This talk by Marcus Howard was first given to an audience of 1916 Relatives Association members in the Mansion House, Dublin, in September 2023. It is an absolutely fantastic audio visual eve. You will learn things you never knew about two men who's names are know by every Irish person but whose history is known by few. When Marcus gave this talk, you could hear a pin drop. Litterally rapt attention from the audience. A fantastic event. Thoroughly recommended.

As an Englishman I don't know what you mean by continue to fight? The Irish had their change to stand by the 1916 Proclamation on 7 Jan 1922, but sadly they didn't, even agreeing to have the man in who's name the execution were allow to happen as the Irish Free States "Head of State" with all the women of the Dail voting against the treaty, god bless them. You should be so proud of the 276 women who took part in the Rising and who have fought for Irish Freedom down the generations.

What a load of delusional rubbish, there is no irish ireland, ireland has been fully bought and paid for and is now fully owned by the EU. look at your towns and cities, teeming with immigrants. You will soon be outnumbered in your own land. They fought and died for nothing, betrayed by their own government.

The last time I spoke to Eiver was at my father's funeral who is buried just a few graves from Eiver in Poyntzpass, Co Armagh on his headstone it says O.C. Fourth Northern Division I.R.A. Both Frank Aiken and Eiver Monaghan were with Michael Collins in Armagh when Collins gave my grandfather a man's leather wallet as a token of their friendship.

Let's have it right. These were fresh faced new trained recruits. Completely in the dark about where they were. They actually thought they had landed on France until they got off the boat. Indeed the volunteers were new to it all too but these soldiers were clueless and poorly led. It was a well prepared ambush and well executed with a lot of courage. But let's not pretend they were fighting the Tans, they were all very young and green kids with absolutely no experience. Let me add that the cause of self determination was a just cause, but all sides must be pitied as they were all victims of the controlling classes in Westminster.

It has been said that the first casualty of war is the truth. Closely allied, of course, to the value of propaganda. This Englishman has had a long term interest in this tragic conflict when the very word itself summed things up over so many "fronts". Many books about that time and place in history have been read with deep intererest and this contribution provides a very useful addition. From personal knowledge, i can say that the information provided for the murder of Capt. William Newberry (note the correct spelling of his surname) is not entirely accurate, nor the subsequent statement provided by one of the leaders of the IRA squad responsible for the killing. It is now most likely that from evidence available thereafter, not least from the facts surrounding the later disposal of the murdered man's will, that his wife was not the woman (with child) present as described. Her tragedy - and that of her child - is compounded by not being able to identify her and put her soul to rest. Capt. Newberry was a military lawyer with no obvious (or reported) connection with intelligence work. Ergo, It seems more logical that he was targeted because of courts martial prosecution(s) against IRA accused, and perhaps good at his job? The account given by Mrs Woodcock later in a magazine - and available in book form - gives a very real impression of what is was like from a particualr point of view to live in Dublin at that hazardous time when sudden death could come from some civilian who would vanish from view into an obliging crowd. She highlighted the presence of revolvers beside the dining places at the dinner table when invited for a meal as a guest. That is probably the most vivid vignette of a dangerous daily existence then.
