Dominions 5 Basic Nation Analysis - LA Phlegra

  • Honestly, I can't believe this took me so long. LA Phlegra is a fascinating nation - one of the most lopsided nations in the game, featuring a playstyle where most of the nation ends up more or less subordinated to their immensely powerful supercombatants. Phlegra constantly ends up resource-bound due to their extremely resource intensive troops - particularly the slaves, who cost very little by way of gold or recpoints - until the Laestrygonians arrive at which point income plummets and gold becomes very limited due to the Tyrants' extremely high cost. But still. . . they're worth it.

    The Phlegrans are not a Nation with super-combatants, they are super-combatants with a nation.

    The Phlegra nations are honestly among my favorites, but LA Phlegra is such a breath of fresh air next to all the blood and communion based nations in the Late Age. Something you would expect in the Early Age like a super combatant concentric nation just stands out so much.

    I find it hillarious, that in an age of knights and heavy infantry and magical decline...
    This is a EA nation, a solid EA nation in the Late age...

      To be fair, they were in decline, sealed away under a mountain and all that stuff. THe Tyrants just decided to not stay sealed away :)

    You know what would be interesting? Playing Phlegra in a disciples game teaming up with Ulm. I feel like there's a lot of interesting synergy there:
    - Neither is *that* invested in having a bless, and the bless they'd like is similar.
    - They both want similar scales, and an awake expander if possible.
    - Ulm provides great cheap crafting for the Laestrygonians.
    - Phlegra can plant their priests in Ulm's blood hunting provinces.

    Mass crossbows+flaming arrows can be DEVASTATINGLY effective of used right with a good, solid wall of melee guys to hold the enemy in place.

    GeneralConfusion and Dastactic posting Phlegra videos within 24 hours of each other? some kind of LA meta conspiracy

      IIRC Das's video made GC realise he hadn't make a proper Nation video, so they are connected

    I'd probably try rolling around having broken into death or blood later in the game (and probably blood) since the one resource you're primarily limited on is cap turns. I'd be fascinated to see a pretender who notches up a vampire lord ramp, who are all blood hunting like crazy in a province with a ton of priests and nearly no patrollers.

      It's also an interesting concept to me to potentially empower some of your oppressors in blood, giving them access to the restore fatigue spell and whatnot.

    Can you make a repel build that repels 8 attacks cuz there are supper-combatants that have better defense and attack skill.

    • @GeneralConfusionPlays
      @GeneralConfusionPlays  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You can't repel Laestrygonians, because they berserk. Once they've gone berserk they automatically pass further morale rolls, including the ones caused by repel.

    So blesses do affect the Pretender itself? I'd read online that they didn't!

    • @Sorrac0001
      @Sorrac0001 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They didn't in dom4, in dom5 you get the benefits of your bless automatically, but only if your pretender is fighting within your dominion. Sacred units will also be automatically blessed if fighting with your pretender, but again, only in your own dominion.

    and then the lystrigonians get murdered by 10-15 ulm gaurdians, those things basicly shut them down.

    • @GeneralConfusionPlays
      @GeneralConfusionPlays  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not really? Ghoul Guardians hit hard but they also die pretty easily to Laestrygonian attacks, and the anti-sacred effect of their weapons won't trigger because Laestrygonian Tyrants are not sacred.

    • @hartzaden
      @hartzaden 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GeneralConfusionPlays your the only one who i have ever seen use them without shrouds GC, the only person, every other time i have seen them is with some sort of bless made for them + shrouds

    • @GeneralConfusionPlays
      @GeneralConfusionPlays  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hartzaden It's a perfectly valid way to play them, but not necessary really. Especially since awake expanders were increased in price I would tend to not take a bless as LA Phlegra. But even if you did? Soul Vortex will put a serious hurt on Ghoul Guardians, and if the Phlegra player is really worried about it they can just have the Tyrant spend a few rounds summoning Earth Elementals to trample the Guardians first.

    Would it be viable to go for an awake blood god, hunt your capital and then empower your priests to be your blood mages?
    Obviously you would be lot weaker at blood than actual blood nations but the priests ability seems destined for blood hunting

    • @mr.fantastic7756
      @mr.fantastic7756 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very ineffective especially when matched against true blood nations. Now if you want to break into blood on the side that's a different story. But to commit your pretender to it? Eh.

    • @Madhattersinjeans
      @Madhattersinjeans 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn't blood hunt the capital at all.
      You could expand with the pretender and then pick a decent province to blood hunt in once that's done though.

    Does LA phlegra not have any national spells?

    • @GeneralConfusionPlays
      @GeneralConfusionPlays  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Honestly, I forgot to discuss them just because they're not super important. LA Phlegra has all the same national spells as MA Phlegra, but all the same problems with them - many can only be cast by Laestrygonians, who you don't want to have sitting around in your forts casting spells, and the others - like Gigantomachia - aren't very valuable. Two potential exceptions are Sow Dragon's Teeth - which is a good combat summon - and Bind Keres, which can potentially if you have a ton of N sitting around to cast Gift of Reason get you some blood mages.
