that should be a review on the irwin clamps to the didnt work so well lol
+sam witwiky Thanks for the comment....yeah, the clamp bit... I thought of cutting it out, but what the heck. The little saw is good as a specialized tool. I love Makita, I have to say it was returned though.

@@ESCAGEDOWOODWORKING its not meant to be as powerful as a full size recip saw. Look how much smaller it is. How much smaller the motor is. U cant expect it to be as powerful as a full size. Kinda stupid to expect it to be. Its meant for small easy stuff where a full size is more than enough. Strapping, holes thru sheetrock, pcv, ect. Its not meant for a demo saw.
I'm a plumber and I have the same saw. Small saw for small jobs. Bigger saw for bigger jobs. I use this particular saw that you are reviewing for fitting inside cabinets and water services. Cutting the bolts off toilets and for small repairs in tight quarters. This saw is definetely worth it's weight in gold for me. I use the larger sawzall for actual plumbing install jobs in new construction. Great review.

As soon as you allow the material to vibrate, you remove the ability of any reciprocating saw to cut. The material simply moves with the motion of the blade.

I own this mini saw.
It's a step up from my multi tool. I use it with a metal blade for clipping nails.
Blades are WAY cheaper than my starlock. The mini is lousy for cutting wood, but great on nails.
Perfect "complimentary" tool, but not a stand alone power house.
Exactly what I thought! I recently had to take out an old basin vanity sink, and cut off the siezed pipes and waste traps (some galvanized steel, some copper abs some plastic) … working in real tight spaces, in dark… the multi tool has a few mm stroke length and took ages, ruining starlock blades … a recip saw would have been great but space didn’t allow.
That’s when I see this mini saw essential. I just got one for like 30 bucks, and already have the recip blades, battery and charger from other tools.
I have the top end makita brushless recip - and it’s a beast.
You need a better multi-tool. Milwaukee's fairly new brushless m18 has been a game-changer for me as a sparky. Highly recommend.
Its a "mini" seawall! Why would or should you expect it to have the power and capacity of its bigger brethren?
Bieng a "mini" sawzall, it is mainly for "mini" jobs. Not for cutting truck frames, 4 x 4s etc.
I plan to use mine for light smaller branches up to 2" tree and shrub pruning with the appropriate blade. Also for light metal cutting.
They recommend short 3" blades, not full length blades cutting 4" timber! Small saw, small jobs. Jeez
I agree I just returned the compact model for the same reason. also love that you don't use any safety equipment and flip-flops LOL!!
Perfect saw for cutting inside walls. With a good blade it eats copper and cpvc. I can't get any power tools in some spots. This saw beats elbow grease by miles. Need a bigger saw? then use a bigger saw. This one is perfect for it's intended use.
Which blades were you using? If you are demoing, a demo blade would have tore through that. For demoing plumbing in tight spaces that saw is perfect with it's short stroke. I am going to buy one for just that reason. For the big stuff I still have a Ryobi full corded version which is a workhorse. Use the right tool for the job. There is no one size fits all. BTW, I love the Makita 12v circular saw and multi-tool.
This saws are great for drywall, and blades are cheaper than oscillating tools

your using the wrong blade for wood and the wood needs to be fixed in a way that it wont move

Dude...This saw is not designed for this job.
He knows that. Its just to gauge its power, and how versatile it is. Clearly it doesn't excel with lumber. Particularly anything larger than trim. Now he's aware of its limitations. That was the whole point of the test.
I could see this being great for cutting smaller metal conduit 1/2 - 1 1/4 emt mainly cause the grip

Great demonstration! I bought the Makita CXT 12 volt version (RJ03Z). I live full time in a 36' Keystone wide body travel trailer where every thing is light materials so, it works for me. It appears the 12v and 18v are identical in size and weight. All Makita did was change the voltage and or the motor. I am now shopping for a full size recip. to cut out (a lot) of rose bush root balls in my yard. I think I found a contractor grade recip. I will probably buy this one: "Makita 18V LXT XRJ05"
Pmfsl. Nothing is going to cut well when the clamps are taking the cutting vibration power from the blade.
Well, the angle you cut on the wood doesn't help speed up time. I've always cut at an angle and let the saw do the work. Plus the weight ratio between the saws. So yeah, work that needs done NOW, use the bigger reciprocal, small, on the go jobs? Yeah, you get the point. I just bout a battery pack and that handy little gadget you got in your 🐾 was free for me.
Why don't you match the tool to the job? Your using a tool that wasn't meant to cut 2x4's. It did a good job none the less.
Use a vice to cut down on the vibration and movement and you will saw much easier.
I love this tool for close quarter jobs.
Good tool, in a tight spot, but I’ve seen about 4-5 of these where the screws attaching the blade holder to the plunger have come loose and either fallen out or broken off.
I used loctite on mine and staked them after they came loose.
It's a nice tool and nothing more. This is not a mandatory product for working at home. It's a nice tool for stubborn crazy amateurs who think they owe everything. Well I'm like that.
I wouldn't recommend it for demo at all but for cutting up 1x1 its just fine

+Yvonne Vosburgh Thank you! Yeah, I really wanted to like this tool...and I really like Makita a lot! This is a tool for niche areas. For pipes in tight spaces, it's ok. They sell the larger one that has the big dog power I'm looking for. I just thought, small compact, with maybe just a tad less power than the big one! But, not even!

Its 1/4 the size as a full size recip idk why you would expect only "a tad less" power. The motor is so much smaller. Its mean for like copper pipe, pvc, strapping, light stuff stuff too much for a multi tool but not the needs of a full size recip. Thats why they make it. Its not a demo saw.
@@jacksmith2315 I agree with what you are saying, but some compact tools are surprisingly powerful compared to their larger counterparts. Milwaukee's m12 fuel tools always pack a punch that catches me off guard for the little things. Particularly the m12 fuel multi-tool, and the impact. I was disappointed in the drill driver to be fair. I understand this isn't even a brushless tool, and clearly a budget option, but they could make something more powerful of the same size. The little sub-compact brushless sawzall (XRJ07) they have is a beast. Maybe more along those lines would be nice.
@@chazschuck9017 they cant get that kind out power out a tool this size. Look at the size difference where the motors are housed. Takes a way bigger motor a tool this shape and size would not fit.
@@jacksmith2315 I understand its not brushless and therefore has certain limitations, but thats my point. Couldn't they make a brushless option the same size that had much more power? I'm sure they could. Most brushed tools are disappointing for professional use at this stage.

You didn’t do it justice, your clamps were moving all over the place
the clamps moves because that tool vibrates a lot, too light of a tool is not good at absorbing vibrations , i bought one and returned it, it's slower than cutting with a hand tool lol
Buying this saw for a lady who prunes small trees etc. How do you think it will do vs her old burnt out standard size Makita recip?
the normal sized saw would be way better. This small one is not as heavy and not as powerful
Anyone know how this fairs to the milwaukee hackzall especially the m12s?
Fuel m12 hackzall beats this tool anyday imo.
So if your going to use this for a small job pack a lunch. This is good to know because I was considering one for camping and throwing in my kayak to clear smaller trees. Definitely isn’t going to cut it. Might be ok if I need to cut nails in a wall or something like that though.
Its good for small stuff like that. Its nit good for a demo saw. He was expecting it to be a tad less powerful than a full size which is just ridiculous to expect that from a saw 1/4 the size. Its great for small stuff where u dont need a full size but need more than a multi tool. Sheetrock, pvc, copper pipe, strapping, etc. Small branches it would be good for as well.
@@jacksmith2315 I actually found a cheap one for $50 used so I thought I’d try it myself. yeah it just doesn’t have the stroke per minute,length of stoke or power vs a full-size but in tight areas like piping and lighter jobs it will work . Definitely not a demolition type saw by any means. People just need to know that going in and expect more jigsaw performance being used more like a hacksaw and you’ll be more pleased.As far cutting limbs 2-4 inches and such a bow saw is faster.
@@whatfreedom7 well ya of course it doesnt have the same spec as a full size cause its 1/4 the size of a full size and a much smaller motor. It would be impossible to get full size spec from a tool that size n thats what ppl need to realize. This is a completely different tool and not meant to replace a full size. If thats what they are looking for this is not the tool. The black brushless subcompact is what they need if they want something smaller and a little less power. If they watch a video, read the box, it says this is meant for like pvc, conduit, copper pipe, light duty stuff. People are just too lazy and stupid. They see it says recip n think its the same as a full size recip but smaller. But if they use their brain, they would realize its pretty stupid to assume a tool 1/4 the size putting out the same power

For the work that I do, its like having an additional arm that cuts many many things. I demolish and remodel apartments to move-in finished. Its amazing for toilet bolts, water pipe, nails, closet rods, sheet rock or paneling, pvc. You'd be surprised at how many tripsto the table saw it has saved ne. It even makes installing trim so much better and faster. It makes better cuts than a jigsaw. Rarely, do I need to cut a 2x4 piece of framing or a railroad. tie. If your work involves everything down to the framing, you need this tool.
Exactly. Thats what its for. Its not meant to replace a full size. Dude pretty stupid to think it would be as powerful as a full size when its 1/4 of the size as well as the motor being much much smaller. Idk why anyone would expect this to be a power house saw for demo like a full size. He can keep weilding a massive saw for small stuff if he wants cause he said he returned it since its not as powerful as a full size. Smh.
