- What if you could decide at the end of your life exactly when and where your death would happen, choose who would be with you, and ensure that it would be comfortable and dignified? You might never look at dying the same way again. In this powerful and revelatory talk, Dr. Stefanie Green, a pioneering practitioner of assisted dying pulls back the curtain to share what she has heard and see what she has seen; to expose the empowering, life-reflective nature of an assisted death. Dr. Stefanie Green spent 10 years in general practice and another 12 years working exclusively in maternity and newborn care before changing her focus in 2016 to medical assistance in dying (MAiD).
Most recently, she is the author of an international bestselling book, This is Assisted Dying, a doctor’s story of empowering patients at the end of life, a memoir about her first year providing assisted dying in Canada.
She is the co-founder and President of the Canadian Association of MAiD Assessors and Providers (CAMAP) - a national non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the multidisciplinary professionals that provide assisted dying across the country. She is co-lead of the Canadian MAiD Curriculum Project, a multiyear, federally funded project being developed to help standardize the clinical approach to care, educate and train clinicians new to the field, and to enhance the skills of those already involved. I am a Hospice nurse. Today I witnessed a patient going thru with this. Her courage, bravery, and desire to avoid an undignified death was overwhelming. She had an inoperable brain tumor. She was a school teacher. At the age of 85 she chose to end her life. Prim and proper, with legs crossed in her bed, just as she lived, she did so. It was the hardest and most blessed thing I've ever witnessed.

The Lord Jesus Christ came to seek and to save lost sinners, and to give them a new life. Suicide is not the answer. Eternity is forever.
My mom died yesterday. She was 89 years old. Widowed in January after 66 years of marriage. She was in end-stage kidney disease, 8 years on dialysis. Diagnosed with Afib in July. In August she fell at home and fractured her pelvis and could no longer walk. She spent the next 33 days bedridden being transferred from hospitals and rehabilitation hospitals. Six transfers in all.
She knew she was dying. For weeks she kept asking "why is it taking so long"? All she wanted was to come home and sit in her recliner and be at peace. I visited with her everyday and stayed as long as I could. But the day before she died she was transferred to CICU and I was only allowed to visit 30 minutes. She died early the next morning in a hospital attached to machines without me there.
I'm 59 years old. I have believed in assisted dying since I was a teenager. My husband died at age 45 with terminal cancer. He passed at home under hospice care with family. My father died alone in a nursing home at age 89 following a stroke just 10 hours after being discharged from the hospital.
Assisted dying IS humane. We should all be able to choose our own exit plan.

Condolences on your losses.
Anyone can refuse medical care at any time and simply ‘go home’ - it is not compulsory. This story doesn’t make sense.
My grandmother passed this way and I was blessed enough to have provided her hospice care at home. She got morphine to make her comfortable and she went with family, clean, on new sheets, in her own bed. It was sunny and it shined on her through the window. I wish this for so many and it hurt so bad to see her go but it’s the best we could’ve done.
Personally, I think/believe that when we exist, death is not present; and when death exists, we are not present. All sensations and consciousness ends with death and therefore in death there is neither pleasure nor pain.
I think that our fear of death arises from the belief that in death, there is awareness.
I mean just do your best to try and remember how it felt in the whole of time, before you were born.
As far as I can tell, we were all "dead" up until the time we were born, and it didn't seem to affect me in the least..
As a hospice care giver I have watched so many patients and families suffer. Assistance would be so kind and caring a loving. A true act of compassion

As a former fiduciary the last 5 years and 6 months people burn through most of their wealth trying to stay alive. Then you have people like me that have been abused by narcissists my entire like and I have Asperger’s. I will never approach anyone or a women after what they did to me. I pray to God he will send me a wife but they won’t so to be honest I hate you all this isn’t an option but you can’t stop me from turning into Light like the famous Buddhist monk. I just want to go home one way or another this world is suicidal for me and people steal my work all the time so I basically take it as nobody cares. But like I said nobody can stop me from vanishing.
As long as medicine is prolonging life, it is a gift. But it becomes a horror if it is just prolonging death. Assisted dying can preserve dignity and reduce suffering.
People can turn down any treatment.
They are often pressured by relatives into undergoing treatments that are not in their best interests. DNR orders are also routinely ignored.
While few here seem to want to address this, are there not a number of greedy people that are willing to make granny feel like a burden?
@@colleenUN I was crippled by an antibiotic my doctor gave me. Now crippled and in pain. This was my doctors fault, didn't give me any warnings and could have used something less dangerous than Levaquin.
I trusted my doctor. They are supposed to do no harm. Now I suffer every day and want to die, but this is not terminal so what do I do?
@@joecheffo5942 Just don't go to that doctor anymore. Just let the sweet embrace of death take you when the time comes and live your life as much as you can before you expire. Going to the hospital will just give you more pain, and for what? Extend your life? Hah! What you don't realize is that doctors and nurses need money too. So they keep you suffering so you end up paying them more money.
I believe we need to be more careful with the things we have opinions on, especially when we are not faced with the harsh facts that people like myself are forced to deal with - I have a chronic progressive condition, and it started off with me being diagnosed after almost dying; I didn't even think I would recovery enough to be sitting here saying that i have intentions of posting my first video on this channel in two weeks but here I am. The harsh realities that I had to face, at a young age, after becoming a mother for the first time were traumatizing and the system often forgets the care in healthcare, so... it's not that we want to die NOW -it's that we want to know we are not going to suffer more than we already have and we do not want our families or our system to suffer as a result of us either. If people have a hard time understanding this, then honestly, they need to be asking themselves whether they are truly humanistic or just ego filled and scared of the inevitable fact that we all die, and we should be able to die with grace and dignity.

But, before rushing to push assisted killing, why are people not campaigning for decent, well-funded, end-of-life care? Or are the elderly becoming a burden on the state?

Also, why do I want to be treated by the same healthcare professionals that you don't trust to be able to make the right decision on allowing people to have dignity in their death? It makes no sense to tell me that I want to end up having to rely on anyone for my end-of-life-care if it means I'm incapacitated. When someone has to do it for you it is a third party. When government does it for you it is a third party. When people who do not agree have to fund it it is a third party. There is no such thing as not afecting a third party.

I live in British Columbia and am approved for assisted dying for non terminal chronic illness. The empowerment and relief I feel keeps me living longer knowing I have a choice

I completely agree 100%. It was the way my parents went and I will choose it too when the time comes.
My grandma just had it done this past Friday . She wasn't scared at all she had written a letter previously advocating it for it to be an option with the attorney general. While I am still very sad about it it was nice being able to say goodbye on our own terms.

I think assisting someone's death is such a beautiful service to provide! This is a very necessary and humane service and should be a normal thing to do! Folks put their suffering animals to sleep. Simple, animal lives means less than human lives that is why race horses will be put down when they break and leg and humans will not. People put down their pets all the time but will NEVER EVER do that to their kids because the love humans have for one another is much higher than that we show animals.

As much as had done so for x amount of years, how is no longer important, what is important is when. Society and social doctrines and expectations (as well many individuals who take pleasure in imposing their own opinions and beliefs upon those who are suffering) dictate the terms of ones own position in life. To some of us It’s just a matter time and opportunity, there is nothing in this world that will change that. People need to realise and accept that it is absolutely not their god given right to deliberately interfere, manipulate or criticise and berate individuals wishes to make their exit on their own terms. It is not your place nor is it your responsibility to purposefully (whether directly or indirectly directly) interfere or move to prevent another’s desired action to free themselves of pain and suffering regardless of whether it is physical psychological or a life threatening/terminal illness. Back off and take look at yourself before you decide that you are going attempt to force another to continue suffering in their excruciating experience of life. The only reason most people would actively prevent another from leaving this word on their own terms, is only to feed their own prerogatives and to satisfy their own emotional needs.
I had the opportunity to assist a love one like a caregiver and, this is an experience that changed my life for ever. Palliative care is a huge way to helping people in that moment in the end of life. Helping the families as well!!!

It's the right of anyone who has a terminal disease or a cognitive one which will only get worse, not everyone wants to feel themselves losing themselves
I find it hard to understand people who think assisted death is wrong. I mean, why watch a loved one who has no chance of healing suffer helplessly anyway? Is that what you call love?
This is called 'emotionally-driven irrational decision' , strong emotions override practical or logical thinking. Is it right or wrong is not for me to say but it's REAL.
It starts with volunteers, then after a while the govt will make it mandatory at a certain age. You know that the govt already wants to get rid of millions of people. . That would just open the door. Just like the movie soylent green. You should watch it.

I oppose assisted suicide, because I am disabled and I don’t want to be forced to live in a world where doctors regularly suggest that I end my own life, as this reincarnation of Josef Mengele supports. This is not a doctor who only helps dying people die, she is enthusiastic about killing people with psychiatric and neurological disorders like mine. Opposing the implementation of such a program is not irrational emotion, that’s self-respect and demanding respect from others. I don’t care how kind and gentle this person sounds; it’s objectively hateful & oppressive to turn disabled people’s suicides into a “medical procedure.” You right to die supporters are NOT entitled to inflict 4th class citizenship on the disabled community so that YOU can plan your own deaths.

I witnessed how my mom suffered from cancer and I wouldn’t want to go through that. I told my hubby I want to die on my own terms should I suffer the same fate as my mom, but he brushes me off. He avoids death topic.
@@kmkmk7887i would not go that far. Death is not “a beautiful thing”. It is important and something worth discussing with people in your life, but not beautiful. Also, many people do not need the clutches of a god-like figure to navigate life (and death).

I have severe ringing in my ears (tinnitus) and I have decided I've had enough. I have live with it for 35 years but after getting COVID it has become unbearable. Tonight I had the first talk with my gf about wanting to end my life. It didn't go very well. I'm tired of suffering with this. It is torture every day.
Wow can't we just leave when we feel it's not worth it? It's so ingrained, I know it's partly religion but not all. People just can't accept mortality. They just can't. That has to be the biggest mental illness of all.

@@Leonetnin Thank you for reaching out. I had major foregut surgery that I can't undo unfortunately and I am suffering from extreme consequences. I am severly malnourished. I can't bear this much longer. I am so scared of getting worse and not being able to get out on my own terms. I don't want to be in hospitals anymore. I am so sick of being sick. I love my family. But I can't suffer much longer. I don't know what value I have if I am just sick and bitter. It is so difficult to see the light.

We are more human to animals than we are to humans
You probably reached this conclusion because of how quick we are to put our pets to ‘rest’. The simple answer is that we value them less than we value humans therefore animals dying is a sad thing especially if they are pets but it doesn’t come close to a family member dying. Race horses will be put down for simply breaking a leg while on the other hand we humans will try our very best to save another human life no matter how grave the injury.

I am suffering agonizing pain, and my medical provider (Kaiser Permanente) has made it almost impossible to obtain a prescription for my pain. I'm 73 years old and losing any hope of relief. I fear this may be my best alternative.
Absolutely great talk .. of o get to the stage as need this I will to chose when I exit this game the death pod sounds like my first choice cos who wants to suffer to death from cancer or such like knowing at the end it will get worse and you will die anyways why prolong the inevitable?? That image definitely stick with you all your life. I cant imagine the sadness not only suffered by those families but yours, that have to see a lot of cases like the final one you told. I shed some tears watching this talk and I am glad to know about assisted dying, being the last will of someone who is dying by any cause. This TedTalk have had an impact on me that left me speechless.

I watched my mother deteriorate, she desperately wanted to die. Despite the fact that it's illegal in the UK to assist, the amount of morphine got turned up each day when she reached the hospice. I'm not going to name that charity but it seems to be commonplace in the UK, you go to this chain of hospices and get ended. Simple. And nobody says a word. I had to confirm her death was due to lung failure, but the truth is, her death was due to the amount of morphine being pumped into her body.
She got what she wanted and I'm OK with that. So actually, I believe assisted dying does exist in the UK.
That’s how it’s done here in the USA as well, be it in hospital or home/palliative care. But because it’s not “assisted” it’s still a drawn out process and agonizing for those last few days.
I believe the same happened to my father. The hospice care he received in the hospital those last couple of days was so compassionate. I believe he was given extra morphine and he was able to pass away without anymore pain. Yes, I miss my dad. But I don't miss the agony he went through for the three months leading up to it.
It is called pain relief! Would you want your loved one to suffer without it? That is completely different from bumping someone off when they are still quite well, or have been ‘persuaded’ to end their lives by greedy relatives.
The outliers with this are people with mental illness. That's a tough one. Not physically ill and could live a long life, yet seek this out, so the question is, how to deal with those folks?

I agree. No one wants to talk about this. But endless suffering is not a life worth living for many people. It's a tremendous ethical issue; however I do believe that a right-to-die is IS a human right.
@@sophieb5440I agree, but it's hard, because being suicidal is a symptom of depression, which can essentially just clear up, with or without treatment. I tried to take my life when I was 20, mainly over a girl, and thought of doing it again at 29, over the same girl. Maybe I would have been better off if I had died at 18, or 29, but now I'm 37, and plan to sign up for cryonics, and it isn't because my life has been worth living, but because I think it could be worth living. I was only a couple choices away from a good life, and maybe I still am. If I had a different mom, or made a few different choices - kept my Bitcoins, my life could be great rn. So I think the right to die should be a fundamental one, but maybe not the right to die on a whim. I do think anyone considering MAID should be at least told about cryonics. When I thought about killing myself, that's what I wanted, a do over. I thought I'd just come back as a baby with different parents and get another shot at childhood. But who knows, I could have came back as a dairy cow😅

Not when it’s used to make life easier for Canadian government to give up on veterans and psychological unwell people. Treatment is the ay to go for these people and with assisted death, there is a lot of harm. Gotta have a better system if you wanna come here and preach about assisted death. If you care so much as a physician and want to be a good one, you can’t be one sided in your perspective. I could write this a lot more formal and nicer, but I spoke from the heart, so pay attention to the message and not how it’s relayed.
I laughed when I read your comment; not in a malicious way but I laughed because everything you are saying to this person could be taken and thrown right back at you. It's silly to ask people like me (terminally ill) to rely heavily on a system that you have said in your comment you do not trust to make proper judgement calls, and think I'm going to get the best care? You are okay with watching people like me suffer in pain while people like you do nothing to advocate for patients but come on social media to spread your opinions about something that has nothing to do with you? When are you going to come advocate for me while I'm not receiving adequate care in the hospital or they won't give me medications to keep the pain away? If you care so much... you'll stop and listen to me. You are not disabled people, terminally ill or mentally ill people's voice - we have our own, you just need to back it up and you aren't.
I think alot of mental health apprehended individuals are peaceful and would rather get assisted death than be a concern to others. (That's how I feel) Abusers don't want assisted death legalized for "no reason". And you'll never get reasonable excuses from abusers or abusive scenarios.

I think this should be MAID legal in the states. I had rather pass in peace & Comfort MAID whole without autism depression and severe RTS spiritual abuse on top of that. I think Psalm 139 should say we are wonderfully MAID then its the right translation after terrible lectures from churches this is all my fault. The casket is wonderfully MAID.

I refuse to live with Alzheimer’s as my mother, her brother and great grandmother died of. Grandma died earlier due to a chemical exposure but I believe she would have gone that way. IAM NOT DOING IT- to myself or my spouse.

A persons free will and what they want to do with their life is always to be respected. However, I have learned that in the dance of life , God will help you but you have to do your part all the way. .. As a health and life coach, I would say that as a society we need to focus more attention on healing mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually and trust that God has our best interest in mind. We have the capability to heal and reverse from all types of illnesses, but just need to follow our hearts, our intuition and ask for help from God and those that can help us. God bless. 🙏🏼 💚

I absolutely agree that we should offer people, when they are fully aware, the choice of how and where we should decide we've had enough of this life. Correct. Inheritance and A gov. not wanting to pay for treatments is just a tip of the iceberg of problems with this. With Coercion, mistakes, abuse innocent people have their lives ended.

Thank you so much for sharing your story and offering your services to those who would rather have a choice in their death over prolonged suffering. I suffer from an ultra rare genetic disease that results in inclusion body myopathy, pagets disease and in some cases, frontotemporal dementia. I currently struggle to walk. I have to use a cane, walker or even power wheelchair depending on the situation. There is currently no known treatment or cure. Its progressive. I will only get worse. Eventually I will be confined to a bed and incontinent. I could live to years this way or go quickly. I don't know. I have seen many people who suffer the same disease suffer for many years. Because of this, I have been vocal about my choice to choose medical aid in dying. I currently live in Oregon, USA which has a well established reputation for legalized MAiD. However the current law is very insufficient for most people as it requires two doctors to agree that the patient is within 6 months of a natural death. For people like me, it is impossible for a doctor to know that, even if they are one of the few who specialize in my disease. The laws surrounding this focus too much on the TIME for life, not the QUALITY of life. We need to change this. This is a dignity issue and a mental health issue. I should have the right to self determination. If I didn't have to worry about my suffering later in life, my anxiety would go down significantly. Death is inevitable for everyone. Suffering should not be.

Do you know why I am seeking assisted dying? Because my doctor gave me an antibiotic that was not needed and too powerful for my body. I am not saying he did it on purpose but he did "do harm". Many disabled people are here because of various medical mistakes, drug or vaccine reactions, and other medically induced health problems. So in my case this is to fix the harm that was done and can't be taken back.

If your god really cared about humans then your god wouldn't allow innocent children to be violently abused, innocent children to suffer for years of an incurable illness, or allow vulnerable people to be killed and victimized. Thats why you dont do it within the city. Thats rude. I understand not everyone can travel however; especially the old or sick. One of my enemies actually gave a great piece of advice once: Do it next to a lake so there will be less for society to clean up.
My husband did exactly that to end his pain and suffering. Yes, the police were involved and there was an investigation. I believe he wouldn't have been brought to the point of taking his own life if the healthcare in the US was better, especially for our military veterans. 😢
