    Thanks for the videos.
    I have had an old motorcycle workshop manual lying around for about 5 years in loose leaf format just as it came out of the printer & always meant to do something about it. Punching holes & fitting into a ring binder wouldn't really be any good as the holes always break out in the end, but this method is perfect for my use. You have a gift for putting the method over clearly & concisely. Thanks again.

      Thank you for the compliment, I have been teaching classes a long time. As I grew up, my mother constantly corrected my grammar and said I should listen to Walter Cronkite who was a real news caster, a man who delivered information, and to speak like him. ( Unlike the anchor people today who are simply there to give a smidgen of news(?) between drug commercials. PBS is much better where we get a full account of the event/story.) Thanks for watching!

    Love your videos! I was really surprised this was from 2011 as the quality is really nice. You have a great way of explaining things. I'm just starting out with hobby book binding and have made a few perfect bound notebooks. I wish the video had shown you attaching the cover as my end papers always wrinkle to some extent when attaching them to the cover.

    • @Ceropegia
      @Ceropegia  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I case in books in other videos, it's the same procedure. There are a number of causes of the wrinkling, to avoid the wrinkles make sure the grain of the end paper is parallel to the spine and don't use paper that is over calendared or too thin, I usually use a cover weight Ingres which is still around 200 gsm and comes in many useful colors. Thanks for watching.

    Hi Sage,
    I know this is an ooollllld video but I've been following along and made my first bind.
    I had one issue though...when I trimmed off the lining paper from the spine, I removed the last page of the text-block by accident!
    Should I just run some PVA down the spine and hope it sticks back on?
    What do you think?

    It is dry to touch in a couple of minutes, in layers, in the lining, it depends on humidity. It's definitely movable and workable in a few minutes, but I will usually let it rest over night to completely dry before sending it out into the world as a finished book. I try to finish books like this the day before the client wants them in hand.

      I am always using Arches Text Laid paper ( that was the paper which will be difficult to get now that arches no longer makes it. You can use any good text weight paper, just be sure that you make sure the grain is running parallel to the spine. Thanks for watching.

    I'm hoping to make a couple of books as Christmas presents this year, so I'm really grateful I came across these videos. As someone whose book binding experience is limited to going at a stack of papers with a stapler, this is by far the most helpful and thorough tutorial I've found. Do you have any suggestions for where to buy the materials you use for perfect binding?

    Thank you for this very nice explanation. I did not fully understand why you glued the boards on, only to later cut them off again. Was it to provide stability during the gluing process?

    • @Ceropegia
      @Ceropegia  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, the boards also make it easier to knock the pages into alignment before adding glue. Thanks for watching.

  • @Ceropegia
    @Ceropegia  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't know the A sizes. But I have done this with 2 inch (5cm) stacks of Tabloid size paper, ( 14"x17" - 35 x 40 cm)

  • @bella-bee
    @bella-bee 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    How would it be if you put on the head and tail bands after cutting off the boards? I was watching, hoping the effort of cutting through them didn’t rip something off the binding!

    • @Ceropegia
      @Ceropegia  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's perfectly all right to put them on after cutting the boards off, I put them on before cutting the boards off to save time as Ii am usually doing a number of these each time. This also makes them a perfect fit to the spine width. Thanks for watching.

    • @Ceropegia

      It is called mull or tarlitan, It is simply starched gauze. You will see it in all of my videos where I line spines.Thanks for watching.

    Hi Sage
    Your videos are very good. I have a situation with every book I make. The last page with the end paper always tears off after I case it in and open it. Any idea what I’m doing wrong ?

    • @Ceropegia
      @Ceropegia  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      are you talking about the last page of the text block? Is this a sewn binding or a perfect binding? If the spine is properly lined the the text block with the end paper should remain solid. If this is a sewn binding the mull and tapes will prevent that, if it is a perfect binding the sawn in cords and paper lining on the spine should hold everything in place. (You could add another bit of the mull to wrap around the spine)
      Without seeing the book, I can only guess. if I see it I would know what went wrong. If this is a consistent problem there is something you are missing. Check out my videos on lining the spine for sewn books, I assume you have seen the spine lined in this series on Perfect binding.

      Sage Reynolds
      Thanks very much for your response. It is greatly appreciated. If it is possible, can I send you a picture of my work to an e-mail address for you to see.
      This is a perfect bound book, but now I am attempting to do the sewing instead.
      I have followed your videos but I just can’t seem to get it right after how many attempts. I tried with making the grooves and glueing some twine in the grooves but I still have the same issue.
      It does help a lot though.

    will it work for 750 pages book? For 750 pages do I have to sew or is this method enough? Thank you very much.

    • @Ceropegia
      @Ceropegia  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the past I have done large books, Tabloid format, 400-500 pages, The method does hold together. I will recommend that you saw in a string about every 2 inches (5cm) along the spine and make sure the lining and mull is securely in place. The most important thing is that the paper be text weight AND have the grain parallel to the spine. ( I would also add a third layer on the spine when lining.) Heavy weight paper will tend to pull the book apart especially if the grain is perpendicular to the spine. Be sure you rough up the spine well too, the more surface area in contact with the glue the better the hold on the page. Thanks for watching and Good luck.

    • @Ceropegia
      @Ceropegia  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it is, the material is simply starched gauze. You can also use similar fabric sold in fabric stores and the material called tarlitan that etchers use to remove excess ink. Thanks for watching.

    Is this method suitable for the restoration of an old family bible as opposed to sewing please... The paper is rather thin

    • @Ceropegia
      @Ceropegia  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Clive, If the job is to repair the covers falling off and all of the pages are still in line with the spine you probably can do the repair, relining the spine, without having to resew. Restoration is a complicated business that means paper repair and a lot of other things depending on the condition of the book. Without seeing it I can't even guess. Thanks for watching.

    How many books per hour please?

    • @Ceropegia
      @Ceropegia  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That is a mysterious question, only machines will do something repeatedly for an hour and you have a number, this is hand work. It would be better to ask how long will it take to do x amount of books. If I had an order for one book it can be done, cased in and be in the press in less than an hour. If I had 20 books to do, it would take a day and a half.
      Thanks for watching.
