  • Directed & edited by Marcus Howard. Dedicated to all the grandchildren of Patrick McHugh. At the heart of Dublin’s War of Independence, a 1916 Dundalk Volunteer master munitions manufacturer, developed and produced sorely needed supplies of ammunition for the fight against British rule in Ireland. Directly involved from 1911, Patrick McHugh set up Dundalk’s Fianna Eireann and participated in the 1916 Rising. After 1916, Michael Collins recommended him for the position of munitions manufacturer at 198 Parnell Street. McHugh helped develop the trench mortar gun, manufactured grenades and worked on developing a sub-machine gun. In Talbot Street, he forewarned of the murder of Sean Treacy. Taking the anti-Treaty side, he not only supplied 2,000 grenades to the Four Courts, but set up a munitions plant there. Subsequently he set up a munitions plant in Cork. Three of his children, two of whom are now deceased, tell the story of a man with deep convictions who put his love of Ireland before personal gain.
