Thanks to everyone who voted in the last DDD poll! I’m picking the next artist, but feel free to suggest artists in the comments. Thanks for watching! (And plz buy some merch it's for a good cause)
George Michael's discog (including Wham!) is super underrated and a fascinating display of how pop grew between the 80's and 2000's with an artist who refused to stay still
Tranquility Base is an album that ages like wine. The more I listen to it, the more I fall in love with that effervescent image of a retro hotel on the moon, learning of the cards and characters inhabiting this slowly gentrified spot in the moonbeams
I still and never will understand the people like you going off about this album... When did you start listening to the Arctic Monkeys if i may ? This album (to me) feels like the sound of the band drifting from the grasp of the band members and moving towards Alex Turner. And it's the least alike their earlier stuff. (But it does sounds like a Nick Cave/Shitty Bowie record, which Alex Turner loves a lot) i'ill give you that.
@@Stars2p (I’ll put aside the fact that I felt insulted by the “nick cave/shitty bowie records” as huge bowie and nick cave’s fan so I can answer you politely) As you explained yourself, the album, to you, isn’t your favourite and you wish arctic monkeys would have kept on a rocky path. Well, as a people going off about this album, let me tell you first that I think arctic monkeys’ first albums are fire and that the first one is my personal favourite (I honestly love them all, I just have some struggle with AM, maybe because I’m tired of hearing it everywhere). Moreover, I might not be old but thanks to my dad I’ve been listening to them since 2006 so I’m not a new AM listener. And all of this doesn’t prevent me from thinking TBH&C is the best album they ever made. Maybe it is because I’m a Bowie, Nick Cave and Pink Floyd’s fan that i love this album so much: I mean a dystopian sci-fi concept album with a story telling that criticise capitalism? Hell yeah! This album shows the lyricist genius Alex Turner is because it is freaking poetry and everything in this album is so smart, so well thought. And I can get why people doesn’t really like it, plus the AM/TBH&C transition was quite harsh I admit, and TBH&C is what I call a difficult album. As a french person i really like the wine analogy and I think I can push it further by saying it is like red wine not simply it gets better every time you listen to it but it is also quite difficult to like the first time you taste it. But, trust me, once you like it, you never get tired of it. I know a lot of people who don’t like and might never like red wine, and it’s okay. It is also okay for you not to like it and not to understand the hype around it. However you have to know that liking TBH&C doesn’t prevent someone to like the first albums and it isn’t about being new. About Alex putting an end to his rock phase, I sometimes, like you, get a little bit nostalgic about it and then I remember that AM wouldn’t be my favourite band if they didn’t evolve this much (for example I love the strokes records as much as AM first records but I prefer AM to the strokes because of this evolvement). Plus I tried to picture the current Alex Turner, a grow up man in his old thirty who looks like he’s tired of life and I just can’t picture him writing albums like FWN and the way he changed some songs from the first album during his live performances (changes such as slowing them) and how at ease he is singing Star Treatment on their new tour (he literally performs as a character, he’s an actor in a play besides being a singer on stage) reminds me it wouldn’t be as good as it was, it just wouldn’t fit and AM would just become one of these bands who chose to suck on the wave of their success. I hope my opinion and the way I relativised gave you the answer you were looking for.
quick correction from someone who had a very intense arctic monkeys hyperfixation in 2020: the neighbours were alex and jamie. they both received guitars christmas 2001 and as a result of that, the strokes and bands their mates were in (including future bassist nick o'malley) made them want to make a band :)
wait, i also went through the most intense AM hyperfixation in 2020. i knew a few of their most popular tracks over the years, as they released them. but holy shit, in 2020 I became a huge huge fan. played all their vinyls to death and watched every yt video about them. looking back on it, i think this may have been a coping mechanism for deep depression i was going through, but idk. truly a special band , seeing them LIVE for the first time next month. v v excited
respectfully, why 2020? they were 2 years past tranquility base in 2020 and not really up to much so i’m curious as to what drew you in during that year! asking because i had an intense Arctic Monkeys obsession from 2013-2015 (and they definitely defined my personality as a teenager lol) but i feel like nobody outside the fandom has talked about them since the mid 2010s
I can't really get into Tranquility Base either, but I absolutely respect it for the sheer ballsiness. They FINALLY break out in the US five albums into their career, they get a whole bunch of new American indie fans, the band makes them wait 5 years for new music, releases NO singles beforehand, and then they drop a weird sci-fi lounge album instead of normal indie rock. It's amazing. No sarcasm I love that this happened, total Chad move.
I f* love TBHC, it took some time, don't know what didn't click with me in the beginning but when I came back to listen to it...maaan...I wouldn't be surprised if statistic showed it is almost my most listened
Honestly the album was just an answer to those fans of the Last Shadow Puppets who were wondering if the influences were ever going to go backwards up stream and influence the Arctic Monkeys now, like Arctic Monkeys in a way influenced the Last Shadow Puppets second album.
In 2013 we had a poll for the best song in Russian Arctic monkeys fan-club. It was going on for a couple of weeks, and when we got Crying Lighting against 505, they were going side by side with the same amount of votes for 5 days straight. It was insane, it was a real holy war in the comments. 505 won by one singular vote, after the poll time was extended to another 2 days
Tranquility base is a mastapiece. Wasn’t really feeling it when it came out, but I haven’t been able to stop listening to it since 2018. I won’t say I like it more than the first two albums, but it deserves to be cherished as much as them
Couldn't disagree harder. I'm a fan of slow, pretentious indie - but musically it is an absolute slog. The concept, visuals and many of the lyrics are great, but it's all held together with this pondering and uninspired keyboard. Dreadful.
PLEASE do a Fiona Apple DDD. The entirety of her discography is exceptional and you wouldn’t have to worry about it becoming outdated soon, since she releases an album every 10 years.
Surprised you didn’t mention the David Bowie inspiration behind Turner’s vocals on Tranquility Base. I mean yeah he never really admitted it, but it’s definitely there.
i've built up a lot of respect for arctic monkeys over the years, but my favourite album by them is and will always be tranquility base. i've basically used the most part of 2018 to constantly croon star treatment over and over. i even built the model thingy on the cover lol
With all the mentions of Josh Homme in this DDD I would love to see QOTSA get their own episode. Its hard to overstate how much Josh has weaved in and out of rock music for the last 25+ years between just his own projects he has played in (Kyuss, Desert Sessions, Them Crooked Vultures, a little with Eagles of Deathmetal) as well as work he has helped produce. He's has a way of always showing up when you least expect him.
Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino is one of the greatest left turns in music history, and one of the best albums ever made. It's a perfect record in every way
Jesus. If it was one of the "greatest left turns in music history" this comments section wouldn't be full of hipsters w_nking over how brave and flawless an album it is. I hope Alex Turner feel ashamed of what he did. A load of American college kids commending his artistic bravery for playing a piano. He really is the Mark E Smith of our times.
tranquility base is my favorite album, full-stop. i refuse to have reservations about it. at some point in 2020 it just clicked and i decided that i loved it as a whole, probably due to the themes of isolation and political unrest etc. the production touches are immaculate, and i love the camp and humor and Vibes. just a masterpiece imo
The Jeweller’s hands is such an underrated song imo, one of my favorites, sadly they almost never played it live. Humbug is actually a very interesting album and deserves the same attention as their other albums like AM or “Whatever they say…”, really worth revisiting.
"I Wanna Be Yours" is a cover from poet-singer John Cooper Clarke. Was hoping you'd mention that, especially considering Alex didn't actually come up with the "vacuum cleaner" line. I think the original is much better. Very fun song.
Favourite Worst Nightmare is one of my favorite rock albums, period. Everything about it is 'tight' - the rhythms, the lyrical hooks, more. I'm very happy you called out my favorite songs from AM, though: Mad Sounds and Fireside feel like someone is literally injecting dopamine into my brain, and Knee Socks is stuck in my head 80% of the time, even if I haven't heard it in months. Thanks for your opinions on the music and production - as usual, I never think about those things as deeply and intricately as you do and it's super interesting to hear.
I would love to see a DDD for either Ween or Rush. The former because their catalog is so diverse and interesting and the latter because of how iconic they are and with how many albums they have overall. It also helps that Rush have evolved with the times over the years as well so seeing their evolution as a band is pretty fun imo.
Mr. The Snare, I for one suggest a They Might Be Giants DDD. That would be pretty intense, though, I believe they recently hit their 20th album release.
I want to know his opinions on Mink Car!! TMBG have such a diverse discography, and even albums that aren’t their best have some crazy interesting ideas in them I’d love to see him dive into!
One of my favorite bands. I remember being a lil 15 year old and discovering "I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor" on Myspace and losing my absolute mind over how amazing it was. I completely missed Humbug so I had the joy of coming across Crying Lightning about a year ago and it is constantly in rotation on my playlists. So happy you covered them and I hope you get to cover Spoon soon!!!
I’m British so find the first 3 arctic monkeys albums to be perfect. So hearing an American opinion on the albums is really eye opening. Some of the conclusion drawn aren’t wrong, they are just different to what I would conclude. Personally I think that arctic monkeys have never released a bad album, they have just released different ones. But the way that you have described the albums was really interesting and has put them in a new light, even if I don’t fully agree with some of the descriptions. Thank you for a great video I would love to see you do other British bands.
The Killers would be great for a DDD, they've made so many pivots in sound that their debut sounds like a completely different band to their most recent project
just in the first 3 albums: 1. hot fuss made everyone think they were a british band 2. sam’s town was them showing everyone that they are, in fact, an american band 3. day and age marked a transition to a much softer sound for the most part
Like everyone, TBHC was completely shocking to me when it came out - We went from the epitome of bad boy sex appeal and longing to a concept album about a jazz lounge. So many people have said that it takes a few listens before it actually clicks itself into the masterpiece that it actually is. The campiness was mentioned in the video, and I think a lot of what stops people from GETTING the album is that it is absurd to describe and some of it is, even more, to actually listen to. It doesn't sound like an AM album, but it IS. The band went in a completely different direction but they all wanted to go that way, all of them loved the idea of it, this is what arctic monkeys can sound like. What I think failed to be mentioned is how a lot of the campiness is just an exaggeration of how absurd technology actually is, put into a retro-futuristic setting. It's an informed commentary of the future the way many SCI-FI media has done up 'til now. How so many of the things that Alex wrote about actually came TRUE during the pandemic and indeed are becoming our new normal - everything from talking to restaurant ordering to religious gatherings being moved online, the fact we have a library of Alexandria wealth of information being used as an egotistical little mirror in our pocket at any given moment, how corporate the internet is becoming, brands trying to be your friend, how he can't even dance at a festival with his friend without someone having to record it, yaddayaddayadda. All of it wrapped in hauntingly eloquent absurd lyrics from Alex who's SEEN this techno-age come alive, maybe even benefitted from it as you said in their origins, who doesn't touch social media with a ten-foot pole and is yet still sucked into the black-hole that it is. How can you not hang on to every lyric? Alex walks through his lyrics like he's strolling through them, like that silver fox sipping whiskey has all the time in the world to talk about his grand life, full of charm and life, like he's slotting in words just to make you smile whilst the world around you is full of lying politicians and performative activism and over-digitisation of everything. Saying that the album is just about a casino on the moon is doing it a disservice. It's watering it down to its bare minimum.
I feel like his point at the end about what kind of record The Car is will have a big impact on how TBHAC will be viewed. Since The Car came out, I feel a deeper appreciation for the previous record. They qualify eachother
Arctic Monkeys have been my favourite band since their debut! My personal favourite record from them is Favourite Worst Nightmare, I think it’s got all the skill from the debut but with slightly more emotional resonance. The variety and consistency of the discography is shown by how many fans have different favourite albums
I suggested this in a previous video, and I think that Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) would be a great band to cover on the DDD. Besides being responsible as the ones who made the iconic Mr. Blue Sky, they’ve been hailed as the “sons of the Beatles” by John Lennon. It’s fitting, considering the band formed around the same time the Beatles broke up, and a lot of their sound is reminiscent of past Beatles records. Their albums have a wide variety of aspects that nearly everyone would find enjoyable. From the swelling 32 piece orchestra in Eldorado, to the disco influences of Discovery, and the sci-fi inspired synths in Time. ELO has just about everything for anyone. Their history is also pretty interesting to look into as well! I feel like you’ll have fun with looking into this band! :)
Hey Mic, I think it would be a perfect time to do a DDD for Beyoncé in time for her upcoming album Renaissance, or you can wait for Renaissance to come out and include it in the DDD.
Nick and Alex’s bass lines on TBH+C are genius man. Nicks bass lines are so beautiful and melodic, kind of McCartney esque, while Alex’s bass lines are groovy and badass. And if you guys are wondering, Nick plays on Star Treatment, One Point Perspective, American Sports, She Looks Like Fun, and The Ultracheese, while Alex plays on all the rest.
i saw somebody make an observation once that since alex is playing bass with the mindset of an experienced lead guitarist, his basslines for the album are more melodic and come off more as catchy riffs, for example the title track
I feel like a dive on The Avalanches would be amazong since every single album of theirs has so much backstory behind them and god I just want someone to talk about Wildflower.
The hold AM had on me and my friends in high school is…unparalleled. Like I don’t think I’ll ever have that kind of relationship to an album again. Great video!
Oh for sure. I think I was 16 when AM came out, and it was a cultural phenomenon amongst American teens to say the least. I liked their biggest singles before AM (Flourescent Adolescent, etc.), but once that album dropped, they became my favorite band. My music taste has changed a bit since 2013, and I've grown out of a lot of the artists I listened to then, but I still consistently turn back to Arctic Monkeys and Alex Turner's solo music as it hits just right now as it did then.
I’m so happy you did these guys, one of my all time favourite bands. I feel like people don’t talk about FWN enough, it’s honestly pretty close in quality to their debut, I mean the album’s got brianstorm on it, it’s a classic! I was a little disappointed that you didn’t talk about do me a favour, that’s one of their best songs imo, that bassline, the drums, and those lyrics are just so perfect. This is probably how I’d probably rank their discography: 1. Whatever People Say… 2. Favourite Worst Nightmare 3. Humbug 4. Tranquillity Base 5. AM 6. Suck It & See
FWN is *probably* my favorite, but it changes between that and Humbug pretty much every day. Not a single song I would skip on either (..okay, maybe Only Ones Who Know)
oh i’m so happy to see this 😭 I’ve been wanting this forever! my intro to them was on tumblr with AM back in 2013 as a young teen, so they will always have a place in my heart
Arctic Monkeys are my favorite artist ever. Been with them since a little after their debut. I heard “I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor” and the rest was history. It’s been exciting to see (well hear) how their sound has progressed over the years. Personally I have loved every release. Especially Humbug… there is just something about… I love that you can hear a bit of the Humbug sound in their releases since. I will agree that Tranquility Base did take some getting use to. However I enjoy the Curtis Mayfield-esque sound and the fact that it’s about some guy thinking about life in a hotel room. Like, we have all been there lol I’m kind of surprised you don’t hear the hip hop influences in AM. I was listening to 90s hip hop and it reminded me of “Why’d You Only Call Me…” and “One for the Road” after a bit which very cool to hear. idk how to explain it properly but it’s there I swear! 😆
Their debut, Humbug and TBH&C are just flawless to me, lyrically and the scope of songs. Their best output to me and I’ll fight anyone on that. I’m so down for their next album to ‘pick up where the last left off’. FWN and SIAS are both 9/10 albums still imo, and have some of my fave songs from them ever (Love Is A Laserquest and That’s Where You’re Wrong come to mind). FWN just has a couple less interesting songs and SIAS can start to sound a bit one-toned after a bit. AM has to be my least fave album, and while I don’t think it’s a bad album by any means, the lyrics are far too ‘on-the-nose’ for me, This House Is A Circus and Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High? probably being the best comparison for my argument. Either way, they’re the best new band of the last 20 years.
Crying Lightning completely floors me every time I hear it. One of my favorites as well. When I started listening to Arctic Monkeys, I had only heard a few AM songs across different social medias. I started from the first album, then the rest through TBH&C. I like their music a lot, and I didn’t really have a problem adjusting to slight changes between albums, until TBH&C. It was shocking, but the album itself to me was like “i’m frustrated because it’s not as catchy as AM, but the lyrics, and the sound are so cinematic to me” I felt like a story was being told through every song and that made me come back and really give it a chance. I love it!!! I am a filmmaker and I use music as a major inspirer for my film making, so when something is cinematic it draws me. When I found out that Alex was heavily inspired through film during the making of this album, it made so much sense to me.
Never did I think a “I think you should leave” reference would work well as an analogy for Arctic Monkeys in the current era, yet here we are. Mic The Snare, you’ve done it again
The last conclusion about tbhc made a lot of sense honestly, never thought about it that way. Personally, I can't choose a favorite arctic monkeys album. At this exact moment, I would say it's humbug and tranquility base, tomorrow who knows?
I’ve always been a little too old for Arctic Monkeys. I like their early albums a lot but it was AM that swept me off my feet. Tranquility Base was an interesting experiment, but crawls. I’m hopeful that they’re next album will find a happy medium between their knack for hooks and playful lyricism while continuing to explore unusual instrumentation.
She’s thunderstorms is also genius. Who else would write this? What other people would write would be “She’s a thunderstorm” or “she’s like a thunderstorm” or something conventional. “She’s thunderstorms” is just a completely unique way to look at the world. Black Treacle is awesome also. So they found a place to hide
It's weird I heard most people don't like tranquility but it ended up being one of my favorite albums ever I think it's absolutely gorgeous and honestly a masterpiece.
It took me a while to love TBHC and The Car. What made it for me was their lives performances of these albums. They sound sooooo amazing live! They are meant to be performed live and be performed in a smaller venue.
Tranquility Base is, hands down, my favourite. When it dropped, I was disappointed by the fact that it wasn't a rock album. Then what pissed me off after that was that it was so damn good. After that, Fav W Nightmare is also a master piece. And for some reason, I don't like AM as much as everyone else does.
I think the humbug b-sides are probably my favorite arctic monkeys songs of all time. Afternoon's hat, joining the dots, catapult, the cover of red right hand ... theyre all just top tier
Tom Waits, Queens of the Stone Age, The Smiths, Talking Heads, Mars Volta, Eminem, Yes, Rush are still the eps I'm most hoping for. Love every ep though man thanks for always getting me interested in listening to more music
God, I love Arctic Monkeys! Whenever I feel bad I can put on the Glastonbury performance of „When The Sun Goes Down“ and „Brianstorm“. I still feel bad but also energetic! edit: My suggestion for the next DDD would be Arctic Monkeys, thank you!
Please do Phil Elverum. An incredible song writer and performer who has created 3 albums that will eventually be considered classics in tgp2, mount eerie, and a crow looked at me. He has incredible range, having released mostly indie folk and noise rock, but also created a black metal album, and a rather good one at that.
Damn this is such a good idea. I would love to see this, though I'm not sure how big the potential audience would be for the video in comparison to the other artist ideas people are throwing around.
This was excellent, thank you! I think you hit the nail on the head with Traquility Base, I want to like it. I just don't unfortunately. Also, my favourite thing about AM is Alex calling interviewers by their first names - there are compilations on TH-cam to enjoy, it completely throws them off guard.
Now that The Car has been out for a good few months, I'd say your thoughts on TBHC were pretty accurate. The Car better holds my attention, but it's obvious that it is a descendent of the prior album. Love the dives, by the way!
Teddy Picker is the song of all time for me and it helped shape the personality I have today. Humbug doesn't seem like a fan favorite in general but it's the one I listen to the most
Around 2008 I had a flip-phone with some sort of speaker on the front that was like half of the phone. The opening of Brianstorm was my ringtone and BOY did that make a statement to the other 14-15 year olds in the New York City area at the time. I love so much of the Arctic Monkeys, and you covered a ton of my faves, but I think one of the most interesting parts of their work is that in TBHC the moon is not only colonized, then gentrified, but has formerly great areas that are now run down because people left for greener pastures. It's a huge exercise in hubris. Also, I saw them live at Central Park Summerstage in 2007 and Voxtrot was opening for them. After a very long hiatus, they are releasing an album again soon. Very neat band from that era that could have been much more popular had they not packed it in early.
this will never happen but I'd want to see a DDD on The Bloodhoung Gang. In my opinion an underrated band that incorporates dirty humor with a refreshing switch of styles over the course of their modest size collection of albums
Mic: (Tranquility Base) is the slowest Arctic Monkeys album so far. There’d Better Be A Mirrorball, sneaking up behind him with an ether-soaked rag: And what about it?
In 2006 I was 13 and really into emo and pop punk and pretty ambivalent at best to all the British indie bands that were all over UK radio, so I kind of dismissed Arctic Monkeys an another The Enemy or Hard Fi or The Pigeon Detectives (and those were some of my favourite of that particular crop of bands). But watching this I realised how many Arctice Monkeys songs I really like! I think I need to check out some full albums after all
Favorite Worst Nightmare is their best album for me, but I've watched them live this summer and I gotta say, Humbug songs just slaps live, it was phenomenal ! Crying Lightning live was a life altering experience, I felt like my soul left my body for a second there. But also, there's nothing quite like I Bet you Look Good on the Dancefloor in a huge crowd, the energy is insane. Overall, Arctic Monkeys is my absolute favorite band and there's nothing like them, I just adore them.
recommendations: The White Stripes (to keep with the trend of 2000's Garage Rock), a re do of the My Chemical Romance one? Arcade Fire, Beyonce potentially including Destiny's child, Interpol, Foster the People.
May I suggest a great band for DDD: Foals. These dudes are the best. They've had a huge progression and there's a lot of gimmicks and cool stories about them (especially Yannis), for example his love for jumping off balconies when performing (????) or, which still amazes me, the fact he plays lead guitar while singing, or the fact they've never had the same producer twice, or the math-rock beginnings of Yannis and Jack (Yannis yet again proving to be one of the best guitar players in the modern world), or the hedonistic Life Is Yours being written in the pandemic, while most bands at that time were writing dark albums about the virus and politics wah wah boring give me the beach. On a lot of days they're my favourite band.
Great video. I am extremely impressed at the fact that you released 2 DDDs in one month! Very unimpressed, however, at the lack of Jobe talk on your channel. Hoping for the Jobe DDD in November 2023. Good job, Mic.
I found them about 3 years ago and fell in love, their first album is still to this day my favourite album ever but looking back I wasn't as connected to it as I am now. I turned 18 last December and started going to skanky pubs and clubs more regularly and the album came back and went to a new level of appreciation for me. A certain romance has been my number 1 for the last 3 years and nothing has come close, but I was surprised to see some of the deeper cuts coming back to me. I was getting into radiohead heavily last year and I still love them, but this past year has made me realise how much more enjoyable music is when you can relate to it, let alone when an album is the soundtrack of the life you currently live. Paranoid android is by far a better song than from the ritz or you probably couldn't see for the lights, but being able to look back on past memories and have those songs play out like a backing track makes the music so much more enjoyable. It's also why I think that the first album specifically doesn't resonate in America aswell since it's quite distinct to the UK nightlife scene, but I do think the lyrics do perfectly describe what a night out in a British Town is like.
Really got into tranquility base listening batphone... This song really bloody get me in the mood. And then got stuck into this masterpiece since 2018.
Mic I urge you to listen to the live version of Only Ones Who Know Alex did with Richard Hawley. One of Alex’s best performances and a great reframing of the song itself imo
Hey Mic just want to say I absolutely love this series (your release reviews too, but especially DDD) I think you combine humor, detailed overviews, and critical reviews extremely well and its been awesome seeing how your video editing and analysis have improved over the past two years since I subscribed. Keep up the good work, I'll be checking out the merch :D
as someone who’s favorite Arctic Monkeys album is Humbug, and who loved the fuck out of both Shadow Puppets records, Tranquility Base hit for me more than I think it did for most, but I definitely agree that the context of what comes next will decide how it’s legacy is viewed down the road
As someone who basically fell off the earth in 2009, I find the continued presence and success of Arctic Monkeys oddly adorable. Seeing Alex Turner go from a shoe gazing softboy to a rockabilly pop star is cute as hell.
Alex didn’t write Wanna Be Yours, it’s practically a word for word adaptation of a John Cooper Clarke poem he had read in school, and I couldn’t disagree with your take on it more
Tranquility Base is that one album you must never listen only once to force yourself to like it, you need to savour each track until you notice the very 'meat' of the album, repeat to your likings, and you can find the joy of that massive departure they did on that record. That's what I did when I listened to it, and it's my most favourite Monkeys record to date alongside Whatever People Say. Some records really need some break-ins for us, but if you're in for a musical exploration, Tranquility Base is something you should try. But if you don't vibe with the album that's okay, Monkeys got you covered with their discography.
Tranquility Base is easily my favorite AM album. The production is as smooth as butter, the compositions are super tight and lush, Alex really shows off his vocal chops on the record, and it’s the direction change they need to keep from becoming stagnant. The blend of psych pop, jazz rock, and lounge music craft a truly interesting soundscape. The only downside I could see people having is that it is slow, but if you can get pass that it’s truly an experience.
I'm among the few who had no idea about this band even existing until the AM album became very popular, and I've since done the deed and looked back through their early work to catch up. This is gonna be very interesting; let's see how many similarities and differences Arctic Monkeys have with The Strokes because... you all know. Edit: 8:03 this might be one of the best observations I've ever seen in a DDD episode. More "this sounds like a videogame song" comments please!
I was definitely someone who got obsessed with the Arctic Monkeys in their AM era (thank you Tumblr!) so it’s awesome to have an oversight of how long it took to get there. Also agreed in every sense in regards to Tranquility Base.
Thanks to everyone who voted in the last DDD poll! I’m picking the next artist, but feel free to suggest artists in the comments. Thanks for watching! (And plz buy some merch it's for a good cause)
A DDD about Tame Impala would be amazing !!
George Michael's discog (including Wham!) is super underrated and a fascinating display of how pop grew between the 80's and 2000's with an artist who refused to stay still
Elliott Smith would be interesting cause you've never given your opinion on him, although it would be fairly depressing at points
PLEASE PLEASE DO THE KILLERS
Led Zeppelin please!
Tranquility Base is an album that ages like wine. The more I listen to it, the more I fall in love with that effervescent image of a retro hotel on the moon, learning of the cards and characters inhabiting this slowly gentrified spot in the moonbeams
Exactly, feels like a fever dream trip to this surreal hotel, love it more every time i listen.
yes ur comment literally explains it man
I like tbhac but I can’t get into the newest release…please get back to rock Alex
@@Stars2p (I’ll put aside the fact that I felt insulted by the “nick cave/shitty bowie records” as huge bowie and nick cave’s fan so I can answer you politely)
As you explained yourself, the album, to you, isn’t your favourite and you wish arctic monkeys would have kept on a rocky path.
I hope my opinion and the way I relativised gave you the answer you were looking for.
stop mic'ing the snare at me, i'll stop mic'ing the snare at you
quick correction from someone who had a very intense arctic monkeys hyperfixation in 2020: the neighbours were alex and jamie. they both received guitars christmas 2001 and as a result of that, the strokes and bands their mates were in (including future bassist nick o'malley) made them want to make a band :)
Hmm I think he also forgot to mention Alex's interest on rap and hip hop.
wait, i also went through the most intense AM hyperfixation in 2020. i knew a few of their most popular tracks over the years, as they released them. but holy shit, in 2020 I became a huge huge fan. played all their vinyls to death and watched every yt video about them. looking back on it, i think this may have been a coping mechanism for deep depression i was going through, but idk. truly a special band , seeing them LIVE for the first time next month. v v excited
respectfully, why 2020? they were 2 years past tranquility base in 2020 and not really up to much so i’m curious as to what drew you in during that year! asking because i had an intense Arctic Monkeys obsession from 2013-2015 (and they definitely defined my personality as a teenager lol) but i feel like nobody outside the fandom has talked about them since the mid 2010s
@@annaisntcool most likely from tiktok, some of their AM songs blew up really hard there during the start of the pandemic
@@lanaa1660 ahhh i see. ty for the reply! that seems random but then again, tiktok algorithm usually is haha
Right? They didn't stay on the sound of AM trying to please those new fans or exploit that last albums success, they just did what they wanted
Weird? Esoteric is maybe a better descriptor imo
I f* love TBHC, it took some time, don't know what didn't click with me in the beginning but when I came back to listen to it...maaan...I wouldn't be surprised if statistic showed it is almost my most listened
Strong agree. Love the fact they did what they wanted.
But it’s still a dull, self indulgent slog.

Dreadful.
Tranquility is such a great album very underrated

I will NEVER stop defending Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino. It has a very special place in my heart.
i've built up a lot of respect for arctic monkeys over the years, but my favourite album by them is and will always be tranquility base. i've basically used the most part of 2018 to constantly croon star treatment over and over. i even built the model thingy on the cover lol

I was just thinking earlier in the week about AM. The chokehold that album had on 2014 tumblr was truly a cultural reset.

It's a perfect record in every way
Why would you say something so controversial yet so brave?
THIS!!!
I would love to love this record, but alas, my hatred only grows.
Someone hasn’t listened to Kid A
tranquility base is my favorite album, full-stop. i refuse to have reservations about it. at some point in 2020 it just clicked and i decided that i loved it as a whole, probably due to the themes of isolation and political unrest etc. the production touches are immaculate, and i love the camp and humor and Vibes. just a masterpiece imo
" No one's on the streets/We moved it all online /As of march"
FWN is really amazing. The best work they did
I would love to see a DDD for either Ween or Rush. The former because their catalog is so diverse and interesting and the latter because of how iconic they are and with how many albums they have overall. It also helps that Rush have evolved with the times over the years as well so seeing their evolution as a band is pretty fun imo.
ween ddd would be great
i would be so happy if we got a Ween DDD
I've been hoping and praying for a Ween or TMBG DDD for years
ween would be amazing
yesss ween
Let's be honest, the more he basically procrastinates on this, the harder it gets. He better get cracking, is all I can say
I would kill to hear him talk about those first four albums. four of my all time favorites
I wanna see his opinions on the masterpiece that is flood tbh
Seconded.
The Killers would be great for a DDD, they've made so many pivots in sound that their debut sounds like a completely different band to their most recent project
just in the first 3 albums:
1. hot fuss made everyone think they were a british band
2. sam’s town was them showing everyone that they are, in fact, an american band
3. day and age marked a transition to a much softer sound for the most part
I love the Killers but I think we need a bit of a break from 2000s alt rock
@@MrStarman926 nah, the further we get away from hyperpop the better
@@iliketrains3495 what are you referring to?
Thank you for this comment ❤ it's a beautiful commentary on a beautiful album by a band that changed the way I listen to music ❤

their early albums are by far their best
But Time is their best one
@@aledandrian Nah, On the Third Day or ELO 2 is. Time is good but drags a bit and is way less proggy.

The bass is just spectacular in it, it scratches your brain
AM was huge .. they even had tame Impala as the opener for that tour too!
This is probably how I’d probably rank their discography:
1. Whatever People Say…
2. Favourite Worst Nightmare
3. Humbug
4. Tranquillity Base
5. AM
6. Suck It & See
FWN is *probably* my favorite, but it changes between that and Humbug pretty much every day. Not a single song I would skip on either (..okay, maybe Only Ones Who Know)
was not expecting a daddy's junky music reference. what the heck michael
oh i’m so happy to see this 😭 I’ve been wanting this forever! my intro to them was on tumblr with AM back in 2013 as a young teen, so they will always have a place in my heart
Like, we have all been there lol
I’m kind of surprised you don’t hear the hip hop influences in AM.
Bit of chart trivia: Do I Wanna Know? was the #1 song on Billboard's 2014 Alternative Year-End.
R U Mine is incredible. The absurdity of the lyrics and how they flow is genius.
Love the vid! I'm going to continue to root for They Might Be Giants as the next DDD if only because I love the idea of you reviewing the kids albums.
Tranquility base hotel and casino HAS TO GROW ON YOU, it took me about 3 months to understand it and just like it. And now. Love it

Also, my favourite thing about AM is Alex calling interviewers by their first names - there are compilations on TH-cam to enjoy, it completely throws them off guard.
did not expect the ITYSL references but they add so much to the TBH&C part, great video as always!
Humbug doesn't seem like a fan favorite in general but it's the one I listen to the most
I absolutely love every Arctic Monkeys release. I can't say that about some of my other favourite bands, they truly are special.
Humbug and Tranquility are absolutely my favourites. Looking forward to album 9 when they do another weird left turn!
SEEING THEM IN 5 DAYS 🤟 my absolute all time faves ❤️
Coming back to say you were exactly right about the new album on the way
It's wild that the band only started in 2006. Arctic Monkeys feel like a band from the 90s to me.
Without sounding like the "erm actually *pushes up glasses*" guy, I wanna be yours is a poem/song by John cooper Clarke that Alex covered
WPSIATWIN is one of my favorite albums of all time. I have almost all those songs on my playlist and love everytime they come up
recommendations: The White Stripes (to keep with the trend of 2000's Garage Rock), a re do of the My Chemical Romance one?
On a lot of days they're my favourite band.
now that the car is out, yes mic, tranquility base was indeed was the springboard to a new sound approach
Good video, I'd love to see a Drake episode personally. Watching the evolution of an artist from beloved to maligned would be utterly fascinating
I would pass on that episode. I have heard enough half hearted phone it in music from Mr. Tootsie Slide to last a lifetime.
This was quite a good video, with enough good humor! I've recently got into this band, love the deep-dive you took!
Love every single album including “who the f r the artic monkeys” if it’s considered a album but my fav album rn is tranquility no idea why but it is
honestly same my favourite album by them is tbhc and my favourite b-side it wtfaam (despair in the departure lounge solos)
Great video. I am extremely impressed at the fact that you released 2 DDDs in one month! Very unimpressed, however, at the lack of Jobe talk on your channel. Hoping for the Jobe DDD in November 2023. Good job, Mic.
i know AM is the normiest most vanilla pick for a favorite from them but fuck i love that album
It's also why I think that the first album specifically doesn't resonate in America aswell since it's quite distinct to the UK nightlife scene, but I do think the lyrics do perfectly describe what a night out in a British Town is like.
absolutely adore this series. It reminds me to go back and listen to music that I haven't checked out in a while.
Sufjan Stevens DDD when?? :)
Sufjan would be cool. Illinois, Carrie and Lowell, his weird ambient stuff, the nine thousand Christmas covers. There's a lot to talk about haha.
I love the shout out to that Alexandra Savior album it's so good
Can we get a part 2 talking about The Car please?
I think Talking Heads’ discography would make for a really good DDD!
holy crap an artist i voted for
As someone who basically fell off the earth in 2009, I find the continued presence and success of Arctic Monkeys oddly adorable. Seeing Alex Turner go from a shoe gazing softboy to a rockabilly pop star is cute as hell.
With a new album coming soon The 1975 would be a great choice imo!
Crying Lightning, All My Own Stunts and Brianstorm are my favourite Arctic Monkeys songs, so glad I got to see them live a few years ago
Gawd, this was a really wrll made video. Not to mention you pretty much prophesied that album drop 😏
