13:15 The Edward Hopper round was excruciating. Forty seconds to discuss, without irony, how embarrassing it's going to be, before delivering the answer "Wim Wenders", arrived at after only six seconds. Twenty-seven seconds to pass on "Road to Perdition". Nineteen seconds to deliver the answer "Psycho", arrived at after only five seconds. Two minutes and fifteen seconds in total, for a round which could have taken two shakes of a rat's willy. These people must never be allowed on television again.

I've only been watching UC for a few years. This is the 1st time I've seen Paxman disqualify a bonus b/c they took too long. They should really have a timer instead him saying, 'Come on, let's have it.'

If anything he's considerably more lenient on the alumni teams (presumably because they don't get as much practice with the format as the students do). Another factor is that the student teams usually take the hint the FIRST time he says "come on"!

In my humble opinion(!), UC (including the "regular" competition) would be IMMEASURABLY improved if they had a timed limit on deliberations. No answer before the buzzer goes off and you don't get the points.
If you watch old episodes of UC in the days of Bamber Gascoigne, it moved at an electric pace compared to today's shows. I don't know any quiz shows where timers aren't part of the equation!

@@helenswan705 - LOL!! I do think it has become ridiculously slow. As I said before, what "game show" doesn't have a timer on answering questions? There may be one but I can't think of it! Maybe when they replace Mr. P they will take more control of the process! Watching SOME discussion is OK but there should be a limit (also, not apparently arbitrarily set each time by the MC)!

the contestants don't seem to be aware that time is of the essence as well in this competition; the quicker the answer is given, the more time to raise the score... the teams took too long in answering questions, and they seem to have laboured under the impression that the bonus questions have to be answered only after the description is given... University Challenge could perhaps put a time clock for answers to be given: e.g., 10 seconds...
