I've always wondered that did they share rhythm guitar parts on the studio albums? I think Cornell wrote most of the riffs or am I wrong? A nice touch that while the song is heavy and doomy Kim's lead is in major scale.
@@petrilampelafrom what I understand, everybody wrote riffs and bass lines (yes, even Matt Cameron), but Cornell was the main composer (and most likely the reason they used so many weird tunings).
Came to say the same. I don't know if it's who I surround myself with, or what - but I don't hear much love for Kim Thayil. I think the thing with him is that he very rarely grabs for the cliche. Like Judson was saying, he makes a sound familiar enough that you're comfortable with it to the point of thinking you know where he's going... then he doesn't. And his choices in tone... anyway. One of my favorite guitarists. Next time, let's talk about Matt Cameron...
And hilariously was only the vocalist instead of staying as the drummer (!!) because they got tired of interviewing or looking for a vocalist. They didn’t realize Chris had that voice at the start of band.
You guys do so many things right - not begging for likes - not pausing the song - choosing good songs, not just hits - real discussion that can go anywhere - great intros by Judson I've been turned on to several bands i didnt know of, I love both of your taste in music, love your humor and realness, and love your moms.. Not the biggest Soundgarden expert, but the song Tighter & Tighter from Down on the Upside, has always been one of my favorite. Last quarter of the song is a guitar solo with Chris singing over it like only he can, it moves me every time I hear it.

"Beyond the Wheel" - "Mood for Trouble" both spectacular examples of some of the points Judson hit here. The Ultramega OK album is a gem! You can hear so many of their musical influences in this album.
I get so happy when I see people discovering absolute gems from the great Soundgarden. They are hugely underrated and are my favorite from the Seattle bunch. Off this same album check out an absolute banger called Superunknown or Mailman. Thank you for this channel, you guys are the best out there by far. You actually have knowledge about music, and meaning..
When I heard superunknown for the first time, it was the song "like suicide" which really caught my attention. A slow song and and awesome wailing solo which still gives me goosebumps.
It's the subtleties in guitar and bass lines that make this song, with Chris's warm vocals mixed in with a slow deathly beat that makes this thing such an amazing oddball of a song. I can't get enough of it. It's other worldly. They must have been tripping when they came up with this, it's so offbeat and beautiful at the same time. I've never heard anything like it.
If you liked this style, you can checkout the following: - Mailman - similar vibe and some fun lyrics to chew on - Fresh Tendrils - great guitarwork - Tighter & Tighter - great song, a perfect blend between the "popular" Soundgarden and the songs above and 4th of July.
Judson ❤ Kim 4ever. What a lovely surprise of song choice! There are few songs as downright sludgy as this one and I'm not surprised it caught your ear. This album has so many great songs and my least favourite without doubt is Black Hole Sun haha! The thing with Soundgarden's song writing is that they wrote the music that they wanted to and (for the most part) it didn't matter whether the audience liked it. That's why it's almost impossible to characterise them and why some of their stuff is just plain weird. I'm not going to recommend a next track to listen to (although Like Suicide touches places most other songs can't), but I would recommend that you listen to all of Badmotorfinger and Superunknown several times just for the sheer joy of exploring this most excellent musical force. Then explore everything else they've done. It's all good, but you gotta start somewhere!
You can't go wrong with Soundgarden and neither can you go wrong with Obituary. Come on Richard, get Mr Judson into Obituary the legends of the Florida death metal scene. You guys are awesome. Love the analyzes afterwards. Keep them coming please🤘
Superunknown is one of the greatest albums ever. It’s jammed packed full of great songs. To me Fresh Tendrils is the stand out track. I highly recommend that one.. or maybe a whole album review would be great too
I love that you found this gem! First I will say that the 2nd half of the superunknown album is like Chris was talking to me. Love all those songs. Second, guitar solos could have been Chris or Kim. And I don't know well enough to know usually when that happens. When Kim goes off, then it's obvious as Kim as a unique expression. And last, Rick Beato interviewed Michael Beinhorn who produced superunkown. That was an interesting interview and definitely shed a lot of light on that process. Thank you for this!
This song blew my mind the first time I heard it in about 2002, and it still just melts me every time I hear it. Cornell is one of my biggest influences as a songwriter, and this one's a masterpiece. Loved what you guys said about Kim Thayil, too. To me there was always something angular or a little eschew about his soloing, in all the best ways. He's always coming in with a rhythm that is just a bit off from what the band is playing, or with strange note choices that - on paper - SHOULDN'T work, but with him it always does. It's like he's the only one who can see that there's an optical illusion, so he's able to break the rules in a way that nobody else could. For a song that scratches the same kind of musical itch as this song, I'd recommend "Searching With My Good Eye Closed" from the Badmotorfinger album (1991). For a less-riffy song that taps into the same vibe, I'd recommend the album closer from Superunknown, "Like Suicide". To my mind, that was the greatest song Cornell ever wrote.
Man that was a great conversation. Might be the most I've ever thought about that song before. And some Kim Thayil love, hell yea. That opening riff took me from 'yeah i know some Soundgarden songs' to being INTO them, full stop, tip to taint. It's a worthwhile rabbit hole to go down! *Richard* - I feel like our tastes are similar. Think you guys would really dig "Mailman," "Like Suicide," and "Superunknown" (among...everything else). Kim has said that his Indian DNA comes out in his playing for tones and modal scales. He’s also a huge fan of Tony Iommi, Ace Frehley and Johnny Ramone.
A lot of people are gonna recommend their earlier material, but despite it being their "hit" album I really do think Superunknown is also their best. The sludgy, heavy guitar work from Chris and Kim is SO good paired with his vocals. Try a couple of the non-singles, like "Limo Wreck", "Mailman", or the title track. Just perfect. Thanks for diving deep into this one, guys!
That song gives my shivers down my back whenever I hear it but that era was so saturated with amazing music imagine being 13/14 pre internet liking girls liking sports and not enough time for all of the good music but sound garden was one of them.
