We are Ash and Dan and we're on a mission to visit 100 countries!
Join us today as we explore the centre of Shymkent, on Kazakhstan's silk road. We took an overnight train from Karaganda and finally reached the warmth of south Kazakhstan. Shymkent really impressed us with its beautiful parks, interesting architecture and don't get us started on the bread!!

This "pizza dough" is called Tandyr-nan. It's just bread and you can eat it with pretty much anything you like. Try it with sour cream.

You should taste "Kospa" (Коспа). It is national dessert with gentle creamy taste. You can find it in farm shops and bazaar.
And regarding "Court", most tasty "Court" - homemade, it's not so salty and more natural.

The "circle bread" you've just had is called Tandyr-nan ("Tandyr" is a clay dome shaped oven, and "Nan" is bread). You can it with everything, yet it goes well with butter, especially when Tandyr-nan is hot. You just break it and emjoy, what you did was the way we eat Tandyr-nan. Remember one very important thing in Qazaq culture regarding the Bread, you should not step over the Bread of anykind or put it on the ground, i.e. down to where your feet are. Also, if you see breaf laying on the ground you are to kindly pick it up and place it higher than your feet. Qazaqs honor Bread very much (of course, we DO NOT worship the Bread, but it is cultural thing to honor the Bread.)

The mentality of local residents is much better than in other regions of Kazakhstan. More educated, hospitable and benevolent people live in Shymkent.

Never ever mention the stupid "comedy" aka mockery film "Borat" to a kazakh person. It's really personal, cause we were trying to overcome the crisis of near poverty after the fall of USSR, but we were happy to be finally free from the rule of Russian empire. We wanted that freedom for so long, yet it didn't end without consequences. The intelligentsia of our people were wiped out by the previous soviet government so we had no choice of choosing any good political leaders except the only suitable candidate we had in the representation of Nursultan Nazarbaev. We were left with people holding political power only by association and help of that time Russia, even tho we separated, they still had their influence on us after the 500+ years of being their "colony". So we couldn't avoid the faulty government filled with traitors of their motherland, which eventually led to the state that our country is in today - corrupted, with so much wasted potential that we had, sad and dependent on our neighbours like Russia and communist China
