A fantastic final! I loved O'Neill's sheepish answers to the 1982 video games questions! No such thing as a wasted childhood. Really enjoyed the contest and series as a whole, and even picked up a few answers. Enormous thanks to Paxman, bowing out in style for his final Christmas specials (literally given his seasonal attire!) and also of course to you Tybalt for your regular uploads.
Very well played to Balliol, much the better team, and well deserved the win. But it is still a great achievement for Hull alumni to reach the final. Especially given the stereotypes around our city. I think reaching the final may have disproven some snobbish attitudes towards us. Hull also took all questions, and wrong answers especially, in good fun (as it should be in a Christmas special!) - not being too competitive, like some teams this year were. Congratulations all round for both teams from me :)

I thought it was fantastic. Fairly sure this was the last show Paxo filmed, some have noted his lack of tie in recent seasons, so if this a small nod to that from him or his production staff that's very well played. Hope he enjoyed a toast at the end and enjoys his retirement
Apparently Paxman's Parkinsons was informally diagnosed by a doctor who saw some of the symptoms while watching him on UC! I guess this was the last UC episode recorded with Paxman at the helm. 28 years is a lifetime! Take a bow, Paxman. You will be missed. This year coincidentally also witnessed the death of Bamber.

Thanks very much for posting the competition. It's greatly appreciated in the US. I'm always impressed with the range of knowledge displayed by UC teams over the course of a competition, even if they're sometimes a bit weak on the French republics.
Cheers Tybalt. Missed watching your uploads of the middle part of the contest thanks to seeing them on the proper TV, but now I'm outside the UK again they've been great. The Semis and final were great, especially compared to some of the agonising prelims. Baliol thoroughly deserved champs.
I still can’t understand for the life of me why Oxbridge are allowed to admit individual colleges. They’re not equivalent to individual universities. They don’t operate like the institutions which make up the university of London.
I think of the fact that if Oxford and Cambridge was only allowed to pick their top 4 students every year they would easily win because they would have a largest pool of student to choose from.
@@tybaltmacbeth that’s not true. Oxbridge have a combined student population of 50,000. The university of Manchester alone has a 40,000 students and it isn’t even the largest university. So they wouldn’t have more to choose from. Are you just suggesting that Oxbridge students are just cleverer than all other students therefore it would be a given that they’re teams would always be in the top?
@@peteradaniel oxbridge students may or may not be cleverer than others but they are definitely priveleged, with family and public school support, leisure to pursue interests etc without having to work as well as study. A generalization, I know as there will be 'scholarship' students to leaven the life advantages. Y

With the starter questions, if nobody answers a science or maths question or if both teams answer incorrectly. It would get edited out from the final production. This might have been the case here.

Did the Balliol team have some internal issues from the midway point? The captain didn't seem to want to look at the two members to his right, and also at about 23 minutes the woman says to the guy next to her "Did you get that?" to him when they got a question wrong!
