Logan is my son ... I'm glad he finally got this through.. I saw them live once in 96 and then again in 2015. Great reaction. Dive deep .. all the good tracks are on the bottom.
Awwww.... Just now seeing this! Hahahahahah... I gave your son all the credit. LOL!!!!! But dude, this was a great request. I really enjoyed listening to this. I'll be adding more sound garden to the channel.
Fav song by fav band. And yes, drug trip. And yes, now that you mention it, it's like Flood's cousin. Similar vibe in both songs. Floods is also my fav Panthera.
You were spot on with your drug trip analogy !! Here is what Chris Cornell said about this song in an interview (RIP Magazine April 1994): "One time I was on acid, and there were voices ten feet behind my head. The whole time I'd be walking, they'd be talking behind me. It actually made me feel good, because I felt like I was with some people. At one point I was looking back, and I saw that one person was wearing a black shirt and jeans, and the other person was wearing a red shirt. They were always there. It was kinda like a dream, though, where I'd wake up and look and focus once in a while and realize there was no one there. I'd go, 'Oh, f--k, I'm hearing voices.' '4th of July' is pretty much about that day. You wouldn't get that if you read it. It doesn't read like, 'Woke up, dropped some acid, got into the car and went to the Indian reservation.'"
I've heard this version and also that Chris dropped acid and went to a 4th of July parade, but was really into Native history. Either way, a damn good tune from one of my favorite bands.
@@ks-zc1jh he himself confirmed in an interview that the song was about one day he was tripping while driving and he saw the police red and blue lights in the mirror and thought it was 4th of July.
At a show I went to, he said it was about tripping on acid with his friend at a reservation, people were shooting fireworks off, and he thought it was the 4th of July (he also seemed to stress he wasn't the highest person haha)
Watching y'all listen to these tunes takes me back to when I first discovered these gems back in the 90's. I truly wish you had the opportunity to see these amazing musicians live as I did when I was a young man but I'm thankful their music transcends generations and still brings joy to new audiences to this very day. Much love and respect!
Listening to Chris makes me tear up with grief, because another one of my heroes is no longer here to paint the sky with dark, beautiful truths that our eyes cannot see.
TNT you're spot on. I think they sounded like Black Sabbath in this but your reference to Pantera is good too, floods is on point - so too is this song. Dark & heavy was that, great review! Keep up the good work!
@@flippertheslid3642 It's actually not that low, surprisingly. CFCGBE. So the low E and A are tuned 2 whole steps down, the D is tuned down 1 whole step, and the rest is standard. I genuinely thought that this was Drop F or something when first hearing the song lol
In terms of pure tone and _weight_ conveyed sonically, this song right here is a master class in just making you feel like _something_ is crushing you. Not physically, but psychologically, _spiritually_ even. It has some of the darkest atmosphere of any song I've ever heard, yet retains beauty _somehow._ It sounds GOOD. It relishes in the leaden bluntness.
Cool song. In 1994 Chris told RIP Magazine that this song was in reference to an experience he had during an acid trip. Have an enjoyable & safe 4th, the both of you. :)
Great Album ! I can't believe it's been 3 years since Chris Cornell passed away ... he was such a great talent . I remember the first time I heard Soundgarden back in late 1991 The Bad Motorfinger album Chris Cornell's vocal were incredible! Also check out his work with Temple of The Dog Audioslave.
Do more Soundgarden reactions please. Try beyond the wheel. Chris' voice was one in a million! And also, Chris was in Audioslave, Temple of the Dog plus his solo work. If you do Audioslave reaction look for Like a Stone but the acoustic version from AOL sessions. As for Temple of the Dog ( only one album), there's Hunger strike and Say Hello to Heaven and Reach Down at PJ20 Alpine Valley to name just a few. I doubt you'll be disapointed.
For more downtuned, dirge-like Soundgarden heavies, check out Blind Dogs, Beyond The Wheel, Room A Thousand Years Wide, Mailman, Toy Box, Black Rain, New Damage, I Awake, Slaves And Bulldozers, Cold Bitch, Limo Wreck.
They had plenty. Blind Dogs, Beyond The Wheel, Room A Thousand Years Wide, Mailman, Toy Box, Black Rain, New Damage, I Awake, Slaves And Bulldozers, Cold Bitch, Limo Wreck.
Good song, but not really in the same category… nowhere near as heavy and dark as “4th of July.” Better comparisons would be Blind Dogs, Beyond The Wheel, Room A Thousand Years Wide, Mailman, Toy Box, Black Rain, New Damage, I Awake, Slaves And Bulldozers, Cold Bitch, Limo Wreck.
Its about ppl witnessing a nuclear apocalypse in the end times but they're so clueless and corrupt they think it's the 4th of July. It was banned for the lyric "Down in the hole/Jesus tries to crack a smile/beneath another shovel load.." in Alabama cuz they didn't understand it was symbolism. It's cool you said it sounded like Pantera's "Floods" cuz they're very similar theme-wise & musically. Some of the lyrics in 4th of July are from personal accounts of Hiroshima (I think) cuz parts like "Cool in the waterway/where the Baptized drown.../.naked in the cold sun.leaves the scorched ones here.." sound a lot like survivors' stories of people drowning en mass in the rivers to escape the unbearable heat & having all their clothes burned off. Also "where the Baptized drown" probably refers to Apocalyptic Biblical text on how God destroyed the earth with water the 1st time in the flood, & will do so with "unquenchable fire" the 2nd & how when Jesus comes the 2nd time he will "Baptize with fire"
Chris says the song is about being pulled over by a cop while tripping on Acid, but I hear the contradiction of the 4th of July. A holiday to celebrate American greatness is celebrated with fireworks. America prides itself on Veterans fighting for our freedom celebrates the liberty they fight for by setting off fireworks that remind that trigger PTSD. Sleeping until a loud bang pulls you from your bed to attention. Jesus buried in a foxhole. God letting baptized men die with everyone else. The horrors of war that haunt soldiers for the rest of their lives are triggered every year by a holiday that acknowledges what they fought for.
One of the HEAVIEST Soundgarden tunes in existence!
I can't think of a heavier one haha!
"Gun" is also pretty damn heavy. Idk about heavier tho lol
Jumped right off in the deep end here bud.... u might need medical attention after this.. definitely GRUNGE
Slaves and bulldozers
And I am surprised it never got the airplay it deserved
I'm a black brother and love myself some Soundgarden. All hail to Chris Cornell (the G.O.A.T. of grunge rock singers).
It's a VERY satisfying riff as well to play, it's all about that dark groove.
I f'n love this Soundgarden song. Slaves and Bulldozers is another good one
One of my favourite songs ever. Off my favourite all time album. Soundgarden, phenomenal
Soundgarden and anything Chris does is amazing. My favorite of all time....
No doubt Chris was the G.O.A.T. of rock n roll singers.
@@martelprayer416 grunge*
@adolforomero7243 Chris Cornell done plenty of work outside of 'grunge' and by far the most dynamic singer in rock to exist.
Please check out Limo Wreck as well by Soundgarden.
Yes! Another fav
Hell yes!!!
Don’t forget Mailman!
Terminally underated song.
"Down in a hole
jesus tries to crack a smile
beneath another shovel load"

This song and Mailman are my favorite songs off of Superunknown
OH HELL YES.......ONE of my favs off this album!!!!!!...stoned many time to this song bro lol....the height of the 90s grunge man

I said the same thing about Floods in my Pantera reaction. Definitely one of my favorite songs by them.

Once you hear this it becomes it’s own holiday
If I remember correctly this song is about tripping on acid in a Native American cemetery

I love this song so much
Chris sang all the vocals to this song in different octaves then they put together. So it sounds like couple of different voices together. Amazing
Great song. We digging deep now.
I'm pretty sure Chris Cornell wrote this about an acid trip. This is song always stood out to me.
Love love love the heaviness of this track🖤🤘

Yes one of my favorite all time songs!
Excellent. Soungarden was ear splitting live. Have to appreciate a band that has a slogan "Loud as F*ck" Try Searching With My Good Eye Closed
Thank you for hearing/undeesting the potency of this song! 🙏👍👏❣️
I'm sure Soundgarden's guitarist had dreams of being in Black Sabbath when he was a kid. :)
Kim Thayil
That's actually Chris cornell playing the opening guitar. I think he's tuned to some funky drop F tuning. But don't quote me on the tuning.
@@flippertheslid3642 It's actually not that low, surprisingly. CFCGBE. So the low E and A are tuned 2 whole steps down, the D is tuned down 1 whole step, and the rest is standard. I genuinely thought that this was Drop F or something when first hearing the song lol
Drop c is still pretty low for something not doom metal
Sounds like Doomgrunge. I have this one on CD. I think the title of CD is Superunknown. Epic songs on that one.
I'm so glad this song is getting traction with reactors. Super under rated song by Soundgarden
It's heavy like thunder. Rumbles through you. Love this track!
Clicking like before it even starts. One of my fav songs from this masterpiece of an album
Love your reaction! By far my favourite Soundgarden song. Chris, you are so sorely missed!
One of my favorite Soundgarden songs...
Gotta love songs about dropping acid and going to a 4th of July Parade.
More Soundgarden please! The Superunknown album was a masterpiece. I highly recommend the track 'Mailman' next =)
Felt like a dark old grunge days
Great song. Glad you got to experience it.
Limo Wreck is Soundgardens best song imo other classics off this album are Mailman Superunknown Fresh Tendrils to name a few. Incredible album
I bought this really nice Sony CD player the same day I bought this CD. Holy shit.

Great track. I never thought of the comparison to Floods but I think that’s spot on. Your next song from the same album should be Like Suicide.
Chris singing the harmony in an octave up!
Fuck yeeaaahhhh
This entire album is a stone masterpiece.
Not even Thor can lift this hammer

Ooo Yeah! one of my favorites from them!
I get the floods comparison a bit. Just the hella doominess of it :o

Beyond the Wheel YES! Classic!
Chris Cornell is favorite rock n roll singer and one of the best singers of all time...
That's a good one to play really loud.
React to "The day I tried to live"! Its insane! the riffs, the tempo, the lyrics talking about madness and depression.
U really understand the lyrics...ur right
Nice request. A darker, heavier tune that doesn't get enough attention. Almost Doom Metal. Showing their Sabbath influence a lot on this one. Peace!
Beyond the Wheel and mind riot are good songs as well. And Down on the Upside. Check them out when you have time

Great underrated Soundgarden track, here's another deep cut, Big Business - Another 4th of July ruined...a great band no one ever talks about!
Big Business rules. Loved the Melvins albums and they were really good live on their own too
New sub...rock on brother...🤘
Dude, this is so fuckin high school for me... I remember tuning down to play this... what a great track.
It still baffles me why this song never got the airplay back then when it was released
Yiu gotta checkout the track Fresh Tendrils off the same album....
Cornell blows it down
Great review btw...
This song is describing the war to come in the very near future
😴
It's the heaviest!!
More Soundgarden please
FLOODS by Pantera has no comparison to 4TH OF JULY by Soungarden....you are living in a dreamworld
Alice Cooper has a podcast on TH-cam and talks about Chris Cornell. It's pretty cool.
Alice Cooper has always been interesting listening to. No twisting needed to get me there.
Alice cooper is a class act on and off the stage

They had plenty. Blind Dogs, Beyond The Wheel, Room A Thousand Years Wide, Mailman, Toy Box, Black Rain, New Damage, I Awake, Slaves And Bulldozers, Cold Bitch, Limo Wreck.
This song was about an acid trip
If you haven’t heard Flower by them you should check that one out. 😀👍🤘
