The long bien over night market in Hanoi is the craziest market in Hanoi. From the moment we got there, the night market was packed with people, scooters, and vendors. The Long Bien market transforms the streets into frankly a lot of stress. Haha. Hanoi, Vietnam has been culture shocking, and this market gave us the biggest culture shock in Vietnam. This wholesale market in Hanoi is specifically for vendors of nearby to get their items in bulk. We got pushed around, saw dogs about to be eaten, and even taunted. The is the craziest Hanoi market.
As always thank you so much for watching!

    About Us!
If you had told me a year ago that we were going to sell all of our stuff to start backpacking the world, I would have called you a liar. Decisions like the one we made start with an inflection point. A point where you realize that life can never be the same anymore. After a challenging, and painful year in 2017, we decided we needed to go out and live the life we wanted to live, instead of watching it on someone else’s TH-cam Channel. We had given everything we had, physically and emotionally, for other’s dreams and were ready to work that hard for ourselves. From rock bottom, Chase for Adventure was born.
    The Chase Begins
We moved in with our parents, sold everything we own including our cars, and paid off $70,000 worth of debt. We worked 70hrs/week over the last year trying to save up $15,000 to make our dreams come true. Now, we are travel journalists who showcase the beauty in different cultures and inspire others to chase their dreams through our TH-cam Channel and website Chase for Adventure. We want to show others that if they want something bad enough, they’ll figure out how to get it; show people who are struggling that they can make the light at the end of their tunnel. Chase for Adventure is more than just a travel vlog and blog; it’s the chronicles of what it’s like to have a dream and do whatever it takes to attain it.

Hi guys. Thanks for making the video. Always good to see a different perspective on things. As a travel writer myself, it's the ultimate challenge to parachute into a location and try to get the local perspective instead of simply sharing personal observations (which may be biased, ignorant, or just simply wrong). I think local insight is what's missing from this video. So just my two cents as a Vietnamese-American who's lived in Saigon for the past 10 years...
In the teaser, you say this location makes for a "crazy Hanoi night market" and encourage tourists to visit without providing the most pertinent facts:
    1) It's a wholesale market. It's not set up for tourists or individuals wanting to grocery shop.
    2) People from all over are coming to buy in bulk to re-sell at other markets. They're all on a deadline and want to get in and out as quickly as possible.
    3) Much like Tokyo's Tsukiji Market, tourists are not welcome at all, especially in the middle of the market. Tourists bring zero benefit to the people selling / buying here, but rather negatively impact activity.
Things that might have affected how you were treated:
    1) Filming in the middle of the street where people had to go around you. This market in particular is literally a workplace. You'd probably be peeved if a film crew walked into your place of work uninvited and disrupted activity (even to a small extent). So first impressions were going to be negative.
    2) Look at what you're wearing. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but... is anyone else in the market dressed like you? If someone traipsed into my workplace dressed like they were going to the beach, how would that affect my view of that person?
    3) Engaging sellers who ONLY sell in bulk and asking to buy ONE item. Knowing what kind of market this was would've saved you from that negative experience (and explained why they initially didn't want to sell to you and why someone else piped in with a high price). To generalize about the Vietnamese shopping experience after that one interaction was short-sighted.
    4) This experience probably isn't representative of Hanoians or Vietnamese. I'm pretty sure Vietnamese vloggers would've gotten the same reception, although they would've been cursed out to their face in Vietnamese whereas the Vietnamese know you wouldn't understand which is why they resorted to non-verbal reactions - eye rolls, honking, jostling (which by the way, in such a tight environment, everyone gets jostled, much less people blocking the way).
What would've made this video better.
    1) Researching the location before you went. It's not a typical "night market" as you'd find in downtown Chiang Mai or even Saigon's Ben Thanh.
    2) Standing off to the side while filming.
    3) Showing the video to a local who speaks English and including their responses as to why they thought you were treated the way you were. This would've provided a balanced and informed video.
Again, just my two cents. Stay safe!

Being polite and kind costs nothing and shouldn't depend on how someone dresses. This isn't an experience isolated to this market simply because its a wholesale market. I've travelled all round the world and am used to travelling in new cultures... spent 10 months in Vietnam recently and would honestly be happy to never go back precisely due to experiencing this kind of behaviour regularly. Regardless of how I was dressed or if we spoke Vietnamese, the lack of warmth, yelling, ignoring us, and just general rudeness (unless I was with a Vietnamese friend, and even then sometimes) was pervasive and exhausting. Towards the end of the 10 months I had little desire to learn any more Vietnamese or ever return. Looking at the statistics on return rate, I'm not alone. I'm a darker skinned Asian person who grew up in the west and Asia, and often had Viet people look down at me or refuse to interact with me immediately upon seeing me, and it felt very racist to be honest... they were even ruder to me than my white American boyfriend, who they constantly tried to rip off even though he has lived in Vietnam for years and speaks quite good Vietnamese, he would always try to be really friendly and kind, and would also quite politely pay extortionate fees (even when he was struggling financially) as an olive branch gesture. We got ripped off several times, and not just with vendors we were meeting for the first time. Sometimes we would repeatedly give business to someone and they would end up ripping us off down the line, with absolutely no business sense or value to a returning customer. Catfished so many times looking for accommodation. It became exhausting doing simple things. People were absolutely shameless about ripping us off or lying. Don't even get me started on the animal abuse, literally some of the worst I've seen anywhere, keeping dogs in tiny covered cages, was not unusual to see dogs being abused openly, I even saw a kitten tied up on a tiny rope going crazy and terrified of people, birds in cages all over plucking their own feathers out due to the anxiety, ducks hung upside down for hours attached to scooters while still alive, squawking in pain... my boyfriend came home in tears one day after he went to see a property and saw someone violently abusing a dog that was tied up and terrified. Someone I know tried to talk to their neighbours about a dog in the neighbourhood that was howling all day and being abused, and what was the Vietnamese neighbour's response? That they should poison the dog. Literally no compassion or sense. Animal abuse happens all over the world but it was almost impossible to escape constantly witnessing it on a regular basis in Vietnam and it shocked and disgusted me how people were totally blasé about it. I did meet some really nice sweet Vietnamese people, and they and the beautiful nature were the saving grace of the trip, but unfortunately the nice people were a minority, not the majority.

As a Vietnamese, I don't think that market is the place for you to go sightseeing guys. People there are very busy and in hurry with their work, so don't expect them to behave nicely. The lady at 11:30 yelled at you because you were standing in and blocking the spot she was selling goods. Her logic was if you kept standing there, the customers would not be able to see her goods and thus would turn to another seller since it was the whole-sale market and there were a lot of places selling similar stuffs.

I guess that's a whole sale market, where trucks carry goods into big city & small vendors come to buy & resell in day time. In Ho Chi Minh city, a 6-passenger SUVs or larger are not permitted to enter the city between 20:00 & 06:00 or so. Hanoi may have a similar regulation.

Saw all the comments and notice that no one explain to you why they ask for high price for the fruits you want. The truth is this type of market doesnt sell products in a small amount. It distributes goods to vendors, small local markets, grocery's shops etc. Thats the reason why it open so early in the morning at 1 am so the customers have time to buy and then start reselling goods in the morning (usually at 6 am). Thats why when you asked to buy mango the lady ignored you, and when your bf wanted to buy they asked for high price, that didnt mean they want to rip you of, it was simply mean that "go away, we dont sell to you". So pls dont judge too quickly you guys. Thank you

I just spent 3 weeks traveling through Vietnam and it was the biggest culture shock I have ever experienced. During my time there I met many nice and helpful people, especially in Ho Chi Minh. However, I also met quite a lot of rude people and experienced a lot of blatant overcharging and scam attempts. I've traveled a lot and I was prepared for it all, so overall I had a good experience and liked the country, but man the culture shock was intense at times. I think the biggest things that turned me off was the endless beeping for no reason at all and the crazy amount of garbage everywhere. I am currently in Thailand and OMG what a nice and smiley bunch of people, traffic actually stops for pedestrians here and people do not beep unless it's necessary lol. Love your channel guys, keep up the good content and stay safe out there.

First, i gotta say, nice editing, i love the music too.
I read your blog, and i came to watch the video, after watching it, i’d like to clarify a few things as a Hanoian:
Long Biên Market is a wholesale market, buyers from this market are all sellers who come to buy things with big amount. Especially at 3am, that time is when new/fresh products and wholesale buyers come .The short hair lady that yelled at you because you guys were standing before her shop, no one can sees her and her small shop, if you dont buy anything from her then dont get in her way, of course she can say in a more tender way, but yelling at you guys might be the faster way haha, thats rude but i believe that no one wants to be blocked when theyre trying to sale. Perhaps pay more attention next time, especially when this market is rarely for visitors.
Oh, btw, you said in the blog that maybe because Vietnam is a communist country and we hate Americans so you were mistreated, well actually, we dont give a fck, like, how are we supposed to know where youre from just by looking at you? We did have a fight with America, but thats our problem American government, not people. So dont think thats because of your nationality, maybe its because of something else =)))

Market place/ super market is always a busy place where trading goods take place. People are always in their hurry to get their work done. It's NOT a place for SIGHTSEEING. So don't expect local people to take their time and sweet talk to you. Most importantly, don't stand in their way recording, selfing videos blocking the view of their customers. The lady was right, she was trying to make ends meet. Can't Fix STUPID! Want a peaceful quiet ROMANTIC place, go to HAWAII island or find some jungles to hike and enjoy your time. Don't be walking around the super market places blocking/obstructing the area and then be BIG MOUTH complaining about the locals.

Something about this whole video and the way you approached others really made me uncomfortable. I don't think you would grab a woman's shoulders and tell her she is beautiful if she was trying to pass by you in a busy area like times square, nor do I think you would slap a man's arm like you've known him for years when you're passing by. Just because you learn how to say hello and how are you in someone's local language does not mean you are being respectful.. These people were at the market at 3 am for work - not to be gawked at and filmed.

Thank you for the feedback. With the woman Annette told she was beautiful, she was ridiculously nasty and Annette had been interacting with her already. With the man she slapped, he slapped her and smiled....which is all in the video. I can completely understand your stance on the language, I just happen to disagree. We learned a lot more than those two phrases and were actually taking Vietnamese lessons. Learning someone’s local language IS a sign of respect and it’s something we do in every country we visit. And it has always been enthusiastically welcomed. Vietnam was just the one place that didn’t care. In Vietnam I have never been treated so poorly and frankly hit so many times....with such consistency. That was especially true at this market. We got hit, push, shoved, made fun of and hit some more. Yet despite all of this, not once did we lash out or be disrespectful back. I understand they are there for work but that doesn’t justify treating other humans with such a literally violent amount of disrespect. Thank you again for your comment. I really appreciated reading a different point of view and being able to have a conversation about it.

@@ChaseforAdventure i really appreciate you taking the time to reply. The video was edited and I should have taken into consideration that those moments were out of context. I shouldn't have assumed you only know a few words - you're absolutely right, making any kind of effort (big or small) to learn someone elses language is a sign of respect and open mindedness. I didn't realize how bad it was while watching this and only when I read your blog did I understand. You guys carried yourself really well, I'm sorry for what I said.

That is so inconsiderate of you. That did not look like a bunch of people trying to be immersant in a new culture. You were loud and behaving like you came to see an exhibition, inconsiderate of the fact that it's a serious place of making livelihood for them, not a sightseeing location. If it was not for you, just get the hell out and stay safe. If you want to experience it, observe without making a fuss and without getting in their way and loudly vlogging on those busy streets. You guys are not travellers. You are just youtubers. 🙏

Have you ever been to Vietnam? I was there for 10 months recently, I'm a darker skinned south Asian person like yourself and there with my white American partner who speaks Vietnamese. We aren't youtubers, we are travellers with experience travelling to many countries all over the world and living in those countries, immersing ourself in the culture and learning the language. And the kind of rude behaviour that's in the video was EVERYWHERE. Even in places for tourists! After 10 months there I would honestly be happy to never go back precisely due to experiencing this kind of behaviour regularly. Regardless of how I was dressed or if we spoke Vietnamese, the lack of warmth, yelling, ignoring us, and just general rudeness (unless I was with a Vietnamese friend, and even then sometimes) was pervasive and exhausting. Intended to stay for two years for work but... Towards the end of the 10 months I had little desire to learn any more Vietnamese or ever return to the country. Looking at the statistics on return rate, I'm not alone. I often had Viet people look down at me or refuse to interact with me immediately upon seeing me, and it felt very racist to be honest... they were even ruder to me than my white American boyfriend, who they constantly tried to rip off even though he has lived in Vietnam for years and speaks quite good Vietnamese, he would always try to be really friendly and kind, and would also quite politely pay extortionate fees (even when he was struggling financially) as an olive branch gesture.

Thanks for your thoughts. We’ve been living in Asia for over 5 years and have had no problems. We even live in a Muslim thai village 😁👍🏽
