  • I tried DRY FASTING for the first time for one day during the Holy month of Ramadan. In this video, I also learn about Islam and talk to some of my Muslim friends about Ramadan and what Islam means to them!
We talk about how Muslims are perceived in America and misconceptions about the Islamic faith. This was such an amazing opportunity to learn about Islam by immersing myself in this ancient practice.
I am fascinated by the connection between mind, body, and soul and absolutely love learning about different spiritual practices, faiths, belief systems, and lifestyles, so this was such an amazing way to learn about Islam.
HUGE THANK YOU to my friend Umayr Shaikh for helping me with the research for this video and sharing his story with me!

Another HUGE THANK YOU to my friend Nada for also helping me learn and sharing her story with me!

TH-cam: • ايش شعورك مع محمد بن ح...
Instead of the five daily prayers that Muslims typically do each day, I decided to meditate instead. I have experience with fasting and intermittent fasting but NEVER have I ever done a dry fast without WATER! This was particularly challenging.

What an absolute pleasure to help you with this video! Thank you for never being afraid to explore new ideas and broaden your horizons. With all the misconceptions surrounding Islam, having someone like you portray the tenets of Islam and Ramadan in such a positive light without any prejudice or preconceived notions is incredibly refreshing and speaks volumes about the kind of person you are! Thank you for granting me the privilege of going on this journey with you.

Being a Muslim and watching this ahhh feels soo good. I love to watch non-Muslim trying or learning new things regarding Islam religion. You did so wonderfully. I love the fact that you didn't leave the namaz completely off the table and instead did mediation during the namaz timings. Also you added the chat with your friend in small fragments throughout the video which didn't make it bore at all! You are awesome. I loved this video so much!!

Islam is a very beautiful religion. I may not consider it personally speaking to be optimal for my spiritual path, I do however have immense respect for this ancient belief system. Social justice, gender equality, being of service to the community and the planet, protecting the environment, and building a personal relationship with God through prayer, are in fact all the values that Islam advocates. I am touched deeply of the propensity of love that the Muslim faith has brought humanity. Unfortunately there is massive amounts of mis information in the media about this religion. Thanks for shinning light on this topic.

@@aminahamza7859 yes and that is why I don't follow it, being one of those "homosexuals" myself. In the eyes of a lot of those individuals that radicalize religion, gay people are no different than a terrorist. I never new that myself wanting to date men would be such a big deal for many. But anyways how the Sufis practice Islam for me is the real Islam! And most muslims don't identify with them and feel they are too out right and don't express real Islam.

The first time I’ve heard of Ramadan, was when I was about 10 years old and my childhood friend tried to keep up with her parents and fasted as much as she can (here in Germany the most people I know only started with this tradition, when they’re at least 15 y/o). I was impressed with her dedication and her family invited me and my parents to „Id al-Fitr“ (in Germany most people call it „Zuckerfest“) and it was so amazing and interesting. Since then I have huge respect for everyone celebrating Ramadan and following the traditions.
(EDIT: my parents were raised as Christians, but not really following this religion since I was born. I myself are not believing in any specific religion, but are open minded and understandable for everyone pursuing they’re beliefs (peacefully). So it was like a different world for me seeing all these people dedicated to a religious practice)

Greetings from Westford, MA. That's so nice that you wanted to find out more about what we do during Ramadan. If you want to try fasting again, try to have your iftar (breaking fast) at your local masjid (mosque). It's an experience like no other that you will love. By the way, I became a Muslim back in 1996.

Congratulations on your day of Ramadan. Your friends were lovely, patient and so helpful. That was enlightening. We are, more alike, than not with others from all around the world. It is wonderful to embrace the similarities, and allow the difference. The differences for me, are truly what makes the world go round. What a dull world it would be if we were all alike. Even, putting Your Own slant on this 1 day of Ramadan but embracing the mindfulness and showing respect truly made your experience, Personal and yet Shared...I know that meal sure looked yummy. Thanks for another great episode.

I love dry fasting, my longest was 46 hours. It’s so nice to not have to think at all about eating or drinking and enjoying all the time this frees up. Important to prep your body before a long dry by getting well hydrated as well as drinking some water w bicarbonate and lemon to cool and condition the kidneys on either side of the fast. Coconut water is a great way to break fast too...

The ultimate spiritual experience in my opinion is to partake in an ayahuasca ceremony. I found what looks like to be an amazing place called "Rythmia" in Costa Rica.(the website looks awsome) I think I'm going to do it when the covid 19 settles down a little more. I'll be scared to death and excited at the same time!

In my perspective , Islam is not a closed relegion for certain people, it is a guide for a healthy peaceful light and meaningful life where you truely connect with God through your self, it is so related to science and energy, I'd love you to know more about the Q'oraan and how it is scientifically related to the discoveries happening in our modern world.
    Much love and light. 💛

I liked the Video, but to get a real good impression of the feeling i think you should try fasting a week at least, the first day is so heavy, and i think all the TH-camrs just fasting one day brings a bad image of how it really feels, because the first day is hard but after 1,2 days you really start to feel the change and empowerment. i think this makes people think we are constantly having a hard time like they see the people having on the first day and think this is Ramadan, just feeling hungry and powerless everyday

    • @livingtheskylife
      @livingtheskylife  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I totally agree! I would like to do it longer for next time, but it was not possible this year with how many video projects I have to manage currently. I also needed to start small because I had never dry fasted before so it would have been a lot for me to do for a whole week. The purpose of this video was more to immerse myself for a day and learn as much as I could and it was a great experience. Also, many Muslims who dry fast for Ramadan have been doing it most of their lives so they are more able to manage it! I would need to build up.

@@livingtheskylife That is a beautiful answer, and i understand that is hard, i really love your video's and how you go into every culture its beautifull to see things like this, it was really just about the fasting part (like in general not meant to just you) the rest is absolutely wonderfull. Awesome! And so timely for me. For a number of "reasons" I have allowed myself to indulge in "honesty" (apologies for the repeated inverted commas) recently, as an expression of being "true to myself" (there's another one), without truly considering the possible repercussions of my comments upon the other person. It's not bad all, however there were three moments recently, where I realised I was being more provocative than honest. Your guests comment about considering our thoughts 10,000 times more than the other person's, really hit home. That, and the fact I've been over indulging in food, a prolly a little alcohol too, more than I would do normally, has made me realise that this video is the wake up call I needed. Thank you so much for your continued broadcasts - they really do resonate with, I'm sure, the world at large (or perhaps I'm getting ahead of my own ego there). Much love! You're awesome! ❤️

I'm a Muslim. And I can relate with you. But for your information for the first few days you will fell the thirst and hunger some times. But after that you will feel amazing power flowing through your body. And you will be able to do things you couldn't do normally like waking up early. You will feel fresh and attentive all day long. Instead of normal days when you don't FAST. and the basic purpose of Ramadan, fasting and zakat is to feel the pain of poor and homeless people who can't afford to eat properly and give them zakat so they can feed themselves and their families.

*Fasting is not just abstaining your stomach from food. When a person fasts, his eyes are also fasting, which means he does not look/watch at evil and forbidden things. His ears are also fasting, which means he does not hear evil things such as back biting, cussing etc. If there is a place where this is happening, you simply stop them or walk away from there. And hence your feet are also fasting, which means, you walk away from the place where evil things happen. Your hands are also fasting, which means you don't cause harm to anyone with your hands - and most importantly (and perhaps the most TOUGHEST one - Your tongue is also fasting, which means, you control your anger, you don't say words that could hurt anyone even though they may be true. You don't back bite, you don't cuss out, you don't scream, you don't speak a lie. Your heart is also fasting, which means you take out any malice and clean it from everything and you forgive people who have done injustice to you, just for the sake of Allah.*
*Ramdhan is a month of practice where Muslims are supposed to practice and develop these traits and then try to live the remaining 11 months the same way as they did in Ramdhan, till the month of practice comes again. All the best to you.*

I hope your day is going well. My group art exercises are going well, and met some more new strangers on Facebook, and recently in the park. I grew up in NYC, so I was always aroudn blacks, muslims, asians and hispanics in pre-gentrification NYC. This was when NYC was very united and friendly. That all faded away when NYC was flooded with gentrification/racism. But it hasn't changed me as a artist, and it doesn't stop me from spreading spiritual love, through conversation and art and just pure love and kindness. I just hope to spiritually connect with you one day..... Always daydreaming about it....

Well Sky, you have never disappointed me in bringing me out of my comfort zone. I was already comfortable with your videos about witchcraft and satanists but to open my mind in my eyes about the Islam religion really broadened my horizons. It has taught me never to judge another person by their religion and has taught me that peace and harmony is possible and humanity is responsible for maintaining it. Thank you so much for bringing so many belief systems into a positive light, I really hope that this opens people's eyes. I appreciate you in making the world a better place!

Sky, You are gorgeous, inside and out. Thank you for this informative video, which seemed to come at the "right" time. Alongside Dr. Wim ;), tomorrow's a fasting day, and I'm going to do it as you've describe, as many do during Ramamdan. Dry fasting is the way when I'm ill, but I'm so not- rather the opposite these days :))) - so let's see how this pans out. I'm pretty excited this has come into my radar, as it is, after all, an auspicious time, which a Pleiadian portal being open, for another 5 days. Maybe I'll do it for the whole time..
Anyhow again, thanks sweet star~ I do love all that you are and do ♥♥♥

    *Sky, ONE THING YOU MISSED*
I've heard of Ramadan, but I've never actually looked it up to find out what exactly a 30-day fast is by the standards of this religion.
And to me, fasting is, you can drink water but you can't have any food & 1 days 24 hours. Not from sunrise to sunset. So, that's new to me.
When Wim Hof recently posted just last week that he wants everyone to try to start doing a fast every Monday, that we can drink water or tea, whatever your preferences but to not have any food and let your body reset itself, I'm all for that I'm just like you at the as a practitioner of the Wim Hof method.
But I don't recall anywhere in the video where you specify that they can or cannot eat food or drink any water for a full 30 days. I think the specification of being able to eat a small meal Before Sunrise and eat a small meal in thanks & in mindfulness in the evening after sunset as far as I understand from the video, was something I didn't understand.
My idea of a 30-day Ramadan fast.... when I hear a 30-day fast, I'm thinking no eating and no drinking for 30 days straight, not... "intermittent fasting" 😅😅😅
Some clarification on that little detail in the introduction might help a lot more people who are not Islamic like me.

I loved it. You're too fucken good. My best friend is Muslim. He fast and do everything, tried explaining to me why they do it and how it helps, But i never really understood. Partly cause he is bad explainer and doesn't really understand it much himself.
But you're on a whole another level. Learned so much from you. Like when you said, it gives your digestion a break. Next couple of days, i'll have to try it.
Please keep going make more videos. I love you & you're amazing.

I am so happy you liked the video and found it helpful! I also have other videos about intermittent fasting that are even more in-depth about the science of fasting, although it's not specific to dry fasting. Hope that helps! Much love
