RJ M sorry to reply for such an old comment..but have you seen Ripleys Game? Great movie and a perfect role for actor like John Malkovich, and for his voice...talking about calm and threatening.
arbitterm Me too. Can't stand the voice of that guy in my voicemail and videos, it makes me feel sick. I think "damn, it's no wonder nobody likes that guy, with a voice like that". However, I can't be anyone else but me no matter how hard I pretend otherwise....
His voice always makes me feel that it's either from a very thoughtful and calm super villain, or a spiritual guide giving out wisdom or life's secrets.
I still don't get it... Dude is born and bred in the States... but still when I hear his speech it sounds to me like a person that has mastered the english language reasonably recent. Love the dude... one of the few that made it big but still likes to pick up smaller parts... I loved his character in RED for example.
if you haven't seen it, watch "Ripley's Game" (sequel to Talented Mr. Ripley) John Malkovich is intense & has a sort of dark humor about things Ripley's involved with.
shaolinwisdom Ripley's Game is a "sequel" but keep in mind Malkovich's performance is what caused the prequel with Matt Damon (correction: Barry Pepper) to be made. The 1977 film, 'The American Friend,' with Dennis Hopper & Bruno Ganz, is another version of, 'Ripley's Game,' based off Patricia Highsmith's book. I agree with you regarding Malkovich's take on the character regardless of whether or not it matches the book. micglou You are describing newbies struggling over the correct words, or proper phrases to use, where as Malkovich is deciding which possible path he desires taking. I can see how the cadence is similar, but they are also very dissimilar at their root cause. John Malkovich could say the same sentence to you in 64 different ways equally as fluent. He's enjoying the choice longer than your ears desire being made aware of.
***** Simple case of timeline fatigue. Living the future before the past arrives plays squirrely games with one's head. I stand corrected concerning the actor I mentioned. Thanks for pointing that out, as I loathe misinformation. Barry Pepper is who I mixed up with Matt Damon. The 2005 prequel called, 'Ripley Under Ground,' which would not have been made without Malkovich's successful performance, is what I meant to cite. The films are released out of order from the novels. Ripley's Game was to be the last film, or they would have filmed them in sequence. They didn't even release 'Ripley's Game' in theatres outside of Europe. It was straight to DVD in USA. The Talented Mr. Ripley (Damon 1999), Ripley Under Ground (Pepper 2005), Ripley's Game (Malkovich 2002), is the proper order for the storyline. The final two novels, The Boy That Followed Ripley & Ripley Under Water, were never made into films. Although in 2009, BBC4 Radio created the entire sequence in order with Ian Hart as Ripley.
I found his voice a bit odd and unexpected at first, but it sounds...I don't know the word. I've heard people speak similar to him and they tend to be very artistic. It just sounds really great and intelligent.
Interestingly the classic pirate voice was actually made up by actor Robert Newton in order to portray Long John Silver in the 1950 Disney adaptation of Treasure Island. He did it by simply exaggerating his English West Country accent. So credited is he for inventing this now internationally famous voice that he is the patron saint of 'Talk like a pirate day' held on September 19.
I think he absolutely is the greatest actor. From “Of Mice and Men” to “Rounders”. Not a lot of people can take on such unique personas and seem to BECOME them.
Me, I honestly hate how he talks in space force, I cringe ever single time, it's hard to even watch. He pauses in between each word like he's reading the lines super slow, it's extremely obnoxious.
Mate that's what I love about it. Idk he just fits that role so perfectly and it really feels like he's a scientest who's taking time in what he's saying and just knows everything about everything.

John Malkovich has the most beautiful voice I've ever heard. I fell in love with his voice as a little girl, and now I'm 40, and the closest to a unique beautiful voice that I've encountered so far was my late husband's voice. And yet still it wasn't as beautiful as Malkovich's. His voice is what I think of when I imagine a man with a beautiful voice. Just love it!!
It'd be great to see him as a pirate with this belaboured, ever-elegant voice, while everyone around him is petrified in case he loses his temper. Which he never does. He's just always on the edge, and is more disappointed in them than angry, as he sees their potential for better villainy.
this is someone that the mold was broken when he was born/created, he reminds me of having the same charm and power over people as warner herzog, you could watch him do and/or say anything and never get bored by it.
