Just saw this in theaters and it’s a much superior film. It feels so much more fleshed out and realistic. It feels like it falls in line with the other films a little more seamlessly. Always loved this one and considered it a guilty pleasure but now I feel like it’s a legitimately good film that extends beyond just being something I love because I grew up watching it. Five out of five stars.

Part 5 is the one that needs major surgery. But I think Stallone won't touch it, mainly because he wouldn't want to be ruthless with extracting footage of his real life son Sage (Rocky Jr) who tragically died.

The original movie is great, and its exactly what audiences wanted back in the '80s, including that cheesy but amazing ending.
I think Stallone loves that cut, but he used his spare time during quarentine to basically adapt the movie to current times.
I'm just glad we have two equally good "versions" of Rocky IV, the more Sly, the better!

Honestly having seen this in theatres was magical. It was an experience. Idk if the cut itself was better than the original release as a whole but there were certainly parts that were better and welcome additions imo. Both fights in the film were SIGNIFICANTLY better as a whole. The pacing and editing was the biggest gripe I had. The dialogue goes unnaturally fast at times (they cut to the next line a little too quickly) and they spent way too much time recapping Rocky 3.

I have always had a guilty love for the original. But if we're talking canon, the director's cut is the better entry. Rocky, Apollo, Drago, even Ludmilla Drago...all their characters make more sense in future entries of the series with this version. I don't want to spoil it, but yeah, to say it humanizes characters is an understatement...it gives a film that was largely devoid of realism a Drago sized shot of it. Absolutely loved it. Fits big time in our current environment.

I have mixed feelings on this cut it’s still too short and feels rushed at times. Drago is more humanized which I’m also torn on because most of his intimidating presence is gone. But that sequence right before Drago vs rocky started was incredible he really captured that this is a global event kind of atmosphere. I’ve also watched the original about 100 times growing up so it was hard to adjust to the changes. But still really glad Stallone gave us this version.

Overall I loved what Stallone did. The scene between Rocky and Adrian before he leaves for Russia was really touching. The changes to Apollos fight were necessary. I loved that they made the scene with Rocky and Apollo in the dressing room a flashback. I wish Stallone had kept the original beginning, minus the robot. New beginning didn't transition well. Some of the editing seemed off. Some of the extra scenes, while I liked them, seemed like low quality takes that had to be used because they didn't have better ones. It does makes me wonder what kind of marvel Stallone could have created if he had gone this direction the first time around in 1985.

My favorite part of this new version is that Drago actually HAS a character now, and isn't just an emotionless wall for the hero to overcome. And the best part of it is that he doesn't really get many new lines of dialog; it's mostly all in his facial expressions.
Also, in the original version, Apollo says early on that despite his strength, his lack of experience makes him sloppy, but you never actually see that. In this new version, you actually do get a sense of that sloppy inexperience in the beginning of his fight with Apollo.
All in all, Drago definitely came out the most ahead in this version.

First things first, I am a HUGE fan of the Rocky franchise. That said...
I just saw this and boy am I torn. From the poorly edited & choppy opening sequences to the now completely out of place There's No Easy Way Out music video, Rocky v Drago has taken my least favorite Rocky film and made it my least favorite Rocky film, but with a catch... some scenes that felt rushed or that weren't even in the 1985 version are longer and wonderful. The characters of Adrian & Ivan are better this time around. Where as the characters of Ivan's wife & Paulie have been severely short shifted.
Apollo's fight with Ivan is completely changed. It is no longer a simple massacre, but a brutal poignant death of a beloved character. As for Rocky's fight with Ivan, I am not sure where I stand. It too is also different and perhaps maybe better. It's more of a savage brawl, but I would have to see it again to make my decision.
For all the changes Stallone made to all that still remains, in the end, I was disappointed by this new version. Sly really had a chance to make the best version of Rocky 4, but he didn't. I was expecting even more Bill Conti music. I was expecting less music videos. And even though he tries to make Rocky 4 more like the other Rocky films instead of the odd duck it has always been, he only half succeeds because the film has basically the same runtime as the original, which means he took out as much as he put in. Sadly, there's still a good movie in here trying to get out. Only now, though, it will be up to a fan edit to produce it.

Just watched it in the theatre and truthfully didn’t care for it . Maybe it’s because I’ve seen the original a hundred times and it’s etched in my head or maybe it just wasn’t necessary to change . I did like a few of the added scenes and dialog and character development but feel it could have been added without removing so much of the original . Drago didn’t feel as terrifying in this version , the cutting of the throwing the towel scene was strange and the first 20 minutes was way too rushed and odd .

  • @thad8909
    @thad8909 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

Having seen the original 100 times, I've been waiting for this for a few months. Quick reaction: The original is superior overall. This version feels more rushed and smaller like an indie film. Sometimes I felt like I was watching a soap opera. Some of the edits don't flow naturally and the sound mix doesn't sound quite right. That being said, I definitely enjoyed the extra scenes. I just can't for the life of me understand why that meant certain lines had to go. Why trade it off? Why not just combine and make the best of the best version possible? Did Stallone have a formal restriction on time?
    SPOILERS below:
    - I loved Apollo telling Rocky before going into the last round "For my family, please don't stop this fight. No matter what." But they cut his final "No matter what" that was in the theatrical cut that added that much more emphasis.
    - I hate how they took out Apollo's final "NO" before he was hit with the final lethal blow from Drago. Like seriously why?
    - Adrian's extra scenes again add so more emotional depth to her role in the film.
    - During the Hearts on Fire montage going into the last verse Rocky originally tears Drago's picture off the mirror and crumbles it. For some reason, they scrapped that in exchange to see Rocky jump rope some more. I mean c'mon, that is the new footage just for the sake of it.
    - During Rocky's victory speech he mentions Apollo dying, and the camera points to Drago lowering his head seemingly in remorse. Great added scene.
    - The final fight definitely had some edits that seemed out of place. But I loved Drago's extra lines. But the final moment when Rocky daps up Drago as he exits the ring is a game-changer for me. I understand why it wasn't in the original but it adds more context and depth to their relationship. I wanna say if this is considered canon I feel it contradicts the way Rocky looks at Drago during Creed 2 a bit though.

    • @silverguard8105
      @silverguard8105 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

They had to cut out Apollo's final "No" because Rocky was going to throw in the towel. There was no hesitation in what he was doing. I prefer Rocky being late throwing in the towel vs him letting his best friend die.

    • @thad8909
      @thad8909 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@silverguard8105 Fair point but his old manager still said “Throw the towel” so there was an opportunity to leave at least one NO in there. It was a super fast ending when you compare it to the original.
I also kind of think whether he was late vs “letting” his friend die are one in the same. He says “I let it happen” at the funeral and that would seem to imply that’s cause he didn’t throw in the towel at all. But throwing in the towel (late) in the original would still qualify as letting it happen in my view.

Saw it in the theater. I enjoyed it, and I feel the same way as you. There are things that make each cut better than the other. It’s much more serious and that’s its greatest strength. I enjoyed it a lot, but I have one complaint. As strange and out of place the scenes with the robot are, I felt the beginning went by way too fast for me. I like the last two thirds worked better than the theatrical cut, and especially the ending. I’ve only seen the theatrical cut 3 times before as it wasn’t until recently that I actually owned it, but I wouldn’t say either is definitive. While I’d lean toward the directors’ cut, I feel like my ultimate version would e similar to the Selutron Superman 2 putting back in some of the stuff from the theatrical cuts first third. Other than that, I really have no complaints.

I disagreed with most of his edits lol. Yeah, you got rid of the robot but in doing so you halved Burt Young’s onscreen time. The extra scene with Apollo at Rocky’s house doesn’t make sense because in that scene Apollo is still considering whether or not to fight Drago but in the next scene which happens on the same day it sounds like the fight is already set. And the moment during Apollo’s fight where he yells at Rocky not to throw the towel has been cut, making it seem like Rocky never had a chance to throw the towel anyway.

My copy of the film is 94 minutes. With 7 minutes of Rocky 3 and over 5 minutes of credits the actual film is under 82 minutes. I like the extra scenes with Apollo, the first fight was better and the extra scenes at the funeral were good. However i was hoping for a film around the 2 hour mark but they cut too much out i understand cutting the robot out but they cut out a lot of Drago's wife's best lines and they even cut out Apollo's best line about retiring more men than social security. I feel Stallone could have kept more in and made this a really good 110-120 minute movie. Some of the editing is a bit choppy and lines don't match what is happening. Example in the first fight you hear a commentator say Creed has slipped but the footage does not show him slipping like it does in the original film. Showing Creed slipping was good because it does show he has ring rust and his footwork is not what it used to be.

As you said it's more serious, even the sound is better and more realistic, the boxing matches, the hitting of each other sounds better than the shotgun sounds we're use to in the original. I felt this film is more Apollo’s story than anything...you know. The original it's Rocky's story, you know what I mean?
One of the most interesting alterations is choosing a different flashback to Rocky III. It opens this Rocky IV on a more somber note, and emphasizes the importance of Apollo.
The first act is way more Apollo centric. It deepens Apollo’s motivation to fight Drago more than just his restlessness in retirement, although that’s still there....I felt again, Creed felt threatened by rocky still " on top"
I haven't watched the original in a long time, but this film also, heavily implies that Drago wanted to fight Rocky all along. So he may have just used Apollo as a way to get to him...it's what I thought anyway.
I really liked it. It felt like a brand new film because I haven't seen Rocky lV in years, like since 2010....so it was nice to watch it without watching the original first, or recently I should say.
Sly did a good job with out over doing it, I still wish it was a longer move and the robot was cool.... The fight with Creed and Drago literally gave me chills, and I'm not afraid to say this, my eyes were a little watery...lol...🤷🏻‍♂️ It was the combination of creeds defeat, and the reactions from the crowd and rocky and Tony that had me all....you know, sensitive. Again, the only thing I wish sly did was keep some of the original in this version and make it a longer film. I was hoping for a 2 hr and 15 minute rocky lV.... Like the scene with Rocky giving Adrian her wedding anniversary prize lol...i like that scene from the original...Definitely watch it guys it's a great movie....all over again you know... I definitely like it a Little better than the original💯....👍🏻🥊🇺🇲🥊

I liked some of the alternative training montage footage (especially the speedbag!). Also liked the extended funeral scene. Rocky has a line about Apollo's death that makes it tie into Creed 2 better.

I’m sorry man you couldn’t check it out on a big screen. I just got back and I really, really liked it . I thought it was tremendous . The tone of the film was much different I felt . I had a since of dread in certain parts . The James Brown scene especially. I’m watching thinking man Apollo was such a great character. His entrance was awesome . I felt like I was looking at Adrian with the same look she was giving Rocky . The moment they touched gloves or when Drago slapped his gloves ( I feel like that was a different cut) . I got upset . I had to tell my myself it’s ok you can see him in the mandolin. 😆
I like that he made Apollo’s fight longer . I also like the voiceovers and the different ending.
I think there’s room for both films in the franchise. I would say if you’ve never seen the Rocky films go through and watch them all. And then both Creed movies. And then you graduated to Rocky vs Drago . But if you’ve never seen Rocky 4 watch the 85 version first at least I’d say .

I am a big fan of the entire Rocky franchise, with Part 1 being my all time favorite. I found the new Director's Cut of Rocky IV pretty cool, mainly because of the never before seen footage. But .... this new cut is choppy and awkward. I personally think Sly should have left the movie exactly the way it was, and just added in some of the extra footage, along with alternate takes. Just my opinion.

I just saw this in the theaters. I can't understand why the removed scenes were not in the theatrical release. It allows the movie to flow better and answers some questions from the original release. Things just happened in the theatrical release that weren't explained. Like some others were saying, the first twenty minutes felt rushed, but with good reason, because other than the birthday party missing it went in sequence like the original. Drago felt more human to me...its hard to explain, but he felt more like a product of propaganda rather than a cyborg and even allowed me to have sympathy towards him. There were enough changes to keep my attention. I've seen this movie enough times to notice when something is new.
    SPOILER ALERT...
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
I don't know the thinking behind the ending when Drago was knocked down. Did the referee just stop the fight? That was the only part that was confusing to me.

Just saw this and the original film back to back. Both have it's strengths, however Rocky 4 was way more serious and more Dangerous than the Director's Cut. Yes the Director cut is more fleshed out, (Story Wise) yet the original is just more heart pounding, more mysterious, more emotional, more prowness, and more epic than the new uncut.

This is a poor analogy but here goes:
We have all seen the Zapruder version of the Kennedy assassination. We know every frame, every sequence by heart. But that is not the only version that exists. There is footage and photos from other angles and perspectives and makes the entire event become more than a memory sequence. It fleshes out the experience, making it happen in several dimensions, not just one point of view. That's what the Director's Cut gives you...a new perspective on a familiar experience with no change of outcome. A more rounded experience. Nothing is lost, but more texture enriches it.

Because c'mon aside from and "Eye of the Tiger" most people think of Conti. NOT AS GOOD AS THE ORIGINAL (but great to see the movie in theaters!) : id give the original version a 8.5 out of 10 and this version a 7.5.
i liked seeing the changes....BUT the original movie WAS SUPER FUN and made you feel some national pride and hope for a better future. it even inspires you to be something more...
This version takes away ALOT of that fun/optimistic vision, and well needed in parts humor... modern times are and have been for a bit super dumb... and this new version tries to pander to a new generation instead of bringing them up to higher ideals and perhaps a simpler purer spirit of heart. not to mention the surround sound muffled alot of the audio at times...tho the hits were alot better sounding in it.
WITH ALL THAT SAID..and prob a bit more that i could say..... I STILL LOVED THIS RE-RELEASE because it was a chance to be transported back in to that time period of the original films release. also its Sly i mean.. he is the underdog and a beacon of hope for those who want to better themselves.
