I’m seeing so many alarming and misinformed comments regarding ADN prepared nurses. As a BSN travel nurse I can tell y’all straight up that ADN nurses are not going anywhere and have job opportunities galore. Let me address some things that I’m seeing in these comments.
1. “BSN nurses are better at patient care.” Not at all. Both BSN & ADNs sit for the SAME exact NCLEX exam that determines if you are a safe nurse and able to work as an RN. If ADNs were less knowledgeable than why would they sit for the same NCLEX exam as BSN students?
2. “ADNs can’t get jobs.” Well we have a nursing shortage in the MILLIONS and it’s only growing. Plus the BSN only propaganda has been pushed since the late 1960’s and ADNs are still thriving.
3. “Magnet hospitals only hire BSNs.” No they do not. Every hospital I’ve traveled to that says it on their website is the opposite IRL. I’ve never been to a hospital that actually only exclusively hires BSNs, even though it says it on their website. Like I said previously, we have a high nursing shortage and these hospitals can’t afford to be nitpicking.
4. “BSN nursing program is 4 years.” No. There is no nursing program that is actually 4 years. It takes 4 years at university because you’ll be taking 2 years of related and unrelated prerequisites like history before you can apply to the actual nursing program. Most universities actually have accelerated nursing programs that are 16-18 months instead of 2 full years. So yes ADN and BSN nurses both attend a 2 year nursing program (unless said program is accelerated.)
5. The only difference is really leadership classes. That’s why when you bridge for your BSN you’ll just be taking leadership themed classes that you can knock out in about a year. These classes are common sense and self paced. And no, it doesn’t make you a better nurse because it is irrelevant to actual patient care. Hence why this material is NOT tested on the NCLEX.
6. “You make way more as a BSN.” Most places I’ve worked through contract, the BSN nurses only made $0.25 - 0.50 more an hour... maybe $1 more in some locations. But it’s really not much of a pay difference overall.
I’m sure I’m missing some, and I’ve typed this whole thing on mobile so I’m sure there are some heavy grammar mistakes but idc.
I have worked all over the United States, and contracted through numerous companies and I’ve had first hand experience with this whole ADN vs BSN fight and I’m OVER IT. So please stop bashing ADN nurses, when you have no clue what you’re even talking about!
Moral of my rant... if you pass the NCLEX than you are a RN and that’s one hell of an achievement!
Yessss🙌🙌 I 100% agree with you. There is only 1 NCLEX for Rn’s, and it may be harder to get a job as an ADN, but not impossible! I can Just talk from my experience but probably more then have my classmates in 2020 graduating class have all ready gotten jobs, or have had jobs waiting for them at a hospital that has been magnet since 2003
Elizabeth Marie Yes exactly! At the end of the day we all have to sit for the same NCLEX and that is what determines if we are competent & ready to practice on the floor! I’ve worked with some AMAZING ADNs that have taught me so much throughout the years, and I’ve never once thought of myself as better than them just because I have my BSN. In the real world of nursing it really just doesn’t matter, a nurse is a nurse! 💕
Exactly! Well put. Im just curious when you started travel nursing how long did it take you to get your first assignment? Im very interested but not sure how long of experience ill need before being able to obtain an assignment?
Christina Emerson I personally worked L&D for about 2 years before I started traveling. Some agencies will allow you to start traveling with only 1 year of experience, and that works for some nurses but I had to be honest with myself that I needed more time.
It’s almost like being thrown to the wolves when it comes to travel nursing. They expect you to know your stuff inside & out. You get maybe one day of orientation when it comes to learning the ropes of the hospital, but other than that you are on your own.
So whenever you feel confident on your own and do not feel like you are jeopardizing your license, than I would say start looking into different agencies!
I honestly hop around to different agencies all the time. I just compare & contrast what they are offering and take the best deal for me.

This was so amazingly informative! I was battling between ADN and BSN and truthfully finances play a huge role being that I already have a BS from another university and my local community college is so much more affordable for the ADN program. Im very excited for the path! Thanks again for this breakdown! Definitely solidified my choice!
Im a medical assistant at the moment and ill be in school for ADN! This is a better choice for me because i cant do BSN for 4 years just cause I want to work as a nurse after ADN which only takes like 1-2 years. As im getting my experience as an ADN, I can go to school for BSN only for 2 years. Idk if anyone is thingking the same but atleast while youre at school finishing your BSN, youll be making good money already.
That's what my plan is as well. I start ADN school in the fall, and after graduating and passing the NCLEX, I hope that I am able to find a job, so that I can start working while obtaining my BSN and eventually MSN.
I decided to take this same path. I am also a medical assistant but I do clinical research and getting tons of experience.

Do you go to a community college for the first two years? And if you do where do you go after for 2 more years???

@@taxko9768 Getting an ADN fully online is impossible, sorry. BUT after you get your ADN, you can go into an RN to BSN program, which can be fully online. I hope that this helps!! There are tons of colleges that offer RN to BSN programs, which you can look up on google for one that is best for you.
I'm getting my ADN as well! Here where I am in NC, ADNs get hired no problem. Most of the student who just graduated already have jobs secured in great departments like ER, ICU, NICU. I really hate when people say you won't get hired as an ADN. Best of luck to you!

I live in Maine, and for my graduating class they are offering 2 years of free community college, definitely considering my getting my ADN first, and then letting a hospital paying for my BSN.

It really depends on the program as far as cost. I'm in an accelerated, top rated BSN program and it's around $24,000 for the entire 16mo program. I did the nursing path pre-reqs through the community college to save $$, but chose the BSN nursing program just so that I don't have to worry about needing to go back to school again unless I choose to get my master's degree. I personally think the best way to choose a program is their NCLEX pass rate.

I wanted to do accelerated bsn but want to work at the same time. Is that possible or it is hard to work and study at the same time while in absn program?
What school did you go to
I disagree with choosing schools based on NCLEX pass rates. My mom is a nursing professor and the main reason some programs have 95+ pass rates is because they prescreen students before they get into the program or just won’t let them sit for boards until they do well on practice exams. Then you have programs that don’t care about having a super high pass rate and just let students who don’t put in as much preparation take the exam. Now some schools are definitely better at preparing but that is often not a reflection of pass rates because like I said there are these other factors at play.
This is the most helpful video I've watch so far explaining the steps towards an ADN... I start my spring semester in January and i am both excited and nervous.. ( Thanks for the video!!) would love to see more.
I love your channel! I'm currently taking my prerequisites at a local community college here in New York. The program is super competitive for the same reasons you mentioned (2 year versus 4 year as well as cost) so the pressure is ON to have a 4.0. There's also an entrance exam which is weighed at 50% of their decision to admit you into the program. I just finished finals week and I'm so nervous! I tried my best, which was difficult because this is my first semester back in college after getting my Bachelors in childhood ed/special ed ten years ago. I'm taking chemistry during the summer semester so I really only have nine days to relax a bit before I'm back at it! I'm hoping it goes well as distance learning is not something I am super used to. Anyway, thank you for the video and I wish you well!!
Very concise and eloquent explanation of this commonly misunderstood concept that can be sooooo annoying to explain sometimes. One thing I will add is that, outside of the hospital setting the BSN is almost never required at any point. Love your videos! - Fellow ADN, RN !
Hi Elizabeth. This is why I am in the pre-nursing program at a community college right now. The bonus for me is that my school also offers the BSN online. I am of wife and have kids so the cost effective route is good for me. I have to drive an hour to school but its worth saving a lot of money.

I definitely think you should look into WGU (Western Governors University) for your RN to BSN (if you haven't already). its competency based so you can accelerate and finish the program within a single term which is 6 months at WGU. Its roughly $3,500 per term. You can start in any month of the year and its accredited. Ive heard a lot of great things about the University.

Great plan! I'm currently at WGU online for my BSN. Three months after starting, I'm in my third class... and I'm taking my time lol Plus, the BSN is like a breeze compared to the ADN! Go for it, you can definitely do it 🙌🏽

The only difference that I have seen between ADN and BSN is your ability to move up into management as management at some facilities requires a Bachelor’s. Great Vid! I’m in the application process now. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it will go smoothly good luck on your NCLEX!

For me it was the financial aspect. The BSN program in my area was like 15 thousand more a year. After I finish my ADN next May, I plan on going to a local RN to BSN program at a reputable university that was a tuition discount agreement and will only take 12 months to finish.

I work at a Magnet Hospital and they prefer BSN because of accreditation. I also know we get paid more for a BSN. But the truth of it all is that when a patient needs their nurse, they do not know or care if they're nurse is BSN or ADN. a nurse is a nurse.

Also might I add if an hospital only hire BSN then it's not that they are paying more because they only hire BSN so that's jist their pay.
@@CriminalJusticeExpert that’s not necessarily true… if the industry average in an area is $30/hr. for an ADN, but nurses at that hospital with BSNs make $32/hr. you know that they are paying their nurses more. I don’t know how true that is, but your statement that a hospital that only hires BSNs can’t pay more was not correct.

Nursing School in norway: after you finish High school, you Apply for nursing school (batchelors degree in nursing) which is 3 years. Half of this have to be clinical work. After three years you turn in Your bachelors assignment, and then you have to work for two years before you can study a specialty (pediatric, neurological, cardiac, ER ...) which is 2 years.
us nurses are more qualified than us in the uk and Europe. they are not specialized and can work multiple different areas
Granddaughter 12/17/2020 graduated from a 11 month 8 day ABSN course with a 4.0 GPA, she won the award for highest GPA in the U of Houston undergraduate. She hs been hired at Houston Methodist, a magnet hospital.

Thanks for shedding some light on this topic! For some reason so many people think it’s not possible to get a job with a ADN at a hospital, especially a Magnet Status hospital but it is!! Good for you for saving some money! I’m taking the same route and I’m so happy with my choice.
I live in Florida and I start my ADN program at my local state college this August... but I’m going to be applying to a concurrent program at UCF where starting my second semester of ADN classes, I’ll start BSN classes online. So I’ll finish with my BSN 2 semesters after getting my ADN. I would consider just stopping at an ADN if I were planning on staying a nurse in Florida. I know A LOT of nurses here that only have an ADN and have been super successful and it doesn’t really hinder their ability to move up at their job. But I’m planning on moving to LA after school, where my boyfriend has a ton of family that are nurses, and they’ve all recommended getting a BSN because it’s so competitive out there and the best jobs are at Magnet hospitals.

@@Beserker-dw4ic Definitely! UF's RN to BSN program is completely online, so you can do it from anywhere in Florida. It looks like one of the only requirements is a GPA or 2.8 or higher in all of your NUR classes from your ADN program. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! First off congratulations on graduating nursing school!! I'm not sure how widely this is done, but there are some 2 year BSN programs. I'm currently in one and there are DEFINITE pros and cons to this as well. We go by 10 week quarters (so yes during summer as well which is a little sad haha) with 2 weeks off in December and a week off in May. Tuition is pretty decent but definitely worth it since it's only 2 years instead of 4. There are tons of options out there just make sure to think about what works best for you!!

Great video! Wonderful information. I do have to say that there is a large pay gap between ADNs and BSNs, in Los Angeles at least.
Here in Ontario Canada there’s: BScN which takes 4 full years of nursing classes (nursing classes and clinic starting in first year) that leads to you being a Registered Nurse. Then there’s a 2 year Practical Nursing program from community colleges that leads to you being a Registered Practical Nurse. Those are the only two options here! RN’s make approx $30-50/hr whereas RPN’s make approx $25-35!

Hi Elizabeth, thank you for explaining. I’m in AZ and started my BSN journey in January 2024. LPN vs RN vs BSN has always been misinformation. This was a smart route financially.
Thank you for your information. I am going to take the first semester of prerequisite requirements in this fall, 2021. I asked 2 community colleges they suggested me 2 different paths. One suggested me to take all General Education classes (completing 60 units)in community colleges then transfer to university to get BSN. The other one told me directly go for those prerequisite requirements for nursing program=> ADN=> BSN later.
I was a lot confused between these two information, thank to your video, I am pretty clear and get more confidence about ADN.
Wow 80k for a BSN? That’s insane! I’ve heard of those outrageous prices but mostly for a PRIVATE school. The school I’m going, to which is a great university (Texas Tech), the entire program is 24k for 16 MONTHS fast track accelerated BSN. I personally know ADN nurses that make way less money than BSN nurses. BSN nurses have more legal document responsibility. I personally chose getting my BSN because my long term goal is a MSN. I just couldn’t see myself going through nursing school AGAIN for a BSN and then again for a MSN. I’m really into leadership roles and I feel I wouldn’t have that with an ADN. Oh and the hospitals of Texas Tech do offer loan repayments for BSN student. BSN was a no brainer for me. Any-who, being a nurse is a huge accomplishment congratulations on your achievement and I wish you the best of luck! 🥰❤️

@@sophiefredrickson9370 No growth, you have to jump from job to job to get higher pay, you will only be an assistant with a bachelor’s and you need a supervisor. The supervisors I haven’t had the best experiences with and they don’t respect you because your an assistant… The caseloads are huge I currently have 80 patients and I still only make $55,000..When I made 80,000 I worked about 60 hours a week to get there…If you do not plan on getting a masters don’t bother and the masters programs are extremely difficult to get into..well at least when I tried, things have changed some…I now have my MBA and going to be a nurse because of the flexibility of the field, growth and of course the salary..
I am thinking of doing getting my adn at a community college and then maybe do online for adn to bsn...can you do travel nursing with just a adn or do you need a bsn??
I chose the dual degree through our local community college which I chose to do the BSN route which was only one semester longer than the associates. If I would’ve chosen to do the ADN only it would’ve taken a whole extra year to get my BSN so I think its definitely the way to go. That’s just my opinion. It’s not fun seeing all your friends graduate when you have an extra semester haha but after just graduating and looking back at it I’m so happy I chose the route I did. Can you work as a graduate nurse (GN) in Ohio?
If I can offer a suggestion there’s American Sentinel University that I went through for my BSN this is completely recently.100% online and my work paid it for me and that was $13,000 for the 10 classes. I’m just giving an idea of the cost for a BSN online.

I am from the U.K. and the nursing degrees are very different. You have to take a 3year bachelors of science in nursing degree. But here you have to chose your chosen field from mental health,learning disability,midwifery,children’s and adult.

To get into an ADN program do you have to take certain classes before applying or does it all depend on the community college?
depends on the college some require you to have certain gpa and high school classes while other require college classes to be taken beforehand. since programs are competitive people tend to take general ed classes before applying to have more of a chance in the selection process.
I feel like it just has to do with location. I live near philly and you basically cant walk into a hospital without a bsn even in the smaller suburb hospitals. congrats on graduating!! im excited to see your new nurse journey!
Really ADN is common hear in California but they tend to push you to get a BSN within 4 years of working for the employer
@@Dbf1339 I was SO surprised when I found nursing yt and everyone was getting their adns. People in the comments would bash bsn programs and brag about having no debt but its literally not possible in the northeast (in my opinion). In Philly, theres so many hospitals and universities so theres thousands of bsn nurses competing for jobs. My mind was literally blown bc getting a bsn was never a big deal around here!!

@@brichristine13 hear in California both are difficult to get into but it's a lot cheaper to go to community college here the 4 years cost a lot more so it's a cheaper start but they do want BSN in the long run
In Quebec it's sooooo different. You have two ways :
First : 2 years of health sciences + 3 years of bachelor THEN boards (so you can practice after 5 years as RN)
Two : 3 years of nursing school (but it's like pre-req + nursing school at the same time so hard as fuck) THEN boards
(so you can practice after 3 years as RN).
If you go straight to nursing school, you can become RN and then do 2 years of uni for the bachelors instead of 3 after.
Both route are 5 years if you wan't the bachelor. BUT if you chose the second way, you can practice after 3.
For me it's the best one, I chose that. :)
Also, you are paid a LOT more with the bachelor here, like a lot. And you can also have more '' desk '' job or leadership position.

Is the online BSN easy?
Loving the video so far. In Texas nurses with BSN get paid more than RN at most jobs. Ofcourse there are some that are paid the same but you’re likely to get a higher pay with bsn
Here where I live(in Europe) there is only one way to become RN and it's through BSN program. You need to have a BSN diploma to practice as a nurse, and the program is 3,5 years long.
I just graduated from cosmetology school; during covid my mom begged me not to go into nursing because of all that was going on in the world. my heart is still set on going medical but I don't have the means financially. should I just go for it anyways/ is there any way to do less classes per semester while I work full time?
That’s very interesting. Getting your bachelors in Ontario, Canada is way different. LPN’s ( licensed practicing nurse 2 year) cannot do as much as ( RN’s 4 years) and RN’s make a lot more money than LPN’s do

I’m from Ontario, Canada! To get your Bachelors degree you need to go to university for 4 years and then take your RN-nclex to become an RN. The other option is going to college for 2 years and then take your RPN-nclex to become an RPN! There is a difference between college and uni here and an RN will make more money and have a larger scope of practice compared to an RPN! The college RPN program is cheaper for sure compared to uni RN programs, but you can work in many more areas as an RN. We do have bridging programs for RPNs to go back to school for 2-3 years to become an RN. I chose to just go right into uni and become an RN and I’ve now been working for 8 months ☺️

My mom is currently a nurse & she is telling me it is not a good idea! I disagree. Yes, I lack experience but I currently in CNA school & a nine class at a University but I plan on attending a ADN program that's at a Tech school & then take a RN to BSN degree program online back @ my original university once I graduate the ADN program. I think it will be financially smarter & allow me to get my degree quicker & faster. My mom also says that some of the ADN nurses she works with know more skills........but she also says that new BSN nurses know more skills than she knew! I am conflicted. I don't know whether to do the ADN program or get my BSN! I don't want to make the wrong decision

I live in SC and I applied for the ADN program but it’s so hard to be accepted because they have so MANY requirements they make it so hard for you to be accepted.
Hey, i have a question! After graduating highschool, can you go in an ADN program, and be a nurse at 20? Are there any pre-reqs that you will have to do to get into the ADN program? Will I have to do 2 yrs of prerequisites and then 2 yrs of the ADN program, which will be 4 yrs.
My school (Palm Beach State College) has some prerequisites for the nursing program. So for me I have to take Anatomy 1 and 2 with labs, Microbiology with lab, Stats, English, a couple more gen eds and then an entrance exam, called the HESI A2. I am willing to bet that it depends on the school you want to go to. Hope this helped!
So if you are starting from the beginning you will still have to do the 2 years of General Ed PLUS 2 years for your ADN PLUS the other 2 years for a BSN? is that correct?
@@elijahhernandez1482 I'm only a nursing school student but you don't have to get your ADN to apply for a BSN program, you just have to take whatever the prereq's are for the BSN program. This will vary by school, but an ADN isn't a requirement for any traditional (not accelerated) BSN program I've seen, it's just like going to a community college for 2 years and transferring to a 4 year university for any other degree. The length of the BSN program may be longer than 2 years though, when I was looking into doing that, some of the BSN programs at my state universities were 3 years long after transferring from a community college. Hope this makes sense :)

the truth is it takes more like 3 years unless you are taking 5 -6 classes every semester which can be a bit challenging especially if you work but if you got it you got it
The difference in BSN and ADN in my state is that ADN RNs can’t be charge nurses, and they can’t expand above being just a “RN”
How long was your nursing program? I know you said 2 years, but was the 2 years including nursing school or did that include pre reqs?

Prerequisites take like 2 years and then you do the nursing program which is 2 years

so prerequisites + adn program will take 4 years, than obtain your rn. after this you would still have to go back to get your bsn which takes 2yrs for prerequisites + 2yr nursing program (4 years). am i right? so the bsn be is a lot faster?
Not exactly, most ADN programs now incorporate the needed classes to obtain a BSN. So you’ll take pre reqs, do the ADN program, take NCLEX, then you can go straight into a BSN program. Doing a RN-BSN program can be done in as little as 11 months depending on the school.
Hello there, so adn and bsn are pretty much the same "scope of practice" - then when someone goes for their bsn, are they learning ALL NEW nursing things -other than adn class work

Have you looked into online RN-BSN schools? I’ve heard of people getting their BSN’s in at least 2 years after an ADN
It’s possible to get it in as little as 6 months , Ik someone that got it in 4 months and 3 weeks at Cappella University online Flex path and the school is CCNE accredited !
My recommendation for RN to BSN is to do it online and don’t spend a lot of money to get your BSN ... a BSN doesn’t get you more money at your current job as an RN , but it gives you a lot of opportunities to where you can work as an RN which is a plus. You can get a BSN for less than 10 grand. Shop around and look for a school you can get it for less than 10 grand !!!
Shellone Beckford interesting. just for my ADN. the RN-BSN program from the same school is 40 grand for 10 months 😬
But doesn’t it take more time if we take from ADN and BSN? In my state, CC nursing school takes 2 years and state university for RN to BSN program takes another 2years. For people who have post bachelors degree, there are post baccalaureate nursing programs taking 1.5year to get BSN. It is much expensive, though. I think it is saving money vs saving time.
