  • Directed and edited by Marcus Howard. One of the biggest prison breaks of the 1916-23 period took place in Dundalk Gaol in 1922 with over 100 prisoners escaping from their captors. Frank Aiken's Fourth Northern Division were holding a neutral response in respect to the Treaty until their hand was forced by members of the Pro Treaty. One of the most successful and larger actions by the Anti Treaty during the Civil War is also recounted in this documentary with the retaking of Dundalk Military Barracks. The sons of Frank Aiken, John McCoy, Eiver Monaghan, Michael O'Hanlon, Pearse O'Hanrahan along with historian and author John Dorney tell the story of the men of the Fourth Northern Division. Many details of this story are only now being told for the first time along with numerous unseen and rare photos.

When I was in primary school, my teacher would often mention her relative who helped with a prison escape. She was Mrs Monaghan ...

Can you imagine a group of committed determined brave men all fighting for the same just cause it's inspiring sometimes I wish I was there in the thick of it with them but I don't think I'd be as brave

Remember Eiver Monaghan coming to my father's home in Newry with my grandfather for John McInerny I.R.A. funeral about 1950/2. The last time I spoke to Eiver was at my father's funeral who is buried just a few graves from Eiver in Poyntzpass, Co Armagh on his headstone it says O.C. Fourth Northern Division I.R.A. Both Frank Aiken and Eiver Monaghan were with Michael Collins in Armagh when Collins gave my grandfather a man's leather wallet as a token of their friendship.
