Nitride treatment is not a "coating" that's confusing when compared with actual coating applications such as chrome lining which adds material the the surface. Nitriding does not add anything to the surface but infuses carbon and nitrogen into the steel itself. Only way to remove a nitride treatment would be to cut back the steel as deep as the treatment had infused.
