usually much lower meat and made up with water.

Just watched your video dude, randomly popped up on my feed. You can get Dinos in Tesco's...I get them for work as a breakfast snack ( work in the construction industry), we only have a microwave oven for warming food etc, I take one Dino dog, roll it up in a kitchen roll tightly, nuke it for 1 minute. Put it in a bread roll, cover with ketchup and mustard, add salt and pepper and BINGO....lovely... hope you and your family are happy, safe and well. Peaceout dude 🙏

love your content. normally in britain hotdogs in a jar are more expensive than canned hotdogs and you can get hotdogs vac packed from costco but glass does not impart any flavour to the stored product where as canned foods and vac pac foods can , like beer and lager bottled always has a different taste to canned , glad you like it here

Hot dogs used to be tinned, putting them in jars is a quite recent development and I think an attempt to move them more up market.
They do come in the plastic packs as well but those are usual found in the continental chilled food area and labelled bratwurst or frankfurters.

I love my dogs in a jar, will be making some tonight. I like to pop mine in hot water in a slow cooker for an hour till they swell a little and the skin splits, then right on the bun with fried onions, dijon mustard and ketchup. Saw this video and got curious since I never noticed any difference, but I'm not American :).

The “hot dog” sausage was introduced to the US via German immigrants in the 19th century. Germany has 100’s of different regional sausages, with these being known as Frankfurters as they came from around Frankfurt. One of the big variants in German sausage beyond ingredients, is how they were preserved, which also varied by region- some were covered in fat, some pickled, others dried out but a lot were brined. Traditionally they were made from pork, but the coney island version is beef, which is then lightly smoked & boiled. Before the availability of refrigeration, they were then put into “brine” (salt water) which is what creates the slightly rubbery outer skin (which was originally sheep’s intetestines). The brined sausage s would then be jarred which would allow them to be kept during winter months bacteria free. Often kept alongside Sauerkraut, (pickled cabbage) which was also jarred to preserve- just like picked Gerkins. A similar thing happened with fresh, skinless sausages which became the Burger patty (with the Hamburger being the traditional sausage style of the german city Hamburg (not because the patty contained “Ham” 😂)
Basically, jarring is THE traditional method for the hotdog sausage, dating back hundreds of years- wrapping in plastic was an American innovation brought in as a cheaper mass production method in the 1960’s, with a little brine added to maintain texture.

I’ve watched a few of your videos now and I must say they’re enjoyable and I gather this is a good way for you to keep your friends and family back in the states up to date and to journey an adventure which is great, but it’s also interesting for an outsider like me!
I hope that you don’t feel a need to be unnecessarily complimentary towards the UK but I must admit your content has brought to light some very good aspects of life here and while a lot may going awry it’s good to be able to ground oneself a bit and be reminded to be grateful for what we know is there but sometimes neglect.

@@MacandBlair ah that is very cool! I am so curious about people who work in such roles. In fact a lot of the TH-cam channels I favour involve engineering. So far I have only briefly seen your wife (who I presume is Blair) in one video, so I had very little to judge on but when trying the hotdogs she seemed a very pensive person so that doesn’t come as a shock at all!
I very nearly went as narrow as to ask if you were a programmer or something similar. In fact I myself I am a programmer working as a contractor on a blockchain solution for traceability of pharmaceutical supply chains… I would say I have a decent radar for people who think a certain way!
I hail from Lancashire, but I must say that Yorkshire (despite the battle of the 🌹s!) is a wonderful place to go if you haven’t been yet with your family. I went with my folks loads last year… some really beautiful countryside there-Hebden Bridge, Howarth & Skipton should be on your “places to visit” hit list while you’re here in the UK imo!

Have you tried saveloys? Seems you can only find them ready cooked in chip shops these days. Don't remember last time I saw one in a supermarket. They're hot dogs, except, not. They're sausages, except, not. They're kinda in an area between the two. Butchers, or, delicatessens probably still have them. Worth a try if you've never had, kinda unique smokey flavour and denser than hot dogs or sausages. I think they might be a northern thing and having lived in London for ages I just haven't seen them in ages.

I’m not a big hot dog eater, but have occasionally had them when I lived in the Middle East, where there were many nationalities (British, American, various other European nationalities, Japanese, Australians etc), and the supermarkets/stores there catered for all of them, so hot dogs, either in jars or sealed plastic, plus French’s mustard & hot dog rolls were all available. I quite liked them, but prefer them with either ketchup or sone kind of BBQ relish, rather than French’s which I find too sweet. But it’s fun to try different things. I agree with you about grilling/BBQing food - it always tastes so good. I mainly like fish, steak or chicken done on the grill 😋👍.

American style really just refers to the style of sausage. Translated into our English, it really just means it's a hot dog... Unless we specifically choose hot dogs, we generally speaking eat sausages in the UK. Usually pork based, but often a mixture and different styles from all over the UK are widely eaten. I'd even guess that the average person eats sausages once a week, whether for breakfast or dinner, or just a snack. As for in the jar, that's just a way of keeping them in the brine liquid. We can get hotdogs in plastic wrap, cans, jars etc. Typically the plastic wrapped ones don't have brining liquid with them, but the cans and jars do. And as they're pre-cooked, then cooled typically, we can quickly cook them in that brining liquid, or just plain water similar to an american hotdog truck would.
